I got a Helix on a hunch and now I’m a huge fan boy, even coming from Fractal stuff. I haven’t gotten the hang of the stock cab blocks, but just using quality IRs makes it so easy to get a good FOH sound. I just bring my Helix whenever I play at my church and having the quality of sound plus the convenience of my whole rig with a pedalboard being in the floor unit makes it one of my favorite pieces of gear I’ve ever gotten.
Your video makes me think just getting a Helix rack with a power amp too would be a dope setup for a physical amp/cab rig.

    • @AdamManley7

If you don’t use the internal cabs it rocks out, compared to stock fractal though it’s not even close the IR list is way more than line 6 models

People who still bash Line 6 have NO clue what they're talking about, and are probably still holding on to the perception from the 90s about modelers. They've come a LONG way, and Line 6 has been at the forefront of it, with some others. Respect to Line 6, for sure. I honestly wish they'd bring us a modernized, newer, Spider Valve series. They're killer modelers & tube amps, especially for the price on the secondary market. Great vid again man!

@@Count_Apollyon5 yeah, the Spider Valve's were a great idea in the mid 2000s, and pushed the idea of hybrid tech with the tube preamp and poweramp, combined with the modeling tech from Line 6. An iteration given the advancements in technology would make for a nice release today.

Since getting my Helix about 3 years ago I've stopped using my tube amps. I go back to them everyone once in a while but more for nostalgia than anything else. I'm always happy to return to my Helix. There was a bit of a learning curve with it but I have the hang of it now and it is awesome.

I picked up a few Line 6 amps and modelers in the last few years and I really enjoy messing and tweaking with all the different amp models through different cabs and speakers! They all sound great. However, when recording, it just doesn’t cut through and sometimes just sounds muddy through the mix. When using one of these rigs live it didn’t cut through very well all the time either.
But I wouldn’t get rid of my Line 6 gear it’s a lot of fun and it does sound great for practice and messing around.

Love that Balaguer! That's a sub from me :) I love my HX stomp too, one of the best units to add to the collection i've bought. Super useful tool.
Shocked one of my long time jam buddies who's a bit of tube purist type... (i love both) he came over once while i was playing up loud, it looked like i was playing my tube head as it was still on from previously, and he was like "wow man, you got that dialed! that sounded absolutely killer!"... should have seen his face when i turned it off and he realized it was the rockerverb model in the stomp the whole time haha. He's been slightly assimilated into the borg now, which is kind of nice.

You just showed me an application I've never tried. I usually run the Helix through my Invective as a giant effects pedal board, and utilize the midi commands to get all the parameters out of the amp. I also use the Helix via USB, to record straight to my DAW...but it never occurred to me to run it into the return of the loop..definitely a new (to me), concept. I will have to start trying that method out. Great vid bro!

In my band, we use 3 helixes and they handle everything we need for anything we could ever want in our live gigs, except pour me a beer (although the rack they live in does have a retractable cozy). Everything from midi patch changes, automating reverb swells for the vocal mics, to splitting the bass into a sub track and distortion track (like I would do while mixing a record), and we still feel like we are under-utilizing it lol.

I have been messing with the Helix for some time now and found the best way to run it is exactly what you are doing in this video...using tube power (return loop) and a real cabinet. The next best way (and more convenient) is to use the Seymour Duncan 170 solid state power amp into a real cabinet, its not as responsive as a real tube amp but its not bad, you have to use the EQ on the SD170 for more fine tuning. I am not a fan of powered FRFR speakers and dealing with IRs and Cab blocks, I have a Headrush 108 but prefer not to use it.

Build a monster modded JCM800 - throw in KT88s and what not. The only downside is, you get lost too far into all these experimentations and tweaking instead of playing. That's where I love having my amps, just plug in the guitar and let it rip!

In your opinion, can you get close to the sound of the original amp you are modeling even when using the power amp of the Mezzabarba? If there is one thing I have learned in over three decades of playing guitar it's that I'm too stupid for a rig like this. I can barely stand to use my bare bones pedal board. In fact, I don't even like using a reverb pedal with my amp. All I've ever wanted to do is plug into one basic amp with good tone and play.
But, I do get the appeal of having hundreds of good tone instantly accessible. Even if it's not my jam.

Second, I think I need something like this and need to work around using it since tube amps are getting closer to their demise. If only a certain three-letter agency didn’t ban the domestic production of incandescent bulbs…

Sorry if you addressed this in the video: didn’t have time to watch the entire thing. That said, I scrubbed through and noticed you were using the Amp models and not the Preamp models in the Helix. From my understanding if you are using an actual tube power amp + cab you should stick with the Preamp models otherwise you’re “coloring the sound” twice, so to speak, with two power amps. Maybe I’m wrong, but it definitely changes the sound when I toggle between the two with my HX Stomp and 2555x FX Return.

      @@curtmetallic188
I'll do what I can to help on this one.
Tube amps have a preamp section that makes most of your tonal flavors such as distortion and whatnot. The power amp then amplifies that kind of weak tonal signal into something with more loud potential once it gets pushed into a speaker. Power amps can and do impart some tonal characteristics onto the preamp signal which is sort of where you hear guys talking about headroom/breakup and the difference in tone between different sets of power tubes (EL34s/6L6s/KT88s or their smaller brethren in smaller amp heads).
In this Kyle Bull video I believe he said he is running his preamp stand-in, the Helix, into the effects return of his Mezzabarba amp, which bypasses the preamp section of the amp head and puts the signal straight into the power amp section of the head. There's more that could be said, but I'm getting sleepy. I hope I've given you some explanation that helps without making you search terms all night. If I have only complicated your life, I apologize. Also, if anyone can add information below my response to assist this fine human, I'd take that as a kindness. I've only been back in the guitar game for a year now and had no previous tube amp experience. It was just me, a Crate practice amp, the cheapest Ibanez around, and a Digitech RP200 for high speed operations back then.
