  • The absolute insanity of Hornby making model railway locomotives with gold plated parts. In this video I roast the concept of these 'collectors items' and especially the current Flying Scotsman limited edition gold editions. You'll also see Hornby R2215, the Princess Elizabeth LMS 4-6-2 Princess class steam locomotive limited edition for the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 up close and in detail as we check out one of these models in OO Scale and see what all the fuss is about.

Well, the time hasn't been long enough and the attrition of people not looking after them in mint condition hasn't kicked in fully but rest assured one day they will go up in value as long as you have kept them pristine, just as the absolute base level trainsets produced by the bucketload from years ago now have some not insignificant price tags attached if buying them in mint condition. It's the people who don't look after them that generate any increase in value for those that do. This is the same with all areas, look at old games cartridges produced by the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of copies. They are even for the most mass produced examples gaining value as time goes on and there becomes less and less of them physically existing and even less of them in a good state and even less in a good state and functional.
This isn't a great example hence no great pricetag. That's not to say that none of these things have turned a profit on the original purchase price it's to say that all of the prices of items are dictated by condition, then how common they are, and then how many people make up the market for them. Don't buy a bad example of something and then bemoan how it hasn't soared in value thats just silly

I've never run it, or even taken it out of the box and that's the way I intend to keep it. I don’t hate the idea of static models you are just supposed to look at. But, a static model needs to be more accurate than a working model if it is to justify its own existence. If Hornby made a true scale A1 with all of the compromises of a working model done away with, and scale accurate detail put in its place, you might have a good product. But that would require actual work and development to make a true scale model.
A regular model with gold looks stupid, and you can’t run it, so it is worse in every way.

Just if they didn't make these doesn't mean they are gonna make something else you do want. It just means they wouldn't make these, which someone else might want. Collecting isn't necessarily about items going up in value over time it's about owning the thing.
That's why they do it, for people that are not you or I, but people cannot see beyond their own motivations to own things so... they can't see why they'd do it or why anyone else would own them or want to own them.
It's a review from a warped perspective either because you can't or won't understand it's not aimed at you which is absolutely fine... the world doesn't revolve around us as individuals.

Y'know if it didn't exist, what would all the malcontents of model railways have to dunk on? It brings people joy on many fronts from the person who runs it and burns cash, to the person who owns it in perfect condition, to the person who sells it later for a profit, to the people who hate that it exists. Personally a fan of 19th century locomotives, which often had trim pieces of shiny brass, nickel, copper, and sometimes even gold leaf. One I know of had all the cab fittings and the boiler backhead nickel plated, a checkerboard tile floor, and a ship's clock and mirrors installed by its doting crew out of their own pockets.
Even then, they knew better than to try doing it to the motion and wheels like on this model, as it would wear off and/or be covered in grit, oil and grease. The rods might be painted, or just shined up, but the latter was done more to make defects like cracks easier to spot and thus prevent an accident.
Rather have a good runner no matter what it may look like, and this model was made to be a shelf queen.

The gold plating on the handrails looks quite good, but the wheels and motion look positively disgusting, tacky and naff. Gold is quite a good conductor, so I guess the electrical pick-up would be quite good for the five minutes before the plating wore away if you were to run this loco. Maybe stuff like this makes a valuable contribution to Hornby's bottom line, but given the company's finances I suspect it is more of an unnecessary distraction from what should be its core business.

    It's a curious marketing decision.
Now, an FYI: 114 years ago Lionel introduced their standard gauge #7. This was identical to the #6, however it was made of brass, or you could have nickel plated. A few short years later and the #54 came out, again a brass bodied version of the iconic #42. Ives had their legendary nickeled prosperity special.
Reason why I mention these is that none were sold or marketed as an investment.
They were sold as a premium, exclusive product, and they cost a hell of a lot of money. In the days before TV's folks bought them as a show off item, to differentiate between a toy and an adult pursuit.
Early British piddlers were finished in fine mahogany, oxidised brass and discreet greens, much as a scientific instrument.
Unfortunately this Hornby Loco isn't presenting itself as a finely crafted or upmarket purchase, like the brass bodied Lionels. This is presented as the regular product with some bling and as a supposed financial investment.
If Hornby wanted to be mature about it how about a brass Princess? That would look like a premium product.
I really don't like this loco... moreso the reasoning behind it...

    • @LocomotionMotion

    • @muir8009
      @muir8009 Месяц назад +1

@LocomotionMotion and with a brass Princess at least you could charge a bomb for it: but it would actually have value-added with its craftsmanship and quality materials.
This Hornby Princess: did you notice the valve gear? It hasn't even been assembled well; the l/s walschaerts link should be parallel to the piston rod, not doubled over like this job. The speedo housing is meant to be acute to the rear drive axle: this Princess has got it flailing around taking down small children in its wake. Minor things, but this is a supposed limited edition collectors piece. Not lard dipped in chocolate sauce and when it sits on its gold plated throne of track and annoying people like me see it and comment about walschaerts links being wrong who's fault is that? I didn't buy it as an investment property its still just a plastic Princess (albeit handsome) with gold earrings.
Interestingly the rather expensive first Hornby Princess was the splendid, but awkwardly proportioned 1937 0 model. Came in its presentation wooden box with its velvet lining, tastefully done.
You knew back in 1937 you had got your 5 quids worth. You knew you had something special.

