Zangoose Solo Challenge (VS Continued) - Pokémon FireRed

  • Challenge Rules:
    - I can only use my starter in battle.
    - No items in trainer battles except held items.
    - No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
    - Accuracy moves aren’t explicitly banned but will be avoided.
    - I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
    My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
    I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
    PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

      That early access to SD Erratic growth rate are a winning combination when pursuing a R2 finish. SD offsets the slow start, then the late game almost just feels like it melts away. What a fun run to play :)

    Its no wonder in Gen 6 they moved Sword Dance to be learned at Lv43 rather Lv9 for zangoose. Early Game SD is powerful.

    • @shadowtitanx3962

      Well, it got nerfed in Black and White 2, where it needs to wait much longer for Swords Dance.

      Absolute craziness wasn't it? Armaldo placed so high because of SD as an egg move, but Zangoose learning it naturally at 10? Insanity. So fun to play :) Thanks!

      @TheCrazyhusky 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@Eggsceptional No prob mate, If it was Gen 5, You'd have access to Zangoose's Hidden ability Toxic Boost. Which is basically the ability Guts only for poison.
      So thats +50% attack stat and swords dance at Level 9. Get yourself a toxic orb or poison yourself off of a low level wild pokemon then start sweeping the game.
      There is also poison type gym in Black2/White2.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +3

      @@TheCrazyhusky Very cool I didn't know that. I had to quickly look up Toxic Orb, it's introduced in Gen 4 so it's something new that I need to learn! I saw Toxic Boost and I assumed it acted like Guts. Being badly poisoned early, facing a team of 6 though with setup might get tricky. I'm pumped to get into a newer Generation for the expanded diversity of options. Gen 5+ will have to remain on the backburner for a while though.

    7:05 I always try to imagine how each Pokémon uses each move and with Zangoose I imagine that the way it uses Swords Dance is it either plants its claws and does a couple of spins to sharpen them or it runs around the opponent and uses the momentum to boost the power of its moves and it keeps doing that movement after being told to use Swords Dance once and being told to use it again makes Zangoose move faster to generate more power. I prefer to think it does the first thing of spinning to sharpen its claws since as I'm writing this I'm realizing that the second example sounds more like how a Pokémon would use Dragon Dance. I've been working on writing and drawing my Pokémon comic in my spare time and while I suck at writing a decent story I do have fun planning out Pokémon battles and trying make them the perfect balance between the games and anime so imagining how Pokémon use moves in multiple ways seems like the perfect way to do it. For example I can see Charmander uses Ember either by shooting small flames from its mouth or by swinging it tail so it can quickly use the flame on it to spread small fire balls in a defensive way

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +2

      That's super cool! I really like that. Choreographing entire Pokémon battles but with mechanics that exist outside of the game sounds so fun. It immediately made me think of Pikachu roasting Onix with an Electric move because the sprinklers turned on in the anime. Zangoose was 100% one that I was thinking about throughout the run. Flashing it's claws, getting low into a pouncing position. Cat Ferret (/mongoose?) type stuff! Amazing comment thank you for sharing :)

    I'm finally catched up to current release. Been watching this during the slow and low time at work. You could say it give me a Calm Mind.
    I just love the whole "genre" of narrated supercuts, not just pokemon challenges but all kind of things like achievement grinds and other playthrough with some kind of restriction. They're also great for when you work to Bulk Up on your muscles.
    For livestream VODs. RUclips do keep them indefinitely as long as no Cursed thing happen with copyright. And if you plan to stream on twitch, I would love to have a mean to watch them later since I live in a whole different side of the world and can't catch it live.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you! I'm glad you've been enjoying them. I really enjoy the highly edited gameplay genre as well. That's why so many of my videos are less about "the hardest challenges possible" and much more about having fun and sharing my experience. I'd much rather be known for spreading love than being a Pokémon mechanic loremaster. I'd never considered using my content during workouts but I've had a ton of comments about that! I put a lot of energy into my voice overs :)
      Absolutely! That's why I'm happy to release the VODs because not everyone can catch it live, and not everyone has the time to watch a 3-1/2 stream in one go. RUclips is great for that.

