    I really appreciate the blow by blow breakdown that you employ in your videos. It helps train a thought process that comes in handy when you're in an engagement in War Thunder. After watching your videos (and other YT videos about WT dogfights) I've started to be able to find time to think at combat speeds. I'm still working on that skill, but these breakdowns help. Thanks Magz! Great channel!

    War Thunder: Zero vs Zero (Premium A6M2 vs Mod 11)
    The A6M2 Zero, In my opinion one of the best aircraft at its battle rating and often underestimated. But recently I have been seeing it used less and less, Japanese forces seem to favor the J2M or the Premium F4U and whats more surprising is US forces that have access too it as a Premium with bonuses seem to ignore it as well.
    Now as much as I am not a fan of cross nation premiums, Well let's be honest mixed battles are making RB less realistic every day so what the hell. Let's fly out the US A6M2 and show what it is truly capable of, By taking on another A6M2.
    Let me know in the comments if you like this style of video and I'll consider breaking down more individual engagements. I hope you enjoy.

      +MagzTV I think the Japanese A6M2 is pretty damn good. Until you push it pass 450km. Generally my tactic to deal with A6M2 Zero series on my tail is to push my plane pass 450km and make a very hard maneuver and watch the poor Bastard in the A6M2 rip his plane. Thing is it doesn't work against A6M5 Zeroes because of the A6M5's much more sturdy frame. A6M3 its about 500km or more you can do that to them as well. This tactic only works on people who don't know the Zero's G force tolerance and rip speed. Also I do have the F4U Corsair, I like the plane in general when I get to boom and zoom Allied teams, thing is I do not have the J2M as I already unlocked the A6M5 series when I got introduced but I believe the J2M is a boom and zoom plane/ energy fighter (I may be wrong). Anyway to this video I don't think the Zero series until the A6M5 series to start boom and zooming as they tend to rip at 530km/h (A6M2 series) 540-580km/h (A6M3 series) and 660-720km/h (A6M5 Series) from straight line dives. A6M5 series in my book is the more flexible A6M series than the other despite I love the A6M2 more than any other prop.

      +MagzTV At matches around br 5.0 it is full of J2M and premium FW-190. While I agree these are great planes, but people need to remember A6M are great as well. Yes, they are fragile and have slow speed at high tiers, these are compensated by their great turn rate. A6M are my favourite for quite some time until I have played the Spitfire Mk V

    • @laisy961
      @laisy961 8 лет назад

      +MasterofBlitz A6M5 is definitely much better than A6M2, but its br means it has to face some tough opponents...
      And talking about Zero's G tolerance, recently I decided to play A6M2 again after flying A6M3 and 5 for months. And then I decided to bnz someone...

    • @MasterofBlitz
      @MasterofBlitz 8 лет назад

      Lai SY
      You could do that in a A6M2 Zero, but I for one would never recommend it as I feel like the Zero would reach its rip speed quite quickly

    • @laisy961
      @laisy961 8 лет назад

      MasterofBlitz Oh I should add I tried to bnz like I usually do in A6M5, dive at high speed, and turn. Forgot that A6M2 can't handle Gs like A6M5 do.

    Thanks Magz. Another good 'un.
    I really enjoyed this format with the two showings. Please do it again. Often. It makes for an excellent tutorial.
    Tying a certain characteristic to a certain aircraft, which can be extended to others like it, and then exploiting that trait for the viewer (with stop motion - YES!) is both entertaining and instructional. That second run through worked well for me. You fought like an aikidoka, using an opponent's energy against him. I will remember that setup and battle and use it.
    Haven't got a Zero yet but there's one or two Chaikas laying around here somewhere....
    Well done, mate, on all counts.

    Excellent example of defensive bait flying magz. You make some good point in this video that I understand, and often do in the game, but didn't realize because it became a habit for me. What I mean by that is I have a tendency to bait pilots, but I'm doing it because I want to make it a fair fight, not because I'm testing the other pilots skill. Now that you mention it though I will start taking this into consideration.

    i know that being a Warthuder veteran "good fights" are few and far between but that doesn't mean that there are players that are about half way into the game and grinding aircraft should know when or when not to engage on a target even if its 1v1 or a 2v1. He has better odds at winning the overall game and also giving him an assist on top of that. i see nothing wrong with what the p 39 did. P.S. i am not a super experienced Warthunder player but i stand with the mediocre and mid level players who just want to help and get cool aircraft.