thank you for the video. as you said, some facts just do nit meet very well like the gold plating is not done with passion, the numbers for a collectors item are to high with 5000 made, the model would have done better with more or better detailing, i.e. the seam on the boiler can be taken off by hand. As you mentioned, it will almost never run on a track but stay in the cabinet (in that vase wouldn't need the drivetrain).
i fully understand that companies need to stand out of the other producers with some unique selling point (had to look that up) and rather than earning money with hughe numbers of toytrains as in the seventies they now all address the serious model railroaders and collectors and this is something one can sell to a collector. the coloursceme is attractive with the lms version and there is a connection to the queen's jubilee but they might have tried harder with the certificate, the box and the details. you are right, it is a collectors item but does not raise in price. on the continent model companies some tome ago started to make limited editions from locomotives they paid the coloursceme for. another "funny" way to raise sells. If some company is really paying into new models and producing these in limited numbers and they are attractive i think it's a fair deal. even variations in colour and details can make a difference, i.e. if it picks out a local or regional specification, but hornby like märklin here is just creating a kind of money printer against gheir valued customers who try to keep the collection complete and i don't like this attitude. anyway, whoever likes it should feel happy to buy these as with the lms version it really makes a beauty in the glasscabinet.
    best albrecht

Funny thing, you keep mentioning that the standard buyer of these items would put them on a shelf until they're ready to sell them, and while that does make sense, I can confirm that there are those who buy them to run. For instance, I bought the gold plated American Scotsman set because I was under the assumption that, due to the gold plating, the model would be an updated version of the original American Scotsman that they had made. This was a false assumption, as it had the same low quality you'd expect, as well as various missing or poorly fitted features, like an upside down knuckle coupler. In addition, every time I ran it, there was always several people saying "you're ruining the value of it", which like, if I planned to sell it, I would be. But I don't, so meh. At any rate, maybe you could try running the models you get for a fuller experience in the future? Other than that, it was a good review I'd say.

Any item that is "a collectors piece" for the sake if being just a collectors piece will almost never go up in value. Things that actually do become collectible are usually are desirable in other ways, such as unintended very short production run or some other unique livery or variant which was never specified as being a collectible. When people would eventually narrow down the available numbers through wear and tear thus making the pristine or well kept items valuable.
Its another thing if you think that these are cool and want one purely because of that but if you want an actual investment, you'd be better off buying an off the shelf run of the mill basic model and keeping it in good shape because it will most likely go up in value in the future with some sorta profit margin

Christ, even some Lego sets from the early - late 2000's can cost almost triple their RRP due to them being discontinued and desirable to collectors.

Just to show how little that model has been run, several pieces of the valve gear are incorrectly positioned and the eccentric crank for the speedomiter is rotated 180 degrees out of position. Chances are trying to run this model won't end well, and not just because of the damage to the gold plating.

This is nothing against the 1980s serie of ARNOLD gauge n locomotives covered entirely in gold, but without motor. I dislike this concept so much - furthermore it is just an collectors item, with nobody wants today anmore (as I have seen so many of them lying like led in the model train reseller's shop etc.).

Pointless. Are Hornby trying to get yet more fools to part with yet more money? Half a thousand £££ for something you can't really use? The LMS Pacific looks well, but that's as far as it goes. The tragedy is that Hornby CAN produce excellent models at not too silly a price - the little Pecketts and Hunslets once again spring to mind...

Jesus wept. Are there really people buying gold plating models just to keep them in a cupboard then sell them on ebay in 30 years time thinking they have the modern equivalent of a Corgi Batmobile & Batboat still in its display box? They actually chose a pretty poor candidate to make that joke about, the nova is now relatively sought after in all forms from that period especially if it hasn't been modified. They go for pretty good money even with some millage on them and it's only getting harder to find a tidy example because of just how many ended up run into the ground or hedge or modified into something disgusting.

You are forgetting one thing: collecting is in the eyes of the beholder. You might conclude that it is a waste of time and money but there are plenty of collectors out there who view differently and the reasons they collect are equally as varied. If you are complaining that gold plating is pointless as it will be ruined if the model is run or used, you are quite correct, but that is not the point is it? Even you had to admit that it did look "good". But to dismiss this as "insane" is just plain lazy To each their own. It's up to people to do as they wish with their collections and what constitutes collectability and Hornby whether you like it or not are responding to that market. Your upload is a prime example of click-bait as evidenced by most of the comments here.

@@LocomotionMotion For some in this hobby, if it didn't have a motor it's collectibility would be diminished. Irrational, yes, but that's the nature of collecting. It's the same rational as having all the paperwork, box and guarantee, packaging etc. You've only got to look at Wrenn models to see that in operation. There's at least two specialist Wrenn outlets on the web: Wrenn Connoisseur and Wrenn Specialist and Collector who cater for this market. So why shouldn't Bachmann and Hornby have a share too? Let me slay another myth about this sector. Not all by any means are particularly concerned about the value, or accruing of value for their collectables. It is mostly the act of ownership in itself. If there is an aspect of increasing value that just adds to the shine of owning the item. For some not even taking it out of the box is admissable.
All hobbies are obsessions to varying degrees. And there's plenty out there who believe model railways itself to be a nerd's paradise. Let me be clear: there is no doubt that you have produced a good video, interesting, informative, well structured etc. Where I take issue with you is that you have deliberately gone out of your way to pour scorn on this model because it does not conform to your ideal as to what this model should be and who it might be aimed at. As such you have achieved your click-bait idealized responses with contributors slagging it off, job done.