    Cat Ferret sounds like some weird translation goof. It reminds me of how in Suikoden there's a sentient vampire-slaying blade that's SUPPOSED to be called the Zodiac Sword, but they accidentally translated the two kanji that make up the word "zodiac" separately so it became the Star Dragon Sword instead (which is a cooler name anyway imo). I tried Googling the Japanese word for mongoose but it seems like they just use "mongoose" too, so in the end I'm still confused on what a Cat Ferret is 🤨

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +1

      I hadn't considered that actually. I was just scrolling through information about Zangoose and yeah. Why "Cat Ferret" instead of "Mongoose"? It's ALL over about the rivalry with Seviper. I love these games, they're amazing. Sometimes I wonder about the choices they made though :P That's super cool about the translation I never knew that. I'm not familiar with kanji at all. But past Brock, the rest of the game is kinda trival with SD and the moveset of return, brick break and aerial ace for coverage

    Wow was not expecting Zangoose to preform so well but it was awesome to see one of my favorite normal types do so well in the Kanto region! Great vid as always! Also surprised to see you play through SoulSilver instead of HeartGold, not because HG seems to be more popular but because it seems like it would be faster since you have to fight Ho-oh or Lugia to get to the league and getting to Ho-oh seems like it would be faster since it's in the same town as the Kimono Girls and you wouldn't need to use whirlpool (and flash) to get through the Whirl Islands compared to Bell Tower which yeah is 9 floors but feels like it would faster to get through. I guess in the long run it doesn't matter since it would be how fast you would get through SoulSilver not how fast you would get through Gen 4 Johto and Kanto.

Also I wanna say you more or less find the same items in both areas like Rare Candies and PP items but again it's easier to get them in Bell Tower since you would have to go through every entrance of the Whirl Islands to get all of them....granted you use Meowths as pick up cheerleaders and Meowth is SoulSilver only but you can get Aipom earlier with headbutt in both versions@@Eggsceptional

    1st, I like my eggs many different ways, hard boiled for hangover mornings, scrambled at lunch and fried at dinner is most common though. poached or eggs Benedict for brunch if I indulge.
    2nd. oh my wow I knew it would do well, but I never guessed it would dominate quite as hard as that, goes to show what an early boosting move like SD can do for a run. those resets against Machoke and then Bruno in the 1st run were rough though, but that is the thing with normal types they need fighting moves for the big rocks and steels but can't stand up to fighting either. Zangoose showed this off beautifully, very glass cannon, an Impish nature might of been handy for the added defense, but with a finish time that dethroned the legendaries, who needs it really.
    I didn't know you were doing Zangoose as a continuation of the snakes VS and would get an egg move, double kick was very handy in the early game, makes me wonder though, how quick quick could you get through Brock without it, my guess would be level 10, get SD and then boost until normal move did something instead of nothing. I see that Parasect is going ahead for next week, I wish you good luck, you will need it, I still maintain that doing it as part of a VS would be less painful as you would get psybeam for an egg move for dealing with Brock, but I respect your choice of the hard way, at least for the early game. do please let me know if you need any advice or suggestions for it, I have run it before and know what is needed.
    good news on the buttafreez, I have finished my usual errands (nugget bridge glitch, catching for early item finder and a meowth army, etc) and have gotten through misty at level 25 and am now using HP ice, handy against the many flying types and eventual grass types. I am having a hard time deciding on what to do about the moveset, HP ice and sleep powder are musts, but what other 2 moves balance that out, I'll figure it out.
    speaking of nugget bridge, I never few it as a cheat, it is a legit glitch, like badge boosts in Gen 1, you may find it useful for team runs in fire red as a full team will need a lot, lots of vitamins and TM's and as I said, a good place to train for attack EV's, just knock out the ekans and then let zubat knock you out afterwards, very effective