    "good engagements are few and far between"
    Ain't that the truth. I got into an honest to god flat scissors against a russian pilot in my 109 a few days ago, and the fact that the guy was doing something other than just constantly trying to point his nose at me was really cool. It wasn't a fantastic engagement- he didn't do anything too out of the ordinary, he just practiced some decent defensive BFM against me and was rewarded by getting away with his plane mostly intact when one of his buddies forced me to disengage.

  • @janflorovic5880
    @janflorovic5880 8 лет назад

    @Magz, after the overshoot when you were pulling up, personally I wouldn't of used the flaps. This is because I would of saved energy this enabling me to finish that zero here and there in that stall. Instead what happened you bled the energy with flaps and didn't kill him them which made you lose all your altitude to dive after him

    honestly I love the A6M2, it's one of my favorite low tier fighters and I do have the american premium one. I have no idea why it isn't flown as much as it is a fantastic and extremely maneuverable aircraft, has good guns, and to top it all of it is a decent climber as well.

  • @MasterJawata
    @MasterJawata 8 лет назад

    I've spaded every single Zeros in the tech tree, but I don't have any premium Zero, because I don't think there is a point of getting it, especially the american one. For the american, there is also a lot good fighters (Hellcat, Thunderbolt etc) at the same BR range that I just don't think I need to pay for a Zero.
    On the other hand, I am spamming F4U a lot atm because from my experience, 8 of 10 matches on the american side, we would lose simply because the teammates denies to climb, and always tries to dogfight at treetop level. So I play the Japanese F4U to enjoy the American machine while making sure I could get some decent teammates. (Somehow of all 5 nations, American is the one that least favorite climbing.)
    Anyway, love your channel, Magz. Your videos really let me learn a lot and improved my gameplays in RB.

    The reason people fly the Japanese F4U-1d Corsair is because the Japanese Corsair has a 500% lions booster, and it gets on maps like Saipan, where it can grind through all the F6F AI and make 100,000+ lions. That is the reason me, and many other level 100s go back down to tier 2 Japanese just to get houndreds of thousands of lions.

  • @z3r0_35
    @z3r0_35 8 лет назад

    There's a couple of issues that I think are why the Zero isn't as popular anymore, and of these, only one of those aircraft has anything to do with the plane itself (and even then it's only part of the problem in that particular case):
    1) It's not fast enough to catch runners. Look, we all know that at least every other game, there's going to be THAT guy on the Allied team who is the last one alive and climbs to space and runs away in a P-47 as soon as things start going sour for his team (and it was these assholes that are the primary reason I missed out on getting the A-26, because they would just waste everyone's time and made it impossible to hit that 80% activity criteria, and nine times out of ten, it was somebody in a P-47). The J2M and F4U at least stand somewhat of a chance of catching those runners, but the A6M2 doesn't have a prayer of doing so unless said P-47 decides to land and is able to run the gauntlet of the enemy AAA (which isn't easy in a relatively slow aircraft).
    2) The most significant reason for why I myself haven't flown ANY of the Zeroes a lot lately, the implementation of the G-Lock mechanic. Whether intentional or not, this was a HUGE indirect nerf to turn fighters and a significant buff to energy fighters, as turn fighters like the A6M are now far more limited in their ability to fly defensively because the pilots are constantly blacking themselves out from pulling so many Gs unless their pilot is fully-trained, but even that isn't enough sometimes. This mechanic is the primary reason why my K/D ratio in several Japanese planes has dropped, because of the G-Lock mechanic kicking in at the worst possible time and either making it impossible to pull out of a dive or, more frequently, paralyzing my aircraft right as it enters an enemy's line of fire. The Japanese aren't the only ones suffering from this (the lower-tiered British and to a lesser extent the Russians were affected by this as well) but it hit them harder than anyone else, by far.

    Magz, would you be able to do a video/review of the Ki-43 III? I fly this aircraft almost exclusively and I'd say that the thing is a borderline UFO. It can easily turn inside a Zero and outrun an FW190 at 8k meters, as well as virtually any russian aircraft, despite the fact that these planes were supposedly horrid at high altitude.

