- I'll show you how you can easily grow collard greens from seeds in containers this fall. It's not hard to do with a few simple steps and approaches. I'll discuss containers, potting mix, varieties, fertilizer, how to harvest, and etc. It's time to grow!
Perfect information & tips! I've had some nursery collards quarantined for about a couple weeks; just been watering them with a mosquito dunk tea and a little neem oil and they're already pretty big. This video got me excited to get them potted up! So grateful for the Black gardeners who post on youtube. My granny was the gardener and we lost her when I was pretty young. Thank you for helping us keep the culture. 💜

Hello, I’m so glad I checked out your video before I went outside today. I was planning on transplanting all of my seedlings at once. I would’ve done so prematurely as they yet to have four leaves on them. Thank you for saving me the misery of ruining my beautiful seedlings. God bless

💐❤👍👍I MIX COLLARDS, MUSTARD, TURNIP GREENS, CHICKEN STOCK, BACON OR HAM, SALT & PEPPER😋😋
Wow! Very nice! Sounds Yummy!
I was wondering how many plants to a pot. I have a five gallon and you answered my question as to how many per container.
Hello! Glad that information helped. Take care and Happy Gardening!
I love the beautiful green background. Very informative tutorial thank you for sharing.I just finished sowing more collard greens seeds and other brassicas.Have you tried broccoli raab and broccoli romanesco?
You are so welcome! I have not grown the raab nor the romanesco. Some time ago, I bought some raab at a market and it was very good. I'll keep those varieties in mind. Thanks!
Hi! I'm a new follower 💕 can I just sow right into a 5 gallon bucket? Should I put multiple seeds in the middle and thin down to one plant after germination? I'm a lil confused and starting in the cells or cups haven't got me nothing but leggy plants. 😞
Yes, absolutely you can directly sow in your bucket. I normally plant more seeds than I plan to grow just in case all do not germinate and then thin them out just as you indicated. You can plant more than one row--try two--three rows. Hope that helps. Thanks for joining! Take Care and Happy Gardening.
I think I started when the temps were too hot in Texas
👍
NEver grown these and started a couple weeks ago with awesome germination. I think I need to thin them. I’m not sure how big they get it’s a heading variety so I’m guessing It gets big like a cabbage head.
Hello! When I think of heading collards, I think of the Morris Heading Collard Green variety. These do need about a foot in width to grow to maturity and can get 24 inches or more tall. But, you can pick the leaves when smaller and more tender. This may make them more manageable. In which case, if your container is 18 to 24 inches or more in diameter you should be able to get 3 to 4 plants in comfortably. On the other-hand, If you want to grow this plant to its fullest size and your container is only 12 inches in diameter, just one plant (two might be pushing it). Hope that helps. Happy Gardening!
Your so sweet wish you were my neighbor ❤💙💜
That's so nice of you. Take care and Happy Gardening!
I need help! I have some seeds planted in one of those mesh indoor garden things. I used potting soil, and miracle grow fertilizer, but they aren't surviving. They grow about a couple inches tall, maybe 4, but then they fall over and die. My mom said I needed to plant them deeper, but when I did, they wouldn't grow. What am I doing wrong? And can I put more soil on them after they grow so high to prevent them from falling over?
Hello CD! It's okay to start your collards indoors, but you need to transplant them into larger containers outside when big enough. At this point, not knowing what zone you are in, it may be too late for fall collards. Try again in the spring, it will be here before you know it. You did the right thing using potting mix and starting indoors. They just need to be transplanted outside when about 3 to 4 inches tall into larger containers, like a five gallon container with drain holes. They need that outside sun and to not be too crowded. When moving plants started indoors to the outdoors, you need to do what is called a hardening off process--that means put the young plants outdoors gradually, increasing the amount of time each day for about five days. If you are not using a porch or patio or putting your containers flat on the ground but using a balcony or deck high off the ground, make sure it's sturdy and safe. Let your mom help. Put one plant per 5 gallon container with potting mix (if short on space or containers, you can squeeze in two plants). You are doing GREAT! Every gardener encounters problems, so don't be discouraged. You can do it! Take care and God Bless.
Thanks for all the good advice. I think the overcrowding might be the issue. Thanks again.
Also, be careful with chemical fertilizers like miracle grow. It could be burning the roots/plants. Dilute the fertilizer to 50% or use organic fertilizer instead. Fish fertilizer is great for seedlings. It’s a trial and error process.
Can you use blood meal instead of fertilizer?
Welcome! Bone meal can be a good source of nitrogen. But be careful as it can burn the plants. Be sure to follow the directions on the package. Note--you'll miss out on providing other nutrients like phosphorous found in an all purpose fertilizer. Take Care and Happy Gardening.
you can make your own potty mixed with peat moss and sand 50/50
Thanks for sharing!
In the 1930 we ate greens from the hills
Hello!. Thanks for that comment. It's a reminder of how resourceful one must
be some times. Take Care!
well balance can be any number long as all three numbers are the same you do not need phosphorus or potassium cuz you're not going fruit and you're not blooming flowers all you really need is nitrogen
Nitrogen is important for greens but phosphorus helps with root development and other plant processes. Likewise potassium helps ward off disease for example. So, in my opinion, you need all three nutrients. However, you can go with a fertilizer with higher nitrogen and lower Phosphorous and Potassium. Thanks for stopping by and take care!
