Reminds me of my childhood in the 1450s when there were always buskers at Tyburn gallows entertaining the crowds before a nice execution. We'd buy a bag of roast chestnuts and put them in our pockets to keep our hands warm while we waited for the hangman. You'd never recognise the place today and the hurdy-gurdy man has long since gone.

I always imagine that the trompette came from someone who's gurdy bridge broke, and it started buzzing. People liked it once they realized it could be controlled, and then it turned into part of the technique. It seems like a serendipitous thing.

The trompette is the string that passes over the "dog" (chien), causing it to vibrate. And your grip on that handle is wrong. Get that elbow in towards you for a start, and relax the arm. For the grip itself: ruclips.net/video/OOBfNPEi9l0/видео.html

The Ugears hurdy gurdy kit has laser cut pieces that interlock together to make a functional, although somewhat thin sounding, instrument that can be played.
How well it can be played is open to debate, but it makes somewhat appropriate noises for under $100.
