LoFi Ambient Goodness - Collision Devices Nocturnal | Secret Weapons Demo & Review

- Much like it's Shoegazey counterpart, the Black Hole Symmetry, the Nocturnal from Collision Devices is a multi effect that knows what goes into great ambient tone. Nocturnal fetures a crispy, low fidelity tape delay, a gentle shimmer reverb with a pair of EQ controls, and a dynamic tremolo that adds just enough shiver to keep things moving. But all three of these effects can be used to massive, washy, heavy ends as well. So let's explore the quiet and the loud that the Nocturnal can offer.

Cool and accurate. Pinned
rewatching this one again because the Crushturnal has me wanting one of these again too. That shimmery reverb and tape-like delay are just so gorgeous together.
The delay on this is gooey and wonderful. And I haven’t even gotten to the other effects yet. Just had to comment on how nice it sounds.
That intro songs is one of the best post rock songs I've heard recently, very rad. I specially like the lead tone at the very end and the way it idk, "breathes?" with your vibrato.
Cool to see you use a Bass Mark!! And a J bass at that!! I think I need this for my bass! Love the intro jam as always!! I would buy these songs!!!
So much fun!! 👏👏👏
Would you do a demo on the UA Dream 65? I know there are a lot out there, but I don't think in an ambient context. Plus I find your demos more helpful than the others out there.
Cool track & pedal
Great video as usual Mark. Don't know if you have time to answer a side question: I'm forced to play on headphones often and use amp sim pedals. I see you also often use them, before going in to the UA audio interface. I've seen you use the Walrus and Strymon Iridium, and perhaps you've also used the new UAFX dream/ruby? I wonder: which one would you recommend for the best tone to base ambient effect pedals on? thanks in advance
I think I’ve been convinced to buy this over the Hall of Fame and a delay.
Killer tracks once again, no surprises there. I don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask, but any chance we will see a secret weapons vid on the Meris LVX?
I don't know if it would be up your alley, but I've been wanting to do a demo vid on the Enzo for a while - primarily spending some time with it in dry mode and taking advantage of the non-synth features ( delay, pitch shift, ring mod, comp, filter). I know you'd do a much better job than myself :)
Hi, so I have the nocturnal on my pedalboard. I use a Walrus audio Phoenix PSU. When engaging that supply. Everything lights up except de nocturnal. I have to manually get the jack in and out from the pedal to get it to work… any idea on how that would come. All other 8 pedals no problem. They immediately are ready to go…
Currently using a Raster, Tremvelope, and Ventris...Do I have a need to swap them for This One pedal? Or maybe sandwich this between them?
sandwich is a good option - even when it comes to cooking
Mark, is that Mod Speed knob on the delay operating backwards? It seems like turning it clockwise decreases the speed.
Exactly ! :)
Love your intro tracks Mark! Thanks for the inspiration and the breakdown of the pedal.
Would you recommend running the Nocturnal in front or behind the BHS?
As somebody who uses the headphone jack of their ACS1 OFTEN, is the Dream good enough to have to spend the money on an interface? Really torn.
you can use Dream with headphones. need a mono/stereo Y splitter cable and a female/female jack adaptor. they said on The Gear Page that the amp pedals have plenty enough output to drive phones.
As soon as i heard the intro song!
Something sounds eerily familiar…
And then i thought…
Cove: “I miss the part when we were moving forward now…
…. WE SPEAK IN DIFFERENT VOICES! WE’RE FIGHTING WITH THE ONES WE LOVE!!!
I mean… I’ll happily take ANY saosin comparison.
I wish this thing were stereo...
Hey George,
The pedal can not be stereo as the tremolo is last in the chain and is analog. So it requires to duplicate the full analog circuit and it will be out price. Same thing with the Black Hole Symmetry. Tell me if you have any questions about our pedals ! :)
So you have to buy two bhs... 😁
A guitar pedal demo that doesn't have a full band track, which shows how the pedal sounds in a musical full band context, is just not good enough. Give us some quiet, calm, clean parts, and give us the noisy distorted guitar parts!
I see literally zero reason for this pedal to exist. Another delay/reverb with a barely changeable tremolo. It’s tiring to see the same thing over and over.
Hey ! I wish you could have the chance to test it ! As the pedal is based on textures/ambiences creation it's quite cool to use the shimmer with the tremolo like a sidechained shimmer + all of the momentary functions with the footswitch! :)
@@collisiondevices yeah- it’s hard to understand why one would buy a three in one big box pedal when you could get three separate effects and use them together- until you realize the benefit of the interactivity of the effects when they exist within the same ecosystem.
That being said- it still feels like a pretty big commitment for a relatively niche sound/capability- I still prefer separate pedals for the distinct feature set of each one individually. But I’m sure if I heard the exact sound I was looking for in one of these big box multi pedals I would love to own one.
@@collisiondevices No disrespect, but I think there are more creative ideas as opposed to redundant ones.
Ex. 1 Boss Super Shifter (whammy setting/“T-arm”) with delay.
Ex. 2 Moog MF-102 clone with presets or onboard expression.
@@rcanderson4328 Got it ! Looks great too! I think as we see each one of our pedals with a "concept" or a story during the creation - that's why we build pedals with several effects. And we prefer offer 1 pedal with 3 effects that we worked to perfectly fit and interact together than having 3 different effects. That being said having 3 different pedals is cool too and more flexible in terms of placement in the board, but not the same cost if you want the same quality, really depends on what you're looking for. I think there's enough space for each pedal
This is old but what are you using a preamp with an amp sim? Can you explain to me why you do? Thanks?
Honestly the easiest way to explain that would be to just have you watch my newest video. If you watch “step 2” I talk through why I use the benson preamp with a direct amp modeling rig.
