  • What does'Architecture for All'mean in a city like São Paulo, the largest in Brazil? It's home to a population of 20 million, one third of whom live in the shanty towns known as favelas. An urban planner from Switzerland shows us how São Paulo is improving living conditions in the favelas and what the locals are doing to help.

Unlike Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo's favelas are far from downtown and well developed areas. Somehow I feel more confortable walking around in São Paulo than in Rio de Janeiro, although both cities are wonderful, each on its particular way.

Urban planning can certainly change the society. As a small example, when you are living in a place with extremely poor and crowded public transportation people tend to fight over each other to get in. After few decades, it becomes their nature.

Excuse me but 10% of the the people live in favelas or shanty towns. 30% of the people live in poor areas, 2/3 of the poor areas aren't favelas, but regular poor areas. European media always exagerate figures when it comes to Sao Paulo and to Brazil. I am not dreaming here, 10% of 20 illion people in the Metropolitan area is a lot of people 1.1 million.

Do you like the freestyle music back I The 1980’s of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro? They remixes the funk classics of the favelas in Rocinha. There also so any favelas in São Paulo, Brazil.I loved the 1980’s music classics.

Sim, mas é conforme eu escrevi: "no âmbito INTERNO, a paulistização da mídia nos empurra uma imagem primeiro-mundista" e "Os estrangeiros não comem essa...".

1/3 in favelas is a ridiculous number. And favela is a ridiculous name for what you are trying to show. I see you don´t know what actually the name favela means (for the ordinary brazilian). You could have used another name... Maybe very simple bad houses or comdominiums for instance. Real favelas are taken as the worst kind, and they are very, very, very far from housing 1/3 of the population.