      That was kind of the rough idea for Dec. It's an absurd amount of work though and I really need to figure out my gameplan through the next 2 months. Paras is likely going to be my last super challenging video before it. That's assuming Paras doesn't break me first.
      Those are fair points with Gyarados, plus I'm wondering if it would even be worth it to pursue over something as simple as Return. With the exception of hitting Ghosts and coverage I can't see it being of much more benefit than a max friendship Return. I love how many possibilities exist. Having the increased option pool in Gen 4 is already making my head spin while eggsciting me.
      Despite how much you love your Poison types I get the feeling that you're a bit of a Fire bug too. Flareon, all the recommendations for HP Fire. But yes, a vote feels the fairest and most fun way. I was in a stream of Scott's after mine and saw him posting live polls in the chat. That's a thing! I really need to explore more content, if nothing else to expand my aggregate of ideas for my own channel. Including Mystic!
      There are some nicknames that just fit right? Jynx as Mr. Popo is hilarious. They could easily be siblings. Concerning your laptop - yes I get it. I'm experimenting with keybinds and things like that on my keyboard to help streamline my process with more shortcuts and having a better laid out keyboard/more ergonomic options is going to be huge for me. I don't want to develop carpal tunnel or things that so many gamers experience. I'm with you on mouse and keyboard over touchscreen. I guess we're just old :P
      All egg preparations are wonderful. I like the hard boiled hangover eggs. I haven't really drank in years but my go to used to be a scramble but with a LOT of like.. high density potatoes and things like that.
      As you know I struggle with Natures on a good day. I had considered going with something to increase Def instead of Atk since we did have all of that SD, but yeah I don't feel it was needed. Even 90% of that kitchen sink of a learnset wasn't used. I used like what? 9 unique moves throughout both entire runs?
      As far as Paras(ect) goes yes. I was staring longingly at Psybeam but I just didn't have a VS in me. Now, after running the damn thing I'm wondering if the VS would have been worth it. I'm still thinking not because that R2 league was... ugh. I built by FAR the jankiest move set I have ever used. I still haven't routed the second run yet because honestly I'm stumped. That Champ team is an absolute menace to deal with. You don't outspeed Charizard. EVER. Even with 210 Speed EVs at the end of the run we were nowhere close.
      I've found that Ice and Psychic cover each other relatively well for FR. Then since it's mostly special maybe Giga to round things out for some recovery too? Gen 3 gets so few options sometimes it hurts. Come on.. Butterfree can't summon the power of lightning from the clouds?? I think that the Nugget bridge exploit might be something that I showcase at some point but it does feel like an exploit. At least Gen 1s badge boost you can't prevent, whereas the Nugget bridge you actively farm. I did love finding that out though. It's a super nifty trick.

      @@Eggsceptional I'm inclined to say do all 4 runs of each Pokemon (2 for the solo and 2 for the VS) back to back, the more you play them, the easier they get, in theory this should streamline recording all 36 runs, 2 months is not long to do that though and Parasect will set you back a bit, it definitely knocked a few years off of me when I tried it.
      ah yes return, I always overlook return, for a powerful normal move, I often go double edge, but that option is rarer in Gen 4, but Gen 4 gave us something new to play with, Giga Impact, as hyper beam is now special, giga impact is the new physical version, good in a pinch, the recharge is a concern, but as you've experienced many times now Gyarados is quite tanky, it can take a hit if needed for the recharge turn.
      I am a little bias yes. Flareon is a favorite, he is the underdog of the Eevee's but I see much potential in it. everyone looks at the stats and movepool and things nah, the others are better or there are better fire types. I see the perfect user of curse and recipient of baton pass eevee teams. the HP fire is different, I like it because it works well with what most bugs get; sunny day and solarbeam and covers the big wall that is the steel type. I need to explore HP water more before I can say it is the best for me to be using though of course.
      old is an understatement, I am old school in many ways, my phones for example still has buttons and no touch screen. despite that, I do believe in having the equipment right for the job at hand, I think it is safe to say you have what you need now and it seems to be working for you. and as for the eggs, can't beat scrambled on top of some heavily buttered toast, so simple and so delicious especially when you are unwell.
      it is not often natures are pivotal in a solo unless what you are running is particularly bad, Parasect for example. most Pokemon are kind of defined before a run by the stats, Zangoose didn't need speed or attack it had both and could boost, so defense should been the thing to focus on as you saw with the fighting types and bruno. look at Steelix for example, when you catch it as an onix you know its defense is massive and when it evolved its attack will be very good, but the rest of the stats are going to be awful so a nature to balance that like careful for Special Defense or Jolly for Speed is the better options to look at.
      ah yes the champions Charizard, I run the numbers long ago, it will never out speed and pretty much always 1 shot with fire moves, your only hope is quick claw, spore and luck, thats its. well I say thats it, there is one option, Skill Swap. you use it on Executor for its ability to boost speed in the sun and then set up sunny day, I don't remember if it lasts after the target of skill swap faints but it might be the only other way. failing that, you could stall with rain dance so you survive a hit and then try a combo of growth and HP water. I know what you're thinking, all these sound good, but its a matter of testing.
      there is niche option for Butterfree, shadow ball, I knows its physical, but its strong and its coverage. my current moveset on it is silver wind, psybeam, sleep powder and HP ice and I see that being the set until the league. giga drain will replace HP for a while as I can team it again later and psychic will be the upgrade of psybeam. maybe dream eater and solarbeam for parts of R2. and I'll save the thunder and lightning summoning for sparkafree.
      give nugget bridge some thought for your team runs, it will only work to a point with solos as they will get too strong for zubat to or even ekans to knockout

