Been saying this for years. Jason is one of the more realistic depictions of what a person would have to become to do these kind of things. I think about someone like Nathan Drake and imagine how he must be one twisted MFer to take people out without blinking but his character doesn't actually play into his intent at all. Tomb Raider 2013 tried to show Lara having a moment with her first kill but then its just kind of brushed off like she is fine with killing now. Jason gradually shifts and changes into someone who really shouldn't be likeable. Its almost like breaking bad. He becomes what he has to for survival at first but then he realizes that he loves what he's become. Either way, great vid. You got my sub!

      I don't think it's that hard
Have you ever heard of the concept of "moral injury"
In a case like Nathan Drake, he doesn't really take any lives that could be considered innocent. It's almost always self-defense. As long as he subconsciously looks at it like that it's unlikely he would actually have a break down or anything.
I remember watching this video where a guy was interviewing a vet who was a chopper gunner, the only event he actually seemed traumatized by is the only event where he had his morals tested. He was watching over a convoy that was getting shot at from a building, they were waiting for orders to fire but it wasn't coming, he fired anyway. After he saw women and children running from the building and wondered if he had killed any.p

No one makes more sense to become Jason than Jason. A spoil rich kid with an older brother who seems to be some sort of combat vet. Jason knew how to parachute, hang glide, shoot a gun, and probably a bunch of other skills we see him start with right in the beginning. Spoil rich kids in real life just squander the opportunities given to them so often. Jason just happened to be one who came from everything, went to nothing, and acquired everything on his own.

@@remrem-gx3mlit’s a stereotype due to how many squander different hobbies and skills for fun. It’s due to the fact that oftentimes they are totally unrelatable and we view them as such by them doing this that we could even say it’s an invented stereotype.
Seriously, Jason is even described as having exactly that beforehand in the backstory of his character.
That aside, he could have become useful later on if it weren’t for Rook island as an accountant or fitness instructor if he got a real job instead of partying it up. He wasn’t all that harmful until he was pushed to be in the story of FC3.
And those rich kids being “less of a threat” is just weird in my eyes in your comment. Anyone can be a threat when they present actually being a threat. An ambush predator hides and strikes from the flank, as we played in FC3. Otherwise, they are loud and easily spotted.
Be aware as best you can. Be like Jason fresh after the start, building himself up and learning. But do it freely, without anyone putting you on their strings. Do that for yourself.

He’s a really good representation of what indoctrination does to a man who doesn’t have a purpose, he found purpose, it made him feel alive, it made him feel like he mattered, but what did he really become? A monster. I struggled with it a lot when I got out of the army, I was a infantryman, an expert grenadier, a expert Stryker driver, but none of it mattered when I came home, Jason knows the emptiness that will come with escaping the island

    • @ThatOneDude7
      @ThatOneDude7 Месяц назад +8

Also him blacking out and almost killing Liza, and then coming to and realising he has a knife on her throat.
The whole final path he was walking, Liza was shown to be a demon. If the blackout hadn't stopped, he would have slit the throat of a demon, not even knowing how Liza died, just like he has no idea how the guards died.
Maybe the original Jason was still hidden away inside, fighting, kicking and yelling for Jason to stop, pleading and crying in despair, which managed to wake Jason up right before killing her. Something that never happens. Jason never woke up from his blackout until the job was done.
It's a shame Ubisoft won't ever reach this peak, and we are partly to blame. When FC3 released, everybody hated Jason, so why would they bother going through that in a cancel culture era, risking it and hoping the audience gets the message years down the line

There is some suspicious things about Dennis and Citra. Like how does Dennis know Jason's full name? He's told Jason not Jason Brody. Then how is the ambush a trap if it was a trap for Jason? Like was Vaas big brained or did Citra tell him. Then what about Vaas stabbing Jason with the blade? Did Vaas actually stab him or was it drugs or something? But either way Jason "kills" Vaas with that same knife. You know the super important and protected ceremonial knife. Not to mention that Citra shows up right after the fight so was she there the whole time? Then Jason wakes up back in the temple with Citra.
All this stuff makes me think Vaas was still under Citra's influence in some way. Where he wouldnt preform the ritual but still loved her. Also Vaas should totally know where the Citra's temple is, he's just not attacking it right? How else would these "plot holes" happen?
Also Vaas calls Citra his sister but they have different last names and ethnicities. Vaas also has a separated backstory from Citra. Vaas tells us about Citra's "Me or them" ultimatum but for Jason that includes killing his friends, girlfriend but more importantly his brother. The last piece of his family excluding his mother. If Citra's ultimatum is supposed to have you kill your past self by killing the people that tie you to it then Vaas can't be her brother. I personally think Vaas and Citra aren't actually related but Citra's spell broke Vaas in a way where he thought they were family. Thus making him opt out of the ritual since its taboo to sleep with your sister. She then sent him to be a double agent for the pirates. That might also be the other reason why he let Jason run, to send him to Citra if he could survive the jungle. I mean Dennis says he found us on the beach but theres no way. Unless he's using beach to mean the embankment of the rivers, he lied about where he found Jason. ITS ALL SO SUSPICIOUS!

