Pioneers! William Dufty, Gloria Swanson, and Dick Gregory really opened the path to eating whole foods. If you want a good introduction to Dufty's transformation, read "You Are All Sanpaku," his introduction is gold.
Finally good conversation between open minded folks speaking softly letting each other have their say n Gloria is a real classy women ! Wish I'd had a friend like her What a delight!
My mom read this book when it came out. We never had processed sugar in the house growing up. We were some darn healthy kids! As an adult I get into the processed sugar kick now and then. I really notice a difference in my mood when I stop eating it. I feel so much better, even affecting my mood.
Alan! You make my day every time you post something with Gloria Swanson, I didnt even know of this existence. I am so pleased because one of my main interests in Miss Swanson is her healthy eating habits, and this is a superb discussion. Thank you once again!
Amazing! I'm so impressed something like this was on television. Such smart, thoughtful conversation. But, I must say, that's 1977 and here we are in 2018 and the topics of conversation are primarily the same. Sometimes I think we haven't come very far at all.
I wish it had just been an interview with Dick Gregory and Gloria Swanson. The woman who was in sunset boulevard and advocated macrobiotic diets in the 50s and the man who whilefasting ran across the entire country.
Dick Gregory wrote a book about healthy eating in the 70's, which I enjoyed reading. I don't remember the name of it. He recounts how, during the civil rights movement a woman gave him salad to eat, which he did not like. That encounter got him on the road to healthy eating and he lost a lot of weight too.
Great video.. You get to learn a lot about 1977, the language, things they consider important, and something to compare - it's great history. Dick Gregory is a very interesting person, which is how I found it. I was searching for him, and now I see the actress who played "Norma Desmond" I can't imagine people in Hollywood today talking like this.
This is a beautiful thing you do to share this with us! It is not even listed on imdb! I love your station and content! I am long time lover of things vintage, and feel out of element with time at times... I feel close to the other eras more than this one iykwim?
Another interesting post. Thanks! I recently listened to Helen Hayes read her autobiography, and she talked about how pushy Gloria Swanson was about health food, which makes this even more interesting.
Haha! The rush to commercial break after this guy begins talking at 48:15 was spectacular. Total panic with him criticizing the NY Times. Love how obvious they are!
Lol! A bit later on, after they had cut to commercial break and had received a stern talking to from the producers, they went on to discuss about how the NY Times is a really fantastic newspaper all in all. 😂
Amaaaaazing! I had no idea Gloria Swanson was involved with health and nutrition. I was searching for the author of Sugar Blues and thought the result was wrong when it showed Gloria Swanson. This whole table full of people were way ahead of their time. Beechnut baby food is still going strong - I have huge respect for the president of that company. Its sad that even though people were talking about diet over medicine even back then that things have gotten worse. Gloria must be turning in her grave.
I was aware of food additive problems back in early 70s. Dr Richard MacKarness (spell?) at Park Prewitt Psychiatric Hospital, Basingstoke, UK, did experiments with patients whereby he detoxed them for a week I think, just feeding them lamb and pears (back then those 2 foods were the ones which caused fewest allergies). He dropped a mix of white flour and water onto a patient's tongue and an immediate bad reaction happened. I phoned him once and he asked if I was with a magazine. When I told him I was just an interested 'civilian' he refused to speak. Govts & Corporates have known how bad these processed foods are for decades but care LESS. Profits first! Here we are, 40 odd years further down the line and STILL too many people ignorant of facts. Thanks, education system, (mainly government run...surprise! NOT).
she had balls. this was joe Kennedy's mistress for years. she even paraded with the kennedy family on vacation! rose kennedy knew about it but she could not or would not stop it. she looks great for 78!
I believe he had his child too. He ruined her life - he took over her finances promising to make her millions, and bled her dry instead - He even bought her extravagant gifts _WITH HER OWN MONEY,_ and she had no idea.
I bought Beechnut baby food. Sometimes I would put a spoon of homemade plain yogurt in it. Can't make yogurt at home anymore, the antibiotics residue will prevent the milk from solidifying.
Of course it does. It’s because of what he started discussing. Same with how they cut to commercial when they began slandering the NY Times, and after a stern talking to during the break, they suddenly praise the newspaper. 😂
Oh God. Sometimes a delicious piece of cake or bakery pastry is so delicious but often packaged bread or cheap commercial baked goods have that sickening sweet taste. Everything in moderation I guess but I am interested in not eating sugar for a while.

I love this discussion. In 2021 everything has turned about true. Gloria Swanson was ahead of her time.RIP.
She certainly was!!

Sadly in 2021 this would not be discussed now on TV as almost every topic is censored. I found this video riveting.

It was a good thing. It just needs to be done on a grander scale. Most people try to live that regardless. It’s human innate nature.
I'm a huge fan of and highly respect Gloria Swanson. With all of her healthy eating, I was surprised to learn she died of heart disease.
I found this video years ago and it is what started my journey to plant based eating.
Thanks so much for sharing. I never saw this. What a rare gem!
her appearances on tv touting health stuff were my first exposures as a teen to this info,
bless u gloria.
and merv griffin too

That dude was promoting communism though, with the person he wrote that book about and talked ad nauseam about here.

what a treasure! Bizarre and great and eye opening
Ms. Swanson for ever beautiful.

+Mr Something what did you learn exactly?
Except for what he said about food, he’s a bad egg.
The more I see Gloria the more I like her

Would love to see more shows like this.
wow .read the book SUGAR BLUES years ago . would love it on audio
Wow! Food, politics, assassinations. Great conversation.
Would have been better had they stuck to the food bit.
thanks alan,you are amazing
So grateful for this..Thanks!

Swanson was married to Dufty and became an anti-sugar advocate, even going before congress.
Alan was this the same Duffy that co wrote the Billie Holiday book Lady Sings The Blues?
When I was a child I knew she was an old movie star and a health nut... lol
Yes that book changed my life when I came out. For 10 years I avoided sugar. Today, the foods are full of all kinds of additives.

thanks for this fascinating. but we are still have the same problems they are talking about
what a great novelty show
Why was the sound taken away after the mention “pure” Wesson oil?
Brand names MAZOLA CRISCO WESSON were all used and so some hacking that RUclips US OVERRUN WITH APPEARS TO BE DONE TO THIS VIDEO.
"Now that we have saccharine why doesn't the government take sugar off the market?" Wow! Now that is a freakishly scary suggestion!
Who said that?
Love the pink stuff. Been using it for nearly 40 yrs.
excellent info about sugar-and sugar is still a problem

By 1977, Dick Gregory already had ten kids.... which he neglected
Typical.
i dont see where the kids said he neglected them, tell us what you know
Gloria was a very intelligent woman and surprising how dick Gregory was pleasant to Everyone at that table with everyone else
After the health discussion, he was obnoxious with his propaganda.
Too bad they didn't know about the carnivore diet.
What;s ironic about this, is, Dick Gregory's sons all turned out very badly
Shocker. Lmfao.
And his daughters?
Gregory is so long winded. Good grief
He was a dumb narcissist
He’s awful. It’s a shame he was ever invited. They should have known better. I don’t believe for a second that he was “friends” with Gloria. Lol.
