We saw MHE two weeks ago. All 4 of us were blown away by Darren Criss, Helen J. Shen, and the production. The set and lighting designs are stunning. The story is so nuanced, 14 days later, we are still discussing aspects of the show. I'm so glad to have experienced this Easter egg stuffed musical and excited to see it again.
Tim -- Based on your review, I saw this show tonight. It's wonderful -- thanks for recommending it so highly. The sets, scenic design, and visual effects are all fantastic, but always in service to the story, not just to call attention to themselves. Performances and songs are charming, as was the 50s vibe. Lots for me to think about as I connect the lessons the robots learn with my life. -- Steve
I attended the second preview and was blown away at how great it was already. Now I am trying to see if I can go back and see the finished product. Maybe the best original Broadway musical post-reopening for me.
I saw this show without knowing much about it aside from Darren Criss starring in it and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I saw it again and loved it even more. I hope people give it a chance and see this beautiful and heartwarming show.
I saw this show on its first preview and I was pleasantly shocked how much I loved this show. It easily could be my fave show of the season so far (Death Becomes Her is a close second) Also it's one of the newer shows where I can remember the songs right after. "The Way That It Has To Be" is constantly in my head
I saw this show on last Sunday and loved it ! I also went in pretty much blank as all I knew about it was two robots fall in love. After watching it I am blown away. The set is so amazing ! Also what a well developed story! Three days after seeing this show it still stays in my head making me wonder about things in life
Great review! You're not the only one who has said it goes on too long after the firefly scene, but I disagree. Each subsequent scene has a purpose and is either entertaining or relevnat to the plot. I'm glad you acknowledge the quality of the music--some people say the music is "not memorable," but I think it's actually just that it's a little too complex to stick in your head immediately. But after a second or third viewing, it definitely will! This is my favorite original musical to come along in years.
I agree that the subsequent scenes after the fireflies have purpose. They are necessary, but I think it needs to be paced a little faster as it is all really the falling action of the musical at that point. As for the music, I prefer complex compositions. I get bored with stock pop scores. So I was thrilled to have such nuance to a score like this. And YES! I'm going on record that this is the best new musical I've seen, maybe since Come From Away and that's saying a lot, because that's my favorite musical since I've started reviewing theater.
Sounds different, modern, and like something I would like. Thanks, always glad to have a new theater viewing goal.
