The song is based on the novel "Steppenwolf" by German Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse. The novel is about a man called "Harry Haller" (apparently an alter ego of Hermann Hesse due to the double H in the name of the author and the protagonist) who thinks little of the other people around him and feels like a wolf among them. At the end of the novel he finds the magic theater ("magisches Theater" in German) with the sign "Eintritt nur für Verrückte" ("Entry for madmen only"). The novel was immensely popular during the hippie movement. This is just one of many brilliant songs by Hawkwind. Other suggestions for songs by them: "Assault and Battery/The Golden Void", "Damnation Alley" or "Robot". The band Steppenwolf named itself after this novel too. Their singer John Kay had a German mother and speaks perfect German himself.
Nice reaction to this 1976 classic. The violinist Simon House was with the band from 1974 to 1978, when he joined Bowie, and again 1989-90, the band live during these times is out of this world. Sad news, last week founder member Nik Turner died, RIP. He is the sax here, this was his last album but he also returned later on (1982-5). vocalist'Hassan I Sahba' and 'Uncle Sam's On Mars' are great tracks from this era, but if you want some blitzed out stoner rock then maybe Brainstorm or Master of the Universe from 71-2. The thing with Hawkwind is you get a lot different styles of music and changes through the decades, but its a rabbit hole worth checking out and the quality holds up well which is rare for a group. The Electric Tepee album is a personal favourite.
Hawkwind are a fantastic band but we have lost many of the musicians involved with them over the years. Nik Turner , one of the founding members died recently but was still releasing lps up until earlier this year. Xitintoday is his earliest solo. Do look some out and have a listen.

I can’t believe you actually think this is a steppenwolf song Robert Calvert was a visionary poet who also had a manic side that required several hospitalizations
Hey John, wow what a difference, I watch all of your Zappa videos (yeah I'm a huge Zappa fan) and we have occassionally commentedd/replied to each other and so to now see you listening to Steppenwolf playing Hawkwind is amazing, no wait...! I usually laugh loads watching your videos due to it being some seriously twisted lyrics or subject matters within Zappa's music but I laughed out loud when you said this is Hawkwind by Steppenwolf! It's probably obvious to you by now that the opposite applies and that Hawkwind is the band, and what a band, I may absolutely love Frank Zappa but Hawkwind are my life long favourite band, they ain't the best, they're just my favourite. This song really is beautiful isn't it, those twin violins by Simon House are just so f*****g luscious, now if you want to be wowed by a similar kind of performance by Simon's violin playing within this band then listen to their track titled "Wind of Change" from their 1974 studio album called "Hall of the Mountain Grill", it always makes me feel like it is from a Spaghetti Western film during the impending shoot out at the finale, it's such an epic track. Anyway, you asked a question and so here's my answer, the difference between a Man-Wolf and a Wolfman really is in the name used, a Werewolf is what we say in English but the word Were comes from "Wer/were" which means "Man" in Old English (and other Germanic languages) as in Wergild/Weregeld or Man-Gold ie the value of a Man's life which is basically his worth within Society and so the Wer evolved into were when added to wolf to make Werewolf, Manwolf is just some crappy bullshit name used in Hollywood Horror movie sensationalism of the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's.
@@Katehowe3010 especially when the wolf man and man wolf was sung throughout the song and in his own word doesn't sound like the other steppenwolf songs at somepoint should have looked up like he has done with other songs
You're up the wrong tree my friend. Hawkwind is the band Steppenwolf the song. They're an English band. The song is based on a classic novel by German author Hermann Hessler about about a schitzophrenic who thought he was half man, half wolf. It's a fantastic nofel. Robert Calvert turned it into a fantastic song. Hawkwind are still going and they invented Space Rock. Steppenwolf were a good American rock band in the 60s. Please don't middle them up. The Hawks were and still are superior. Alas, Mr Calvert is no longer with us by this epic song is a fabulous Legacy. I wish I'd written it.

I didn't know of Nik Turners passing, that is so sad.
The band is Hawkwind the song Steppenwolf, based on a book by Hermann Hesse of the same name.

and as you will know... contrast Xitintoday with his 'Passout' as Inner City Unit. So different. Love it all.

Hawkwind is the band NOT Steppenwolf.
