  • Toccata in G by Dubois played by Richard McVeigh on what was the final recital given on the infamous Hauptwerk laptop! This was prior to the dedicated workstation which is now used, and this recital really pushed the limits of the laptop to its maximum capacity!!
Played on the epic of St Laurenskerk in Rotterdam, prepared for Hauptwerk by Sonus Paradisi.

There feels to be nothing separating the notes on the page from the sounds in the air. His technique is invisible. Not a nanosecond of hesitation or indirection. Which is all to say, Wonderful!

Your performance of this piece is my go to interpretation. It is the best rendition on RUclips in my opinion, the speed, articulation, and registration. And you execute it perfectly, almost flawless.

Your choice of tempo is phenomenal - especially considering the large acoustic - but as your articulation and staccato playing is so wonderfully precise and crisp . . . you 'pull it off' without the toccata sounding rushed - but your performance certainly makes it sound really exciting! BRAVO. A masterful interpretation. (I would be fascinated to know if you could play it at the same tempo on the Caen sample set . . . and even more intrigued to know if the action of the real Cavaille-Coll organ would be able to cope with such a vigorous performance!)

Thanks Graham! Considering the metronome marking in the score is crotchet = 112, this is a rather stately performance 😉
Thanks for your emails by the way. Safely received your submissions look wonderful 😊

@@beautyinsound Your tempo is perfection - I just wish I was more like your 'Ferrari' performance rather than my somewhat sedate 'Ford Fiesta' chug-along when I play the piece for pleasure! I never fail to be amused at how the 'speed' at which a particular French toccata should be played can get organists so very aerated! Tempo can be problematic as there are many factors to consider in addition to metronome markings - all of which you already know - but in the end, it's surely a question of musicality and whether the tempo chosen really does the music justice. And this is where you are always absolutely on safe ground as all your performance are musicality personified, and you always do full justice to the music you play. I am certain Dubois would fully approve this rendition: "Mais oui! Mais oui! Tout simplement superbe!"
Thank you for looking at my 'submissions'. I heard you comment recently you have been inundated (a lot of 'loud' organ music!). I'm just grateful you have looked at my music and I was thrilled with your remark about my 'Trumpet Tune' that Jerry recorded. I do not envy you having to select what will make the grade for your December recital programme . . . but I'm sure the final choice will be fair and balanced and will be what your many loyal followers will be most delighted to hear you play. And your tempos will be perfect, too!

Differences or not, Richard, this was a phenomenal performance! Even, as you note, with many features at less than optimal, the Rotterdam sample set is simply the best available!

The musical skill with which you play is fantastic! The older computer does not produce the same level of sound clarity as your new computers. The tempo and the staccato as also fantastic! Thank you!

Wow. This is indeed a brisk performance :) and perfect! Well done. It is interesting to note how far you have come. Much as I love this recording, it does indeed lack a little “something” in 16-bit. But we should also mention how your skill as an editor and videographer continue to mature. You truly are blazing a trail and so thrilled to follow along!!! Bravo!!! Onward ☺️

Hi there Richard - I really have enjoyed this piece - and a big thank you so much for your wonderful playing during these strange times. You are a real inspiration and a brilliant organist . I am going to listen again and turn up the volume to full. What's the chance of a full rendition of Rhosymedre which you teasingly played out with please? Big applause from Lancashire.

Now that's how I like to play this! When I was young and learning the piano I'd turbo through the Clementi sonatinas like that and this piece begs for the same treatment lol.

An uneducated comment - but following G.Twist's comment below - even with the realism from HW's samplings - I wonder whether the piece was ever played at that tempo in the location that it was written for??
It really is a wonderful gallop and Richard is to be congratulated for his fantastic dexterity (and whatever terms allpy to his foot work...)

I like the tempo. I have just been practising the piece and this tempo or one just a tiny bit slower seems to fit a piece composed for large cathedrals. Some performancves are too fast. In my 80s of course perhaps I'm slowing down too...

Not so bad at all considering it was your poor, perspiring laptop. As Dr. Johnson (I think) said once, "...like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."