    I was reading the video description and I must ask this
    Why does everyone hate mixed battle? Everyone who plays this game seems to not give a crap about gameplay over historical accuracy, key word: seems. Every argument against it I heard is: "It's not realistic" Well, I think it adds a whole new dynamic to the game. Typically, a nation has one general strategy with their planes as they share common traits. In a mixed battle, you have to consider that you fighting multiple types of aircraft and thus you have to fight different strategies. To me, this is much more interesting than fighting a nation of 90% turn fighters or a nation of 90% energy fighters.

      It splits the teams into different roles as you say... Leading to more stupidity, less communication, and less overall teamwork... It's fun doing this with a BF109F-1 or BF109F-2, the two most agile BF109's in War Thunder vs higher battle rated aircraft on Custom Battle. Lure them into a turn fight and easy win after that. Yaks and Spitfires even have problems fighting BF109F-1 and F-2 fighters, only downside is the F-1 and F-2 suffer firepower issues... F-1 with a FF/M 20mm cannon with 60 rounds and the F-2 has a 15mm MG151 which relies on AP Incendiary rounds to take down planes. That being said, it isn't a problem if you aim your shots. 15mm AP incendiary is wonderful for starting fires for example, even killed a B29 with a single pass. lol

    I think the Zero is great only vs people with no idea how to play correctly with the opponents you always find at that level. If you find yourself against a BnZer who actually knows what he's doing (ie. not turnfight against you), the Zero pilot has no chance - he can only win if the enemy makes a mistake, or if someone else comes to the rescue.
    Would like to see a Zero vs Spitfire though, with two good pilots behind the controls.
    Edit: also, don't forget you have thousands of flight in your crew and it's probably maxed out. A lot of players would have G-locked sooner (or would have less maneuvreability on the controls) compared to you. That of course doesn't take anything off your skill level.

    Personally I absolutely LOVE the a6m2 mod 11- as well as the ki 61's especially (to my suprise) the hei. I just only started playing the a6m2 naval plane a coupple of days ago and got a trophy talisman on it after the first match. After spading it..It feels like nerfing myself. Take off from carrier.. And feels slightly less manouverable or heavier perhaps. Sort of like the a6m3. My biggest problem with it though is the 3 second or so "start up time" on takeoff. But I want those skins so thats a good carrot for me to keep playing the a6m2.
    The only reason I am not playing the a6m2 and the ki 61 i Otsu even more is the daily challenges. I feel they sort of ruin some of the fun.

    In the p-39's defence, I think I saw him chasing before you made your initial defensive turn, it was possible he had already committed to the attack you commented on a bit before it was obvious you had turned the tables. True that if he had read the situation better he would know you had a handle on it, but just a thought, particularly with the obscuring cloud at that point, he may have already committed and not had a clear picture of the relative state of your individual engagement. Don't be to hard on him, he tried. :P

      +Stan Mckhanic Oh I wasn't being hard on the pilot so much which is why I didn't call him out by name, and to be fair he seem to realize the situation after his pass and disengaged. It was more of an in general to the WT community thing, When most of the enemy team is still up there are plenty of kills to go around there is no need to waste energy on an aircraft that is already under control. I hesitated to even put it in.

    MagZ, how do you know how far to push the zero? Through experience? I would've never dared to pull those turns towards the end at those speeds if I had been in your shoes at that time, so I was curious as to how you determine how much to push the zero.

    The problem with the a6m2 is with any kind of uptier, even just to 3.7, planes like the p47d, p63a5, and hellcat can club it if they know what they are doing, the j2m on the other hand remains competitive.

    Alright, I gotta ask, what is your crew's G-tolerance and stamina? Cause I would've had about a quarter of maneuver time as you through that fight, and it is possible I would've blacked out just pulling the aircraft out of the dive.

  • @Joltout
    @Joltout 8 лет назад +1

    Magz, what about the M3 and M5s BRs? Having spaded the M3s recently and trying to spade the M5s, I'd say that the Zeros past the M2 variants are over tired like crazy and suffer as a result (A6M5s fight Griffons and Bearcats.... Seriously, 5.0/5.3 for an M5?).
    I ask you to consider the later Zeros and maybe give them a go whilst comparing/analyzing their BR, because I sure as hell am convinced that, unless you face absolute donkeys in them, they're just useless.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  8 лет назад

      +RedDerRot Ive had the later zeros on channel as well, I have no issue with the M3's or the M5's at all. The A6M5 premium is still my favorite grinder for Japan. They do require a higher skill cap to use but flown correctly you can make pretty much any allied aircraft in the game spew cannon rounds into empty air trying to hit you while taking your time to line up a nice kill shot.

