For my final project/paper I am writing about effective strategies for teaching ESL. I really enjoyed your video and all of the great information provided. Effective communication is important in teaching and connecting with students. Using hand signals and other forms of communication to enhance speaking can be especially helpful for students who come from cultures that are expressive or that may use their hands to help determine what words are being said. I also find the idea of group work and interacting with fellow students and educators as effective. Peer work can encourage dialogue and discussion about what is being learned and help facilitate understanding from different perspectives. Using more than one strategy is definitely important in keeping students motivated and engaged in lessons. Something that has played a larger role in education in recent years is technology. How do you think technology can be used as an effective strategy to teach ESL?

3:50 Poor way to title that slide, BICS and CALP should be switched. The way the acronyms are arranged make it seem as if BICS is for content language and CALP is for social language. This is very confusing and should be addressed. Otherwise, a very informative video. Thank you.
The issue is funding for classroom support. It’s impossible for a teacher to be effective with 35 students let alone 15 on level and 20 ELL. No amount of PD or PowerPoints sent out will be enough for a teacher alone to be effective for ALL students in a classroom. Every classroom should have 2 or 3 teachers. ELL need to have small group more often until program exit. Otherwise we’re just throwing everyone in a general Ed class room and patting ourselves on the back for mainstreaming kids with everyone else

One teacher I saw teaching English made the boys do 5 pushups and the girls do 10 jumping jacks if they forgot something from the day before. Since, Thailand has a no fail system, he wanted the students to have some skin in the game and if they don't want to learn, at least they will be strong for physically demanding jobs when they enter the workforce. ;p
I wish I could have been able to show this to my peers. However, the generalization of "well behaved" doesn't apply to our school. Some of the hardest discipline issues involved EL students.
Great video. May suggest two themes? i'd suggest "teaching adults" known as andragogia and teaching EFL as it is very different than ESL. For example, I teach english in Brasil, so all my students speak portuguese and have the same cultural background.