I didn't realize before that you get the subtle hints outside of the drug trips that Jason is slowly losing his grip in reality and getting desensitized in murder and chaos, when he's having the time of his life after rescuing Liza and when he's talking about killing as if it's like winning a swimming competition.
Noticed a comment above talking about Tomb Raider 2013 and I agree that the fact that the story never really acknowledges that Lara was essentially going on the same path as Jason Brody did in Far Cry 3, except that after her first kill, the characters nor the plot really cares that she's butchering everyone with cold blood and she's become desensitized to violence. It was only 5 years later in Shadow of the Tomb Raider they showed Lara losing her grip for a moment.

I imagine it looking like the Joker hallucinations that Batman experiences in Arkham Knight. Vaas almost like his very own fucked up angel on his shoulder and Citra his shoulder devil, egging him on, whispering sweet nothings.
He wants to listen to Citra but knows he shouldn't. Her deceitful whispers almost like a tantalizing urge. While Vaas is always screaming in his ear, screaming at him to stay the normal path, to stay a good man. Jason doesn't want to listen to Vaas but knows he should.

While I wouldn't classify him as one of the greatest protagonists in gaming, he is still a solid one that was underappreciated. Many people found him annoying, but don't seem to realize that him being like that was on purpose to further drive home how much the island changed him. He went from a rich socal party guy to, as he himself admits, a monster. A killing machine drunk on the power he feels when killing.
When I played Far Cry 4 I quickly noticed how muted Ajay Ghale appeared in contrast. Jason was talking a lot, Ajay rarely ever speaks. When playing Jason I felt like playing an actual person, Ajay didn't feel like it as much. Then ubisoft decided "screw it, protagonist doesn't need to speak", which is a damn shame. Part of the FC appeal to me is feeling like being there and having the POV-character speak and actively take part in the plot goes a long way to do this.
There is more exploration and nuance missing, hence why I wouldn't classify him as one of the greatest. But he sure was the best in the Far Cry series nad at least had a personality and development.

This is exactly why I loved the insanity DLC of Far Cry 6. Playing as Vaas against Jason highlights how they become completely interchangable between one another. He taunts Vaas in an almost identical way that Vaas taunts him in FC3. It's a common thread through all the DLC, but the use of a mirror as an upgrade station feels unbelievably appropriate. They have walked the same path, to see how Vaas can overcome any aspect of Jason, he must first overcome that part of himself. Not to mention how the stories mirror eachother, Jason's plunge into insanity, and Vaas' regression into sanity

As you grow in strength and are motivated by the thrill of the kill. So does Jason.
I love how the island is insanity, its a cycle of doing the same thing over and over again.
One man rises in strength, bravery and cruelty, he takes over the island, intrigued by her mystery, drunk on power. But the island doesnt want to be ordered around, the island wants someone stronger yet, someone who wont stop the fight but will fight forever, so she kills him, and then the cycle repeats.

Murder, jumping off waterfalls while high, murder with knives, etc.

it does not need a myriad of characters that then all get to few screen time. the characters are not equiped with a ton of flaws and back story. and the story does not hold a lot of plot lines and twists.

I kinda bought it just because i saw a ton of this game on the game shelves. at first i wasn't sure i was going to enjoy this, then came the vaas scene and was immediately blown away by his dialogue. i remember laughing when grant died thinking that the only person who has the realistic chance of surviving this game doesn't even get past the tutorial and i am stuck with this kid.
after a 10+ years , i still comeback to this game from time to time. it's like a coming of age movie with elements from lord of the flies. This game has asked me alot of questions about myself and taught me on how to decide and plan. (apart from Jason's descent into madness and murder spree of course :) ) this game came to me in a time when i wasn't really sure of what i want to do in life, living day by day to simply exist. almost relationships with family were not really good, just like being stuck in island where you just try to survive and your starting from scratch with no one to guide you.

I like how Jason is also in a way a reflection of who you are as well. Because as this game encourage you to kill, become stronger and do all these sidequests, in the way you the player yourself slowly lose your humanity once you are met with the final and decisive choice. Also it's amazing how the island and the savage setting just releases the darker aspects of Jason's personality loose, that if it was in normal society, he would not become such a monster. Him being pretty immature and an adrenaline junkie, and even if he is a competent person as in school he was an athlete and got good grades, he has this crazy and wild side to his personality that is just fucking amped up by the island and by the Rakyat people, and also by his quest for revenge. He not only loves that he is basically made for the life of the island and he is the ultimate warrior here, but also all the respect from the Rakyat people and the rush it comes from taking vengeance on all of Vaas' goons, because in a way in his dark corner of the mind this gives him validation, he is somebody here and he has basically become addicted to the thrill of killing, to the vengeance he wants to enact on Vaas, Hoyt and all of their men, and slowly he becomes more and more of a monster. This anger, sadism, craziness, also his addiction to the thrill of killing and the respect of the Rakyat people become more and more prevalent in Jason, until he is put forward with the big choice at the end, and even in the good ending, even though he does save his friends and they leave the island, he will most likely never be the same person again and will probably feel like a soldier after a war, and have time to think and to live with the reality of the things he has done and reflect on who he has become. He will never be the same normal and innocent young man he was before the events of the game, and his entire life is changed. His relationship with his friends, his girlfriend and his brother will never be the same and will probably be strained as well. Especially him nearly killing Liza and after everything he did, it will definitely be hard for her to keep her relationship with him. In either ending, Jason has lost himself, but there is hope for him in the good ending of managing to move forward and redeem himself.

