did they give the body a breathalyzer? that was a lot of alcohol in that cabinet they gave him the day before. back in the 50's drinking and driving was quite natural like smoking cigarettes at the movie theatre.

He was terminally ill with kidney disease, which back then was a painful way to die. Many people think he did himself in. I tend to agree.

Mike was killed sadly local to me, i pass the spot weekly and visit his grave on a regular basis. Hawthorns Tourist Trophy Garage is no longer there but Hawthorns Garage is in a different place as to where TT was in Farnham. Our first formula One Champion and i lived two doors down from Mikes head mechanic son, who told us some fabulous story of "The Golden Boy". RIP Mike Hawthorn

Hawthorne seems to have been a pompous twit but how is anyone in that situation supposed to foresee the outcome of merely slowing down on the pit straight when all you can see is a few blurry cars behind you in a shaking mirror? Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. There are so many "what if"s that Hawthorne can't be blamed totally. For example what if Macklins car didn't have a sloped rear? Then Le Veigh's car wouldn't have been launched and there would have likely been far less carnage, possibly none. You can say Hawthorne was guilty of reckless driving, but not directly responsible for 84 people dead.
And also the image of him drinking champagne after the race is taken out of context far too much. There are photos of him looking miserable after the race, and some of him smiling. He was just trying to go along with the forced victory "celebrations" as best he could.
I've seen some people blame Le Veigh for being a bad driver. In this situation driving skill plays no part. If a car swerves in front of you when you're doing 150 mph there is no time to react.
And I don't blame Macklin either. Of course you're going to serve to avoid a car braking sharply in front of you.
So people look to blame the drivers, but I can't really blame any one individu

@@crowkid5553 bullshit. 'Hawthorn had overshot his pits and stopped. Getting out, he was immediately ordered by his team to get back in and do another lap to get away from the total confusion and danger. When he pit stopped during the next lap, he staggered out of the car completely distraught, adamant that he had caused the catastrophe.' the accident happened on lap 36, the Jaguar team made 307. Finally, the voice of reason! Some truly hideous, uncharitable comments on this thread- almost celebrating Mike's death. You'd think he had deliberately set out to kill other people. An enquiry in the racing accident CLEARED him of any wrong doing.

What does Donald Trump have to do with this? This obsession with Trump is a sign of mental health issues. The guy leans nationalist, lowered taxes, and favors Chicago School economic theory, and people just absolutely lose their minds. Truly bizarre.
