Believe me I hated to do it but since it’s really just sign material it’s easily removed if somebody wants to attempt to fix that mess under it eventually 😎
Holy cow that paint came out great. I always think that after watching your videos that I'll be able to tackle my project. Then I remember who I'm dealing with when it comes to painting....me. Another great video. Thanks for doing this series.
Thank you so much for this series, I have a 1972 Williams Super Star I inherited that could use a bit of maintenance, and you covered so much of the little things to do to keep similar Williams EMs in shape.
Nice job!!! Whenever I have wear under pop bumpers , I remove the entire assembly and scan the artwork underneath Then I take it into photoshop and touch it up After that, I send it to my Silhouette Vinyl cutter and have it cut out Stick them on the playfield and it looks like new. And no brush marks!!!
Hi Joe I’ve only did this for my own machines Never gave any thought of turning it into a business The next time you have a machine that needs them, you can send me the scan and I’ll make you one to see what you think of it. It will have to be a scan, not a photo It has to be the exact size
If I’m doing a large area of the playfield and have enough room I use a flatbed scanner If there is not enough room I use a Flip Pal hand held scanner. Works great
Looks good as always didn’t think the new pop bumpers would look good till I saw em and it looks tons better than the junk they did not perfect but the game is almost 45 years old its never gonna be factory new ever unless u never intend to play it then why have it in the first place. You did good with it for the wear it had someone’s gonna be lucky to have this machine to enjoy
It is sort of a shame the mylar was necessary, but as you and DeadKoby point out, the return on investment isn't worth the headache of having to repaint the artwork under the mylar. You just can't remove the mylar from a machine that old without damage. I used to work at one of the local arcades, and watched as the owner tried to remove the mylar from a machine he was restoring. The exasperated look on his face when he peeled off a huge piece of the artwork would've been worth the price of admission. At least he couldn't blame me for it. xD In the end, the opaque mylar covers the dirt and the wear and it doesn't affect the gameplay, so it's all good. I'm with you, though... seriously, who puts that stuff on a machine and doesn't even at least try to clean the playfield first, so all that dirt is trapped under the mylar? I'm an optimist, so I'm going to assume the more charitable interpretation, that they just didn't think it all the way through, as opposed to just being lazy.
When you can't risk wearing through any paint, you should give clay bar a try. It's what detailers use to remove contamination from car paint. If you're not worried about paint thickness then the magic eraser is still the quickest and has the added benefit of smoothing out the surface.
Gonna paint my car with Razzle Berry, will be a lot easier to retouch every time it gets a new scratch! 😂 I agree that the black mylar was the best solution, it's sad that the previous owner took the regrettable decision of putting the clear mylar without even cleaning the area first!
I think you do an amazing job there bud but I kind of think I would have gone me personally with yellow around the pot bumpers for the mylar covering the black just kind of makes it look like a big spot now that was kind of wait until you got the tops on the pot bumpers but like you said it is what it is it's not bad I just would have done something to break up all that black down there.... Cool looking forward to the next video
After watching yesterday's video, I was hoping you were going to try to, matt down the mylar a tad and paint the bad bits over the mylar and then clear coat it. Thus locking it in.
That would work but I didn’t really want to do all that on the mylar because I believe it would flake off pretty easily but it might’ve held up I don’t know
@@LyonsArcade I wasn't sure either matting down the mylar will help the Acrylic stick but it may still peel off irrespective of the clear coat. The other way I considered was matting and painting the mylar underneath and then placing another clear mylar ring on top to lock it in. Perhaps something to try if you come across the problem again, or where a section of playfield has mylar over bad paint...as long as it doesn't create too bad a ridge.
If you paint it with acrylic paints they are water based, so the problem you'll run into is the paint will just rub right off if it gets wet, or even if there's too much humidity, etc. If you paint it with oil based paints you don't have to clear it, but they can't be easily cleaned up if you paint it the wrong color, etc. You could try a spot then wax it and see if the wax takes the paint off, it may....
Thanks for the great tutorial. I have a Pat Hand in rough playing board shape but mechanically works great. I plan to keep it and needs about 5x the touchup you did but still going to try. Can you elaborate on what clearcoat you used? Also, how did you clearcoat around or over? the bonus lights? You didn't show the clear coating so not sure how to do or make sure it blends with the surrounding areas? Also, the lower "clear" region on mine has some wear through the is flaking more and more as it wears. Is there a way to do that clear? Thanks for any further advice! Great Video!
I'm sure you've tried this before, but I have had great success dissolving glue with isopropyl alcohol. I wonder if this might make removing the Mylar easier. Maybe soaking a rag in IPA then putting it over the Mylar to let it soak.
Hey Ron! - Why did the "mysterious foresight" music come in at 45:37? Did something happen? Or did you just run out of royalty free music tracks?! :) Can't wait to see how this baby plays! - Regarding the missing bell: Could that be whatever that piece of metal was that you found in the cabinet?
I have this game and that belonged to an old friend and that I played when I was a kid. The lucite pieces at the top of the game are both broken. Is there a way to replace them easily or do you sell them? Thanks. Great tutorial series.
@@LyonsArcade Watched the whole video. Good job patching up the playfield. Just wait till one day I have to mix different kind of colors paint to get the 'correct color' I need. I would ruin the whole thing, then do it everywhere and call it a 'redesigned playfield'. (Picasso became famous with his ugly paintings, right ?)
It's all the free stuff at www.BenSound.com it doesn't cost anything to use it you just have to give him credit. That one with the drums is probably "Downtown" there's another good one called "All That" with good drums.
If you put mylar on top of mylar wouldn't that affect gameplay? Oh well. you're the professional it's all on your Decision making process on making that pinball machine look great.
Why don't you airbursh? It would blend better and no brush stokes. Sand the ball line and clear coat the entire board. Plus, it would protect the remaining paint.
I think its also good "marketing" to touch up the machine like you do. Its good for your brandname when other people see how awesome machines from your company look. I think $1300 is a bargain for the awesome job you did! Thr machine is like new when youre done.
I'm one of those guys that's mildly annoyed that you didn't try to remove the mylar... But the cost/work/return on investment is likely way out of balance doing that. Something tells me that the market for a mint Pat Hand isn't strong enough to warrant it. No hate from me.
Everybody thinks it's easy, because they've done it on more high end machines, it's nearly impossible to do on a machine that the playfield has planked and alligatored like this one, you'd end up with a big white ring where the paint came off.
@@LyonsArcade Right... so even if you did remove it with heat, and razors, and were oh so careful.... you'd still be recreating all the art work on bare wood. That sounds FUN....NOT.
Mr ross would be proud of your painting. Maybe you could try to adjust colours with primary colours . So you do not need to order 2543 different bottles😋 but hey if it works no comments on your workflow
You run into trouble when you have to go more muted or intense so the different colors make that easier... so I have full greens bright greens, etc that push it one way or another plus sometimes they match right out of the bottle!
I remember, I had fun on our trip to Michael's 🎨👨🎨🖌️
Now I can’t go in there without wearing a spacesuit
The black around the pops looks better than I expected it to when you first mentioned it. Glad you went for the black and not any of the others :)