With FC6, it feels like a mercenary getting exhausted of their client more than a revolution. There isn’t a lot of visible growth and I can’t really connect the dots on the Danny as I progress in the game aside from skills to kill with, since they did serve in the military it’s not all that crazy.

I always appreciated Jason. More importantly our agency with this faceless guy (First person ;))
With his dialogue about “killing turning into winning” if you go visit your friends to get an understanding on his head space.
I was 1000% on board with the WarPath!
It wasn’t until he saw his little bro that I wanted to steer the ship.
It’s BEAUTIFUL! When his big bro dies, he enters the savage world of fighting non-stop.
Yet it is the presence of his little bro that pulls him back.
That’s why I was super happy with the iconic ending of saving your friends… yet I speak with IRL friends and most of them got turned by the killing.
With the story being separate of gameplay for them. Cause shooting AI cod style was the selling point of the mainstream.

fc2 also have one of the most interesting character to play with. jason uniqueness is the duality between him and vaas, how it's duality combined into one with vaas.

After watching this video, the alternate ending of FC3 now makes more sense. The first time I played FC3 the alternate ending seemed like an "out of the blue" option but because of this video it kinda makes more sense now.

Yeah, I think it made sense if you look at the whole story and jasons transformation thus far, its not a simple red or blue choice ending, What happened to this writing in the far cry franchise? because nothing afterwards comes close

I never understood the Jason hate, like he is perfect for what the story needed and wanted to present. Not a deep or complicated character at all, just basic enough for people to self insert at first and feel the consequences later. Unfortunetly he might be the only character in the game that was utilized to the maximum potential.

When I played this game years ago, my thoughts about Jason were very similar to yours. I was then very surprised that people consider him a "boring protagonist", because I felt that there definitely was quite a bit of depth to him.
So what I'm trying to say is that I'm very glad that you made this video. I see now that I'm not the only one who liked his development throught the game. Finally, some validation after all these years!

Hes a unique character, and his transformation is not something we have seen in a game before, atleast not in a FPS game, and especially a Far Cry game. Again I also kinda disliked Jason the first time around when I played the game, but have now started to really appriciate him.

the Tautau curropted Jason from an innocent college kid to the strongest killer on the island. his progression isnt SUPPOSED to seem realistic, he has a magical tattoo that makes him simultaneously stronger, more able to regenerate from wounds and more bloodthirsty.
thats why i like jason and the choice at the end, do you give in and accept what the tautau is doing to do, or do you give it all up (the tautau doesent work outside of rook island) to live a somewhat normal life again

Wait,. people thought Jason transformation was unrealistic? Do they have any idea of how much mental damage killing people while being a good person can cause? Especially looking how many areas you have to conquer on Far Cry 3, if Jason captured all of them...

I never viewed Jason as annoying or a bad protagonist. I always thought his journey was very intriguing, going from your average spoiled brat to a merciless and detatched killing machine. Does it always hit? Not necessarily, but it’s still intriguing regardless, especially when you see the parallels with Vaas and how Jason could become the very thing he swore to destroy. I personally view the good choice as the canon ending, given the whole plight to kill Vaas and Hoyt stemmed from Riley being “killed,” but once he not only realizes he’s alive but he’s forced to torture him, that’s him at his lowest and finally realizing the path he’s on isn’t worth it anymore. Plus personally, I find it’s much more impactful for someone who’s become so monstrous to leave that life behind and try to do good again, however hard it may be.

It’s funny. Far Cry 2 had an unvoiced character going into the heart of darkness. But he was already a Merc with bloody hands. I always thought Far Cry 3 was them trying to properly tell the story the set out to do in 2. This video really helps with that development theory

To me, this feels also like many book characters as well.
One of my favorite characters in fiction is Rand Al'thor (the wheel of time book series) as similar to Jason, outside forces influence him in a direction that his younger self would never choose. "The end justifies the means." Was the mindset he began to adopt as the series progressed, until things snapped.
Without going into spoilers. This feels very much like that and I like reading about various kinds of characters as you get a multitude of philosophies and perspectives and allowing YOU to choose which you would want to follow.

People always talked about Vash, but for me Jason was far better and more interesting character.
The evolution of Jason is fascinating. How he went from a soft spoken, spoiled rich adrenaline junkie man child to be a complete psychotic lunatic who kills for pleasure. Jason becomes exactly what he hated. He end up becoming Vash himself