    • @Joltout
      @Joltout 8 лет назад

      +MagzTV
      Yet the A7Ms, planes designed to take the Zeros role, sit at BR 4.0 and are considerably better.
      "Higher skill cap" in this sense to me basically means "Gaijin screwed us, so we have to git gud and deal with it". Basically, plane scenarios like the FR47 and Meteor Mk.3. It's dumb, especially since the same planes the M2s face can still easily kill the M3s/M5s the same way they kill M2s. There's only about a 50-60kph max speed difference between the M2s and M5s after all, and they all handle about the same.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  8 лет назад +1

      +RedDerRot And that's the problem, Your thinking in terms of speed. Zeros don't fight with speed, In fact if they are at max speed they are often less maneuverable than the planes they are fighting. You don't chase people down in a zero, You sit somewhere in plain sight and wait for the enemy to come to you, After all they cant shoot you down from the other side of the map so they will come.
      In general a fight in my A6M5 vs say a Bearcat or a Gryphon spit involves me cruising around at 10kish waiting for them to arrive, Then dodging the first boom, Then the second and then the 3rd, Doing very much what you see in this video, letting the enemy slowly bleed of all its speed and get frustrated at there own ineffectiveness. Once they are slow enough I turn in on them lining up for a shot on one of there zooms away from me, If I aim well I usually land a critical strike on them if not kill the pilot. If there still alive and they begin to engage me in close quarters I kill them, If they run it's usually to there own runway so I follow and kill them as there slowing down to land.
      I can usually maintain this kind of fight with up to three aircraft at once however beyond that there are often just too many shells in the air to avoid. And if you are in a 4vs1 fight then it's highly likely you are the last man standing on your team in the first place.
      In the end the zero is not about rushing to a target at high BR's its about patience, You are less of an active hunter and more of a trapper.

    • @Joltout
      @Joltout 8 лет назад

      True. It's just frustrating to fly for me I guess. Usually when I try to dodge a boom/zoom, it usually ends up in me dying. Not sure what I'm doing wrong there but I guess it's something to practice.

    • @swayingGrass
      @swayingGrass 8 лет назад +1

      +MagzTV Well I agree. But if the enemy also has patience and just BnZ all day long without losing initial energy, you can't do anything. After the dodging the attack you basically bleed too much speed to be able to catch the target when it's zooming away (as if Zero can has lot of speed anyway). Also there's G-lock now. But if the enemy is stupid, it's a real fun plane to fly. Once shot down a VK107, felt sooooo gooooood..... But I think the Ki-43 III is actually better or just very slightly worse than A6M5.

  • @timur22993

    Magz, a little question, unrelated to this video, but I look for an opinion of a skilled pilot. Headon engagements. I do try to avoid them at all cost, but there are situations when you just don't have enough time to turn copletely away from it before the shots are fired. How do you deal with such situations? I tend to go in with guns blazing untill something like 900meters to enemy, then try to duck out of their line of fire. It works to some degree but I oftenly find myself being killed with just a single lucky hit. How would you advise to deal with such situation?

    • @johnandrews8293
      @johnandrews8293 8 лет назад

      +Timur Pirkhal I may not be Magz, but I hope to offer some advice if I may. Aim a little above the target, depending on which guns you are using, and open fire at 1.5km. At 1.2km, roll off hard and either dive or bank away. If an enemy fires at 1.5km and you keep firing until .9km, he is likely already turned away and no longer threatened by your fire, while you have a bunch of lead he fired a second ago coming straight for your pilot. It's all about timing.

      +Vin-G Not quite, Popping landing flaps would have allowed a tighter turn but would have cost me the speed I was using to stay ahead of the Mod 11's guns making it much easier for it to get a kill shot on me. The only reason to do that would have been to force a head on with the mod 11 which would have been a foolish and needless risk in this fight.
