- Today we are shooting with a great bunch of countryfolk. Made up of farmers, shoot owners and time served shooting men and women. The pheasant shoot is owned and run by my good friend Dennis Smith who farms in a beautiful part of North Yorkshire. The theme of the day is enjoying a great day out in the countryside with like-minded people. Something that goes off throughout the shooting season in this glorious countryside of ours.

I love seeing all the birds. I see more birds in one of your videos than we do in a whole season here in Ohio. Wonderful managemwmt going on over there evidently. Wish we could get that kind of management going here.
Dave, as always a fantastic film. I enjoy all your films from the high bird shoots to the farm shoots like this one. Its great how you give us a taste of the whole day, from breakfast (no pun intended) to each drive and how you involve everyone. It goes to show what shooting people are like and how everyone enjoys a days shooting. So, thanks again Dave and looking forward to your next film.

4:02.......excellent timing and shot! Wish I could shoot as well.
5:23.....that stock is beautiful! Wish I could find wood so figured. Makes the gun a piece of art as well as a fine shooting piece.
6:16.....poetry in motion. Might we all be able to follow this man in his shooting ability. But then again,.......Ability, equipment, and training. It takes YEARS of practice to be able to pull-off some of these shots. I have 8 different shotguns in three different actions and 3 different gauges, and 5 decades of hunting.
I am nowhere close to this man's ability to sight and shoot game. On a good day, I might come close, but he has much more experience than I do. I raise my glass to you, sir.
6:46......We get some of the birds with that plumage; aquamarine on the rump but I have mostly seen them out west in the US. I am located in the midwest and we see mostly totally bronze colored birds.
7:06......A stop to rest and recompose ourselves. Coffee and maybe a tot of Tawny Port. I like.
Wish I had one of those sticks that folded down to give me a seat.
8:04.........Beautiful shooting, Dave. A clean easy double for you! I wish I was as good.
11:58......I mentioned this in one of my other posts........the gentleman does not turn the action away from him, thus having the spent hulls hit him and land on his jacket. Must not have been shooting as long as you or does not care about spent casings hitting him. Does seem to be a good shot.

Hi Darell - yes i will be attending the shooting show and will be flitting between the gamebore stand and the Browning stand- the debate was clipped because someone decided with the backlash they didnt want to be in it.

Great film again keep up the good work , could you tell me more about the stock on youre gun please why the monticarlo stock and did browning/ miroku do that for you intresting all the best
this is a stock i found my self - for some reason montecarlo stocks are not so popular now even in clay shooting, but i do favour them because they seem to mount instantly to the same area of face and find line which is most important when game shooting

no - jonathan Mcgee is no where near as good as my new guy, is name is Jonnie tho!! he is not mentioned because he works for me full time as part of my production, i have not done anything with Mcgee for a couple or three years now, but i do see how my films on his site are the main viewing contributor and out of his top 12 films 8 are mine😂
Really enjoyed this one.Been watching KJ in previous films and he is ''poachery''😂 in motion with that Perazzi on good pheasants.Good to see his better half picking her birds, being selective and pulling off some shots many would be well happy with and beyond many I do see.My own preference is for plastic wads but fall into line when I have to.It is an extremely emotive issue but with a few years on me now the over bored barrels trend in conjunction with fibre wads has undoubted drawbacks for some game shooting which is noticeable and plain to see.Even with nominal bored guns the fibre wad cartridge does not have the stopping power of an equivalent plastic cup counterpart.Shot count climbs by a substantial margin which is not desirable.I know folks who to their credit will not take on high birds with fibre.Each unto their own I guess but have witnessed both sides of this ever spinning coin.
you are right of course with all of the above points, i think the cartridges are about there now! its the gun trade that needs to catch up

What length barrels do you normally shoot with Dave.

