This has always been my #1 fever dream-esque fear. The thought of a massive hollywood style wave crashing and encompassing a city everyone in it and all the metal of the buildings slashing around in darkness is very disturbing along with no telling what the depth of the oceans might throw in.
In oceanography, rogue waves are more precisely defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height (Hs or SWH), which is itself defined as the mean of the largest third of waves in a wave record.
Number three is NOT a 'rogue wave'. It was COMPLETELY forecast and the region was warned that the annual Qiantang River tidal bore would be more extreme than usual because of a Tropical cyclone that was sitting just offshore sending a storm surge into the area. Notice most people are NOT in the area with no place to retreat to. No one was killed by the wave. As a matter of fact, people come from all over the world to surf the wave, which ALWAYS shows up in early September. It is on my wish list to see.
Hangzhou, China. While the largest tidal bore (wave) occurs once a year in early autumn, the wave shaped up quite often on the incoming tides in September and October. Hangzhou is south of Nanjing, and SW of Shanghai. So just think south of Shanghai on the coast and you will be close. The shape of the bay concentrates the incoming tide and kind of (this is not very scientific) forces the tide surge to 'stack up' over here water coming out of he Qiantang river. Classic!
I remember being in the water when one of these rogue waves hit when I was on vacation. Fortunately I was on the outside, so I could duck under it. Gosh, it was scary, about 15' tall, being only 11 when it happened with no board on me.
See it every day at the beach. A rogue wave is out in the ocean where waves are already massive and occasionally two wave sets combine. The result is a wave up to 100' or more out of sync with the swell. It can also flow along the swell valleys too. And I know because I was in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. If they don't break you have a chance. In our case we were in the valley in front of it and it broke over the top of us. Everything above deck was swepped away, mast, rigging, sat, both wheels, liferafts...everything. We set off the epirb. The yacht was not sinking. We were rescued two days later by a Navy Frigate.
Loss of lives in that race. We used to see them going pass Tathra out in the ocean and Tathra gets huge freak waves. So stay safe mate if ur doing that again.
Actually no. A rogue wave is not just two wave forms adding their heights to each other for a moment. It is more rare and unique than that. Technically it owes it's existence to quantum mechanics. Newtownian physics says they can't exist. Which is why for 500 years physicists and mariners were at odds with each other. It is literally the self focusing (strange but true, but not as strange as a cat that alive and dead) creation of a wave from a process that is not well understood, even by physicists who are still learning about it. But satellite LIDAR is proving that they exist and are more common than was thought. Though you could probably still go to the beach every day of your life and never notice one. By definition a rogue wave is at least twice the significant wave height, which is the average of the biggest 1/3. So pretty much at least twice the biggest waves.
Samantha Judge, Stephen A is correct and it isn't that complicated. Rogue waves form when the energy of multiple waves combine as the wave reaches it's peak. It's usually far off storms that cause higher frequency waves moving in a different direction than the normal swell of a particular location. When the energy of two waves combines at the right time it creates a sudden massive wave.
David Kutassy What you described is still a linear process, and therefore not what scientists define as a rogue wave. If it wasn't that complicated, it wouldn't have been debated by scientists for centuries.
thought you were surely referring to the guy with the gf stressing out. that guy at 1.38 is what we call natural selection. surely he survived, I think he just received a deserved fence crushing.

I would have tapped that man shout its "okay it's okay relax relax", like, let me be surprised na! Its not like the woman was panicking in any kinda unnatural way with cause for any concerns, she was simply fascinated and concerned (being human)!!!
A rogue wave is a natural ocean phenomenon that is not caused by land movement. Rogue waves only lasts briefly, they only occur in a limited locations and most often happens far out at sea.
#3 is why tsunami is so much worse in narrow bays. The front runs into ever narowing end, runs up and then piles up backwards, flooding whatever it missed on the first go.
I would've just died from a heart attack, like how are these people so calm like this happens all the the time like its just a normal thing, its not normal is terrifying
A snady rogue wave hits a car. A bigger sandy one hits a truck, car in cab view and a honda accord. A huge muddy wave hits a beach pier. On Cabo Sagres, the coast spawns 55 foot wave ever found hitting a sandy mountain.
If you don't know what a rouge wave is, you should probably avoid making videos on them. 1st principal you need to learn is that rogue wave has never made it to land to the best of our knowledge as they would collapse due to the friction of the ocean floor among other things; this alone discredits all 'your' clips
