I always loved that guy. No scandals, no sordid drug stories, no childish behavior on the road, never tried to hog the spotlight on stage. He's probably the most well adjusted out of all the mega rock stars I can think of.

people need to know that this man is a musicians musician....to me...he is the person i look up to the most in music....Even above pagey and hendrix and so on...john paul jones is the absolute limit.
Word ! He had the most skills out of the whole band. Page might have grabbed the spot light with all the flash, but Jonesy had the chops and music theory backing him. Keyboard skills, bass, guitar and a way better mandolin player.

Well, Mr. Jones, through records (especially LZ2) was my main teacher! McCartney, Squire, Rutherford, Butler, Schacher were around too, but JPJ was "The Man". I still remember how hard it was to learn all those bass parts on LZ2 because he seemed to play it differently on every verse/chorus. Of course I eventually figured out - that was the point, and good players could just improvise in the key, etc., but at first it was quite exasperating trying to remember it all! :)
And I so agree that inspiration in technique can and does come from everywhere! Techno synth bass, slappers like Flea, guitarist, keyboardist, xylophonists, jazz, blues, Afro-based world, funk, metal, reggae, classical, even easy-listening, etc.. Though your style may not directly reflect those styles, so many tidbits of inspiration work their way into your thinking, playing and writing! And then you become a fully balanced and versatile player, able to do good work in nearly any field, IMO - which I find very important if you're going to augment your living with general studio work.
Hard to put into words the brilliant start (and continuing inspiration) JPJ brought to my life!!! And what an amazing, fun ride it's been! Thanks so much, Mr. Jones!!!
Young musicians need to take heed of what he says here because it's extremely important. Listen to all kinds of music, even stuff that you may not think that you'd be interested in because you will learn different approaches and techniques which would not have occurred to you otherwise. This would include Classical, Jazz, Rock, Blues, R&B, Country, World Music, etc.
Fantastic to hear Jonesy so open and dispensing great advice right there.
His bass lines are melodies all by themselves.

JPJ and McCartney (yes, Paul McCartney believe it or not) are two of the only rock and roll bass players that can carry the melody on the bass. An absolutely classy human being.
don't forget Andy Fraser from free was brilliant at carrying the melody on the bass.

@basslover171 The funny thing is it's only his real hair in the concert footage, the fantasy sequence where he plays the organ and goes for a horse ride with the mask on was shot about a year later and he'd cut his hair short by then, so they had to find a wig to match the live scenes.

@muzboz I'd agree if it was simply the latest model with the addition of a signature but if there is something special about the instrument. eg it has been customised in some particular way like the Geddy Lee Fender Jazz has extra thin neck and Badass I Bridge and 1972 pickup spacing.This gives the instrument something special that you may desire and the signature is just a tribute to the artist you might love.

I could not of side it better.
I've been playing bass for
53 year's..and when I started out..I could not hear enough music of all kinds..my style is all my Owen..2 fingers most time's..and I've been known to use just one on one song..yes a pick is vary important to a bass player..for me it makes my number one sing.
@DeltaGaryGordon It's an old modification done to get a cleaner tone,Jaco was famous for doing this mod to all his stack-nob Fender Jazzbasses,in his book he explains a little bit more on why HE does it but the stack nob setup supposedly lowers the output so by having only 1 tone nob the bass has more clarity and definition.
I never played a stacknob that I preferred over the tradional 2 vol 1 tone setup,just dont jive for me,check one out against each other and see what I mean.
JPJ had so much more to do with Zep's sound than one J Page would ever admit to... and that is for sure.

If you think synthesizers don't sound as cool as guitars i get it. That album was put out in 1979 and it's totally showing where music went in the first half of the 80's. I agree with petrosvardanian it's different. A friend of mine's favorite zep song is fool in the rain. He dj's and loves the time signiture bonham plays on it. He doesn't really listen to early zep and still thinks bonham is amazing. Everyone has different tastes.

@richymoore He does deserve such a thing, except that signature editions are bullshit. And often a bit gimped down. Seriously, just go out and buy a Fender Jazz Bass or Precision Bass. :) To have someone's signature on it is a bit lame, no?
Respect for your sentiment, though! I think I'm just having a bit of a bitch about signature edition guitars and basses. A bit lame, I reckon.
Yeah, and all those years I wanted a Fender Jazz because JPJ played one. I've a had a couple, and still have one. But, it's the Fender Precision where I found my voice, and play it almost exclusively now. As JPJ said, it's not the equipment, rather, it's your hands, and technique that truly makes your defining sound. So true

@PutItAway101 The first time I saw that I was 11, and I was confused as to what was going on in relation to JPJ's hair, I found it hilarious when I realised it was in fact his haircut. Highlight of the film for me.
@bgrimles Oh yes there is. When he delivered my pizza last week from PizzaExpress he brought me a salami when he knows I like pepperami. Plus he didnt bring me my change but then he always does that.
And there he is playing with the pic there's a guy in another video calling me reader of nonsense because John Paul Jones has never played the pick well there it is. A lot of my old pictures of him in Cream Magazine from the '70s that I picked up and other stuff online he does use to pick. This guy is calling me an idiot saying he uses his fingers 99.9% of the time which is bullshit. He does use a pic a lot.
