    Pioneers! William Dufty, Gloria Swanson, and Dick Gregory really opened the path to eating whole foods. If you want a good introduction to Dufty's transformation, read "You Are All Sanpaku," his introduction is gold.

    My mom read this book when it came out. We never had processed sugar in the house growing up. We were some darn healthy kids! As an adult I get into the processed sugar kick now and then. I really notice a difference in my mood when I stop eating it. I feel so much better, even affecting my mood.

    Alan! You make my day every time you post something with Gloria Swanson, I didnt even know of this existence. I am so pleased because one of my main interests in Miss Swanson is her healthy eating habits, and this is a superb discussion. Thank you once again!

    Amazing! I'm so impressed something like this was on television. Such smart, thoughtful conversation. But, I must say, that's 1977 and here we are in 2018 and the topics of conversation are primarily the same. Sometimes I think we haven't come very far at all.

      Sadly in 2021 this would not be discussed now on TV as almost every topic is censored. I found this video riveting.

      It was a good thing. It just needs to be done on a grander scale. Most people try to live that regardless. It’s human innate nature.

    Dick Gregory wrote a book about healthy eating in the 70's, which I enjoyed reading. I don't remember the name of it. He recounts how, during the civil rights movement a woman gave him salad to eat, which he did not like. That encounter got him on the road to healthy eating and he lost a lot of weight too.

    Great video.. You get to learn a lot about 1977, the language, things they consider important, and something to compare - it's great history. Dick Gregory is a very interesting person, which is how I found it. I was searching for him, and now I see the actress who played "Norma Desmond"
    I can't imagine people in Hollywood today talking like this.

    Amaaaaazing! I had no idea Gloria Swanson was involved with health and nutrition. I was searching for the author of Sugar Blues and thought the result was wrong when it showed Gloria Swanson. This whole table full of people were way ahead of their time. Beechnut baby food is still going strong - I have huge respect for the president of that company. Its sad that even though people were talking about diet over medicine even back then that things have gotten worse. Gloria must be turning in her grave.

      Yes that book changed my life when I came out. For 10 years I avoided sugar. Today, the foods are full of all kinds of additives.

  • @citizen1163
    @citizen1163 8 лет назад +4

    I was aware of food additive problems back in early 70s. Dr Richard MacKarness (spell?) at Park Prewitt Psychiatric Hospital, Basingstoke, UK, did experiments with patients whereby he detoxed them for a week I think, just feeding them lamb and pears (back then those 2 foods were the ones which caused fewest allergies). He dropped a mix of white flour and water onto a patient's tongue and an immediate bad reaction happened. I phoned him once and he asked if I was with a magazine. When I told him I was just an interested 'civilian' he refused to speak. Govts & Corporates have known how bad these processed foods are for decades but care LESS. Profits first! Here we are, 40 odd years further down the line and STILL too many people ignorant of facts. Thanks, education system, (mainly government run...surprise! NOT).

      I believe he had his child too. He ruined her life - he took over her finances promising to make her millions, and bled her dry instead - He even bought her extravagant gifts _WITH HER OWN MONEY,_ and she had no idea.

    I bought Beechnut baby food. Sometimes I would put a spoon of homemade plain yogurt in it. Can't make yogurt at home anymore, the antibiotics residue will prevent the milk from solidifying.

    Oh God. Sometimes a delicious piece of cake or bakery pastry is so delicious but often packaged bread or cheap commercial baked goods have that sickening sweet taste. Everything in moderation I guess but I am interested in not eating sugar for a while.
