David Morgan Thank you David for taking the time! It was something else to work on my first Olive, I don't know how this wood turns dry but wet it was... like slicing cheese with a sharp knife, you can feel the cut but it's smooth and brings out long shavings, and again, love the smell of it. You can see the wood polishes up while I was just sanding, I think I could see it reflecting light when I had it up to 400, so then with the abrasive wax and friction polish it came out mirror smooth. I'll be turning the rest of the blanks ASAP :)

It was a true pleasure to work on that Olive wood, and I do have a few more blanks ready to be turned which I will do as soon as time allows, this was my first turning with Olive, which I always knew was very good for turning, just couldn't find anything piece worth turning. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open now for as much as I can find! lucky for me I do live in the land of Olives (and wine, which I don't care for...).
Dude nice, I love Olive wood but its hard to get here in the Great Plains, not a tree that is native. Only grown as ornamental trees in peoples yards. Good Job on the video. One bit of advice from the voice of experience, when using the goose neck hollowing tool back your rest up so the strait part of the shank is on the rest anywhere on the curve can twist it if you catch, I blew out the side of a vessel once and learned my lesson.
Cyrus Fillmore (Time Lapse Turner) Thank you Cy for a very good advice, it did happen to me before, I blew up a piece doing exactly that, I'm finding it hard to remember that point when I'm working, but I bet you next time I'll pay more attention. And give me some time to see how my next job will pay, maybe I'll find it in me to ship you some olive pieces to play around with :)
+William Howard I can tell you there are some features missing on this lathe, but for a starter turner all the way up, it's a good all around lathe, and for what it gives you, the price is in the right range.
WILL R Sure Will, I used a combination of an abrasive wax called "EEE", it's an Australian product but is available world wide, I was able to order it locally here in Italy, and it has a complimentary friction polish called "Shellawax", a combination of shellac and wax and some diluting agent. I can tell you the "EEE" smells like a gas station died and rotted in your shop, while the "Shellawax" smells quite pleasant... I'm using a gas rated respirator when using the "EEE", just can't stand the smell...
So I am guessing the wood was green when you turned it since you just cut the tree down. If that is the case you were able to turn and finish them without them cracking as they dried? They turned out great you brought out the grain in the olive very nicely.
+Dirk Mitchell Thanks Dirk, and sorry for the late reply, for personal stuff going on, I did turn the fresh right out of the wood, and I found that Olive is very very stable, it never cracked on me or deformed in a way that would need extra care, mostly it deforms on the face of the wood, where the grain is spalting, and it gives the things made of it a rippling effect which I just love. +William Howard Yep, it's a very common Chinese made lathe, each company colors it differently and maybe a small change in motor hp, but they are all the same lathe.
José Molina So far it's seems alright, no noticeable warping, but I don't have it anymore as I did it as a gift, I do have new small bowl I made from the same piece (will upload the video today or tomorrow), and I'll keep an eye on it and update as it goes, it will interesting for every one to see how and how much, it warps (or crack...).
Thank Yuval. For me is a very beautiful wood, but with problematic drying some times. I have so much of this wood here, too many olives trees in Priego de Córdoba. Some lumber are cutted 4 or 5 years ago and go on warping. Regards.
José Molina I hope the thin finished items won't go on to warp for years... but it's only natural, some very pretty things can be created from wood warping.

your lathe looks like the one sold here in the states by harbor freight like custom chris bought and i guess many other people buy to get started