      @@jptheflipper3825 I'm half tempted to backburner Paras for quite a while. That thing is stupid in Round 2. Like, genuinely stupid. It felt like I was using every trick in the book to still not have a very high chance of success. I'm not sure that Paras is the health choice right now :P But I will get back to it!
      The tankiness of Gyarados has caught me off guard a few times. I mean, never when I have an Electric move of course, but when I'm relying on neutral moves, or even Rock moves he's quite the task to bring down depending on what I'm running. Soon, that power will be mine!
      The concept of Flareon with HP Water broke my brain a little. Granted, in FR/LG especially Flareon falls off and so much of it has to do with the fact that the game isn't kind to a few typings - particularly defensively. Especially in R2 as we've seen time and again. For a team build though I would love to play with them all. Maybe I should just have some fun and make an Eevee team challenge. Start with all 5 in Gen 3 and roll.
      The simplest recipes are often the ones that taste the best. Did you know Teriyaki sauce is only 3 ingredients? I spent years rejecting store bought ones because I didn't like the flavour, then found that out, and haven't bought a teriyaki sauce since. Knowledge is power! And equipment of course.. but knowledge above all. I miss buttons on my phone... I was a T9 ace! For the whole 2 years that was a relevant skill.
      Hmm.. I have considered Natures that boost stats like Def, but in a solo run I'm always so biased towards offense. Especially when I have a boosting move I really should be focusing more on theory crafting. Another creator has offered to help me get some GameHook components working for me so that's going to be invaluable in making better decisions I feel.
      The only problem with trying to steal Skill Swap from Exeggcutor is that the Champ always sends in Charizard long before Exegg. I tried Quick Claw. After 10 resets with no proc, and no Fire Blast miss, I went with Substitute. At least then I'm guaranteed to survive the Charizard. I'm excited to show it.. but I do NOT want to route the second playthrough. Not at the moment anyway.
      Fair play on saving more moves for the other 'Frees. I hadn't really considered Shadow Ball, but if you're leaning in with Silverwind a little as well I could see it being quite useful. There are so many options to these things it's a little overwhelming at times.
      I hadn't considered that with the Nugget bridge exploit. Eventually you will be too strong to knock out - unless you have like False Swipe or Growl or something to waste a lot of time. By the time Zubat can't knock you out with that tactic you'd be max money. And 4 hours into the run at Nugget bridge :P

