This least played of Rachmaninoff's works for piano and orchestra is the equal of the others, and is the most interesting, mysterious, and profound of them all. The finale is the most hair-raising of any piano concerto ever composed. The work was a favorite of Robert Mitchum. I have a studio publicity photo of him, circa late 1940's-early 1950's, taken in his den, of him holding his 78 r.p.m. album of this work as he is perusing the liner notes. This was when virtually nobody was playing it, especially Vladimir Horowitz (of all people), who NEVER PLAYED IT!!!
What a stunning performance! Bravo!
