I love the exercise, but I wish there was a little more knowledge/research about expansion drafts going into this… 1. You were corrected mid-show about the 2004 draft, but there was also the 1995 expansion draft (Raptors and Grizzlies) that happened since the Timberwolves joined the league in 1989. 2. Each team could only pick one player from a team’s pool of unprotected players. 3. Upcoming free agents were not included in the draftable or protectable pools. I don’t remember how option years were treated though. Those are just a couple things that I wanted to point out. Love the show!
Loren Woods! Main reason I went to U of A. Minneapolis Final Four - 2001. Also, I think the Bob who you talked about that started the Charlotte Bobcats was the co-founder of BET... could be wrong on that though.
I have lived in Oregon for 23 years. But, I lived west of Seattle, 2 different times, for 14 1/2 years beforehand. I am loyal to the Seattle teams first: the Huskies; the Seahawks; the Sonics; the Kraken; the Sounders; and the Mariners. Then the rest of the Washington teams: Gonzaga; Wazzu; Seattle U; and E Washington. I really hope the Sonics comeback!!!!
I am curious I think in that nhl expansion there was some level of protection for young players maybe those on a rookie deal are auto protected… its just hard to give up spots for guys you have never even seen play in an nba game yet.
You can protect 8 I'd go with ant, jaden, kat, rudy, naz, dillingham, conley, naw if he's still under contract if not then I'd just protect Shannon Jr honestly don't even think anyone else would even be taken since none have done anything and weren't highly coveted prospects
@@KrustyKrabPizza22 idk, i seemed to be right when i said we needed a defensive center 5 years ago. Now that Rudy is older, and he has helped develop the defensive mindset in our younger guys, and Garza did surprise me last year when called upon in big games during injuries, considering i was super skeptical of his defensive side of the ball prior to then. If Rudy wants to elect to restructure an extension down to 20 million a year from ages 32-36, i dont have a problem with that either. 50mil for a defensive only big, with atrocious hands and nearly 0 offensive ability, is starting to show that its too expensive, even for an aging defensive team juggernaut player. imo
Here is to hoping... need to protect 8 players or else is really could screw up some teams, Wolves being one... that'd be another nail in the coffin for us Wolves fans to lose a good player for nothing and bad timing 🤣 ORRRR... if they want a protected player, it'll cost them something and whether the other team will agree.
Can expansion teams accept draft pics for agreeing to NOT take a player in the draft? Also, are expansion teams able to trade a drafted player immediately or are they required to keep them on their roster a set amount of time?
Terrence Shannon Jr needs to be protected, Phil, Terrence Shannon Jr is better than Rudy Gobert... I do not believe that Rudy is the third best player on this team I think that you can put McDaniels and Reid into that conversation... Dillingham and Shannon Jr are going to creep into the top five too... Maybe Rudy is finding his way out...
@tkuebler9561 if Rudy gone could possibly resign him and Naz I think. I think the future of the team is Ant playing the 1/2. He already handles the ball so much I think Naw,Ant,Jaden,NazKat. Is a lineup that could compete with anyone.
@@WheresWaldo05 I don't think you watch timberwolves games if you think Dilly gonna be more valuable to the team next year than naw was last year. It's not easy to get 3 and d role players it's easy to find undersized inefficient scorers.
@@THENOCAPO Expansion draft!!!! Naw multiple yesrs from now IF still on the team, will most likely be LESS valuable than Dillingham. Looks like soneone did not pay attention to the exercise of the video. Also he Dillingham is FAR more efficient coming out of college than Ant was. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Allow Gobert to be exposed. The expansion team won't take him given his age and contract. Essentially allowing us to protect 7 players. Ant Dilly Shannon Jr. Kat Jaden Naz Gobert by virtue
Gonna be more 8 or 9 protected. Besided that there will be more talent available in that expansion draft than ever before. Teams will look to unload contracts and get themself realigned with the new salary cap rules. Gonna be a bunch of teams looking to reset or dump talented players that a team with no money tied up will have their pick of the litter. These next expansion teams will be more competitive from the start. These teams are going to come in trying to win why would you try to lose so you can sour your fanbase off top. Wouldnt be new teams for 3-4 years so the Rudy conversation doesnt matter.
Cmon Kyle 1989 was the last expansion draft? So when the Raptors and Grizzlies came in the year KG was drafted how did they field a team? I dont mind your guys current Twolves content but you guys are not qualified to do top 100 Twolves lists. Im 43 and I know all the players you guys have a hard time pronouncing their names. I already commented before you guys do not know Brad Lohaus from Randy Bruer and you've proven my point. I remember all the hopeful draft picks like Marlon Maxey and Gerald Glass. How do you rank guys that were fan favorites when you didnt know they ever existed? Theyve been around 35 years the league hasnt changed all that much Bird and Magic were almost retired for God's sake. Did you assume the Bobcats just picked up every top free agent one year when they actually had free agents yet have been terrible ever since? Mackey knows nothing about Tyrone Corbin or Pooh Richardson. He's heard people talk about them and seen numbers. Pooh was traded after his 3rd season for Michael Williams a player that started for 3-4 years for the Wolves and owned the NBA record for consecutive free throws made for years and Mackey doesn't remember him so how does he remember the guy traded years prior? You don't have to lie to kick it. Just keep it 100.
They cant take 6 players from one team. They can only take 2-3 max and you protect one after they pick one each time. You guys act like teams wouldnt have all kinds of guys out there like Brandon Ingram and those type of players. Hell maybe Atlanta cuts ties with Trae Young for whatever reasons. You guys are underestimating how much teams will use this to reset their rosters to move in a more cap friendly direction to remain competitive for years. Teams wouldnt even come until probably 2028. This needs to be a conversation about FUTURE not current. Rudy and Conley are done at that point. Do more research on how it would actually be done instead of these what if takes.
Joe Smith was ACC Maryland dude. Alabama dude. Wolf of the week is painful. Spent way too much time on games played. Sprewell has all kinds of stats you could have talked about. Spend time doing more research for clues wtf is that? Googs played in ACC. Person played with Chris Mills after Barkley left. No knowledge of college or pros from Mackey wtf is your job?
Expansion team can only take 1 player from each NBA team. NBA teams protect 8 players.
88' Miami and Charlotte
89' Minnesota and Orlando
95' Toronto and Vancouver
04' Charlotte Bobcats

This was my issue with the ep too. 8 protected, 14 players to be selected, max 1 player per team. Also, RFAs were allowed to be picked as well.
nice info

Any expansion draft year, the lottery odds should change so expansion team gets a 50% of the #1 pick. Pick 2 at 30%. Pick 3 at 20%.
Good idea. I’d like to have an exercise about the ramifications of guaranteeing a top 3 pick
Rick Mahorn was the first pick and the first Bad touch the Wolves had.
Kyle knocked it out of the park, that's exactly who I would protect, that's all we need to protect, thank goodness!
New protect everybody except Rudy. Nobody’s gonna take that contract and then you know you’ll still have him😊
I would love to be the GM of a new expansion team. It would be like building a team from scratch in NBA2K.
Best Wolf name suggestion: Mickaël Gelabale

Id dangle rudy, to get off his contract, and go full offense mode with Naz and Garza with Kat. free flowing offense from top to bottom.
