What a writer's dream to create a character that lives forever! And no matter how many different interpreters have attempted the role the essential Holmes always shines through.A brilliant creation.
Aside from all of these episodes, I love the scenery. I wish I could retire there....just find a little house for rent in the middle of nowhere like this. It's beautiful.
You’d get bombarded with visitors constantly if you had your dream cottage and they’d stay and eat all your food and leave you with the mess of washing sheets towels etc.
Whenever the Jeremy Brett Holmes' chose to expand upon the original canonical stories, they managed to do so with talent and respect. Herein we have a prime example.
If I remember, he'd spent something like three months on a case hardly eating or sleeping, and nearly killed himself doing it. So Watson went into doctor mode and took him on a 'health holiday'. :)
David Burke and Edward Hardwicke appear to me , to be one of the same . Their mannerisms , gestures , looks , character , stance , gait , voice patterns etc . Their differences appear indiscernible to myself . I can't tell 'em apart .
I think David Burke brings a quality of comedic relief to the otherwise serious business of crime and criminality. Edward Hardwicke on the other hand comes across as more serious and suits the role of a perfect army doctor.
I saw the stage play with Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke at Theatre Royal Bath in 1989 or might have been 1990. It was amazing, felt like I was seeing end if an era.
@'5.23 When he produces the Parish magazine . With a flourish of course ! And his laughter - and the sequence of facial expressions ? It's just beyond acting...
This serial is based on the original books which featured Holmes, as opium (heroin) addict and the doctor is called in to treat Sherlock Holmes by his brother, Mycroft, for his addiction. ( both have been left out in the anti-drug version)
Love love love the old Sherlock Holmes. Thank you. Do you think you could get the old British show the avengers with John steed and Emma peel? Thank you. I'm new to this stuff so I apologize if I did wrong.
He went on vacation to kick the speed balls of heroin with a 7% mixture of cocaine . When he found out the devils foot would make you trip like the effects of DMT he said , " Oh let's try some ". Hahahahahah Sherlock and I have alot in common lol.
To my knowledge, I think that this is the only adaptation that did this. He kicked the habit in this TV version due to the show getting more child viewers.
Cocaine is an inextricable part of the character of Sherlock Holmes! I very much doubt whether young people would start injecting themselves with cocaine if they saw Jeremy Brett apparently doing so. And I doubt even more that children would start doing the same as well! There is far too much nannying going on in the anglophone world - not to mention political correctness (alias gross hypocrisy) and of course the Twin Gods of Health and Safety. Quite nauseating.
@@mfjdv2020That drug use is part of his character makes complete sense. He's self-medicating. I'm autistic and stand by the idea that Sherlock is neurodivergent... it's likely the professor Sir ACD borrowed traits from to imbue in Holmes was autistic. Many autistic / neurodivergent individuals (esp those that are undiagnosed) self medicate with cocaine...among other things

Anything is better than suburbia
I’m watching this whilst on holiday staying near Poldhu beach

😂i live in the middle of nowhere in Ireland and am dying to get out 😂😂
wonderful. And hearing the violin introductions is like snuggling into the warmest cosiest comfort blanket imaginable.

"Oh Watson you are coming along marvellously!" 😆

Yes I feel they are both excellent in the Dr. Watson role. Equally enjoyable.

This one might be my favorite of the whole series. All of which I have watched dozens of times over the years.

The one series I can go to to see remarkable acting
three left handed gardeners disliked this
Reminds me of the episode of Poirot where Hastings convinces a very reluctant Hercule to go on vacation...for his health.

No more Emna Peel :(
Have you tried The Saint ?

Sherlock and I have alot in common lol.
He demands constant distractions, just like me
He's autistic like me.
What kind of shoe can you get on The Devil's Foot ?
This is the one where he kicks his habit?
i read this book it was good
Is it better than the film?
And Holmes looks like my grand aunt Lisbeth !!!!!!
She was a handsome woman.
Anyone in 2024
I wonder, if Jeremy, was considering his life while filming there , Cornwall is a strange meloncoly place,
Wait, why was Sherlock ill in this episode?
7% solution of cocain... Elementary!
Because of stress mainly
Nice of him to bury used needles on a public beach!
To my knowledge, I think that this is the only adaptation that did this. He kicked the habit in this TV version due to the show getting more child viewers.
He didn't really throw them away on the beach ... it's probably a backdrop :-)

i mean, was he seriously ill? or just a cold?
He was on the verge of collapse, so yes, he was seriously ill!
@@mfjdv2020 Jeremy Brett was actually I'll at the time
Burnout and lack of self care induced illness.... Ugh I've been there