I also don't think Arcainine is a better one to face either as it can also out speed and KO. and yeah I have noticed that, the AI will send out the best opponents for the Pokemon currently in play, it is literally Pidgeot and then Charizard, a nasty combo. and again I forget about Substitute, I never use it the same way most solo runs don't use double team. taking a break is the best option for a while, its not healthy to be staring at that dead eyed zombie bug mushroom for any length of time and it is appropriate, it is a RUclips tradition started by Scott to promise Parasect and then have us wait, I am sure he approves.
      electric moves are the standard for taking out Gyarados now and always, despite it having a better special defense, that 4x weakness to electric is always its downfall, I have felled the champions with a Pikachu in the past just to show off. its intimidate ability saves it from any a KO from rock and other powerful neutral moves, but from 4, there is an answer to that, special rock types, ancient power and power gem are your options and the only special attacking rock type to get either of those is Omastar, although slowking with power gem is next best, you will get to try that yourself soon I am sure
      I did not know that about Teriyaki, I'll have to look into that, I like my Asian food and could make use of it very often. I never played that one, I use a Nokia so its Snake for me, I do miss having the Crazy Frog for my ringtone though, couldn't get it for this one LOL.
      to be fair with nature I only focus on it if I really need to for a run of any kind. my fighting run for example absolutely required Hitmonchan to have a + special attack nature to help it along. my Buttafreez right now is a neutral hardy nature as the IV's were good, when you start more weaker unevolved Pokemon it will start coming into play more because you will need a good nature and IV's plus EV's to make up for the lower base stats. Light ball Pikachi and Thick club Cubone come to mind for that. it is good you are working more and more on game hook and getting some help it will make a difference for your routing and planning in runs.
      Flareon did suffer in Gen 3 and 4 and most Gens, but 3 especially. the stats are one thing, it has low speed, defense and HP and its fire type so rock and ground basically KO it every time and then there is the moveset, its a physical attacker with few good physical moves and its STAB goes off its weaker attacking stat. that is a rough combo and yet I will still run one with a speedy nature and a mixed set of dig, shadow ball, flamethrower and either sunny day or body slam and have it as my go to fire type. Gen 4 was crawl to it though and you'll witness this in SS, it got one STAB physical fire move and instead of the awesome flare Blitz, it got fire fang and it lost shadow ball as a physical move. it got it rough, but I still love it, if you run it in fire red, you want curse as an egg move and HP rock and I will stand by that advise, you'll like it in a team, I'd love to see a fire red full eevee team, it would dominate
      good news, Buttafreez is through the R1 league, it got a few resets on Lance because of Gyarados and dragonite and on the champion, not because of fire or flying moves, but rock tomb from rhydon KO's because HP ice doesn't KO. I can confirm also that a stronger HP Ice (as mine is about 50 in power) will KO dragonite and do good damage against neutral targets, but I switched for giga drain until Agatha as it wasn't need until then, I should be at R2 by tomorrow and finished by the weekend. I'll let you know how rough the R2 is after.
      that zubat is quite awful as it can't do much and since its only moves are leech life, astonish and supersonic, a flying type will pretty much never lose to it, time waster moves are handy, but avoid growl, zubat is weak enough already. only 4 hours, I spent a whole weekend there once, I knew I was going to get all the game corner TM's and Porygon for style points and needed the cash.

      @@jptheflipper3825 I agree, and I think you're right. Just like so many creators before me I'm going to promise a Paras video then delay it. Hopefully not for too long! I just don't have it in me to route that second run right now. Thank you, some rest has been MUCH needed. I wouldn't say I'm 100%, but I'm feeling infinitely better.
      That's right! Again, special Rock moves what? I have a lot to get used to in the new generation, but not being beholden to every damn intimidate in the game when I want to use a Rock move is going to be such a nice shift. I wonder what the theoretically "weakest" possible Pokémon/move combo that would take out the Champ's Gyarados. Like Pichu with Thundershock at level "X".
      It blew my mind! So simple! Oh man.. the crazy frog. I still have the pirate virus song from season 1 of Archer as my ringtone. It confuses people and I love it.
      That's a big reason why I enjoy letting my Pokémon evolve. I prefer challenges that challenge my brain, not my patience. Oh absolutely! Even the little things like Repel step counters, friendship values, and he mentioned making a dynamically counting damage calculator so that I can see exactly what my ranges are and when, live in combat. THAT part is almost going to feel like cheating, but I'm hoping it'll help hone my instincts a little.
      I've been thinking more and more about best to do some team challenges moving forward. I feel like an "Eevee breeder" challenge would work nicely. Since they're SO diverse in their capabilities alone, plus have a lot of moves that synergize well into a team like Baton Pass and some set up. It'll be a ton of fun I think, despite me also being worried about changing formats and getting super stuck. I'll be fine :P
      HP Ice does cover most of the problems that I feel Butterfree would have in R2. That's not to say all of them. What is your current moveset? HP Ice, Giga, Psychic, Sleep? I'll be interested to know how it goes, but then of course how it compares to the other Butterfrees. Also yes... having my HP set at 70 power every time is super nice.
      Fair enough! I guess you can max out your cash AND Nuggets if you grind against it hard enough. Instant Porygon by Celadon City just sounds like a swag move to me :P