When plas wads are banned it will render many guns pretty useless on really good bird. The gun manufactures will be raking it in if they produce more guns with a decent bore size ie 18.4,18.5 etc. Unless a fibre wad is invested to be just as good as a plas wad in over bored guns. I can't see that happening. What bore would you say you can get away with before you start losing a lot of pressure? I've got an 18.7 bore and I think I may just be getting away without losing to much pressure. Also I'm thinking if having to use a fibre in an over bored gun, possibly go up a shot size as atleast you'll have a bit more energy down range and that may compensate some of the energy lost.
There are biodegradable and photodegradable pastic wads available now. Never had any issues shooting fibre wads out of my MK38 (.740" bores).
A proper days shooting my Carrie with proper people, it doesn't get any better !!!

Excellent film, although musically you could do with some more variety, the same two tunes on all of your videos are beginning to drive me insane, please, get your editor to sort it out!
Why have you edited it. It was a brilliant debate, it is the elephant in the room for shooting. I am a fibre only shooter but having patterned my 20 bores with different cartridges and chokes combinations it is plastic wad cups that makes a real difference to constant dense patterns
the debate was about trying to save the obturator as a compromise whilst the gun manufacturers caught up (because of overboring issues) and fibre wad cartridge makers (because of the problem caused by overboring insufficient seal) but i see the writing on the wall for plaswads, there is some fantastic fibres - but you have to ensure gun fits fibre
Around the 14min mark i noticed that the top lever on mandi's gun tripped upon her first shot- Im not sure if this is a problem but I would hate for any accidents to hurt someone

Exactly but i could do nothing on this one because i had the "i didnt give my permission to film me " card thrown at me (even though everyone agreed to debate whilst being filmed), but this does happen occasionally when you do some controversial debate and when they see any backlash they don't want to be involved, unfortunately this is the shooting world still hiding behind the wall, thanks for your input - always welcomed

there are dog men and women who glean the surrounding area with their trained dogs and pick any wounded or runners and dispatch them immediately and humanely.👌

Sorry about that - seems someone decided after the backlash they did not agree to be filmed so could not just cut them out without spoiling the rest of the debate

Get youself a gun bored .720 x18.3 and use a good quality fibre cartridge i doubt if you will notice the Difference once you get past the modern notion that your mate in the pub said.
PLASTIC IS THE ONLY THING THAT KILLS EM. Not an entirely accurate statment that one . Im sure the Great shots of yesteryear with bags in excess of over a 1000 birds a day would

i can see you know what you are talking about as .720 is the old english bore found in a lot of sxs and ideal for fibre
i have several guns with 18.3 18.4 in the bore and plenty of 18.7 with the odd 18.8, i have been pattern testing and impact testing for many years , i have shot just about any cartridge combination (from 16 grms to 64 grms) and gun combination you could think of, i think by now i know what combination is the best killer, my main cause for debate is ensuring that the gun manufacturers technology is keeping up with the fibre trend, i can see some issues arising with guns that are too over bored !! i have seen new guns with 18.4 stamped on the barells (i have one in my possession now) and when i have checked them out they have been nearly a 10 bore right up to the choke end, totally useless for fibre wad as i found out to my cost on a driven day a couple of years ago, this gun was bought brand new at a request off me to be specifically 18.4, no fault of the dealer that this turned out to be a complete falsehood, take no notice what is stamped on them check the bore your self before buying, easy to do - just get a plaswad or obturator on a rod and push it gently down the barrel until it sucks up with a bit of light resistance mark the rods depth with felt tip, measure from end of wad to mark and if 18.4 it should be 23/4 inches 3 inch is 18.7 which is actually your bore for 3" magnum loads, there is nothing wrong with 18.7 it is just in for fibre but you can also use the 3" magnums - you do not have that choice with 18.3 or 18.4

@@TweedsandPheasants i have patterned thousands through my 18.7 Mk38 and see no difference in pattern or hitting power, but 18.7 is your 3 inch mag bore and i think this will become more popular as the high pheasant brigade will move to a 3" fibre cartridge to carry 42 to 44grm 3s and 4s, the 18.7 will be absolutely perfect for this, but as i have said before some guns are bored out beyond 18.7 and so people need to take no notice what it says on the wrapper and check the goods out for themselves before buying.
