    After looking through a ton of tutorials on how to make halftones in Illustrator, I think this is by far the best one.

    I appreciate your videos. I have been an illustrator user for years and have my own ways of doing things. It's great to see other ways of using tools and learning tricks I didn't know were available! It's also good to see you doing the same thing as me in other instances, confirming I'm on the right track!

    Thanks Jason and An Tv, I ended up following An Tv suggestion about deleting the white box after ungrouping the halftone with it. Still unsure as why this didn't work as the tutorial, but at least there is another way. I was then able to do the second halftone effect.
    Thanks again.

    Would it be possible to create this same graphic -in 1 color- with half toning. The darker color being the color, the face being a halftone and the eyes/nose being halftoned again? 1 color screenprintable graphic....

    Can this just be saved as a graphic style? to cut out some of the work?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  4 года назад +1

      I wouldn't do a graphic style since it contains expanded elements, but we do have a lot of them saved as pattern fills in the folder to save time.

    Hi Sir Jason, I've got a problem under 5:10 of your video. After I expanded it, white background remained instead of the only highlighted by this time are the dots. (*A path I guess?). I tried changing the color before and after doing compound object/make but instead the color of the dot changed, All within the squares changed. I'm using CS 6 Illustrator and it's not working. However, it worked using CS3 Illustrator. I was thinking if Expand Appearance has issue in CS 6 Illustrator. Thanks!

      First look to see if you hit the advanced tab and selected the checkbox for ignore white. In CS6 it likes to not work which is annoying. If there is a white box around the halftone dots. Select and hit unground. Select the white background shape and hit delete. You might have to ungroup more than once, but it is an easy fix of deleting the white shape.

      Thanks sir. I ungrouped it multiple times until I select the white box as individual and deleted it. I'm not good at illustrator since I'm using CorelDRAW always. Now I'm practicing illustrator since there are outputs I need that Corel can't do it. Or perhaps I just don't know how to do it?
      hehe. Thank for your advice.

    Hey Jason, thanks for this tutorial. I'm having a little difficulty with getting the halftone to change change colour. After the image trace, i expand, but the selection changes to a square covering all the face. If I change the colour it then just changes the colour on top. Not sure if I am making sense, but the individual dots change colour.

      +Martin Cerda when in image trace- select advanced options -Click ignore white, click off curves. If you click preview during this step you can see if this solves the white box. Expand live trace- make a compound path- color

    • @martincerda784
      @martincerda784 7 лет назад

      Hi Jason, Unfortunately I remain with the same issue. In the video, you expand after the image trace modifications and the selection area only surrounds the halftone. When I do this it remains as a square layer with halftone as any outline. I do notice that the colour swatch fill box shows "?". I double click to change to a colour and then only end up with a complete box over the top of the image. This seems so simple, but very frustrating to achieve. My version of AI is CS6. Does this make a difference? Greatly appreciate your help.

      I had the same probl that S was so frustrating, but man, I just went on the layer of the halftone, deleted the square and left the dots lol

      Did you find the settings in the live trace to ignore white? Its under the advanced tab. This will get rid of the rectangle

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  7 лет назад

      If you didn't find it (ignore white setting) you will have to ungroup and delete the white rectangle which it sounds like you did.

    Hi i was wondering if you could help me with a problem i am encountering with the halftones. For some reason instead of being an even gradient throughout the selection, there are dots that surround the whole selection making a dotted outline I don't want. Any suggestions on how to fix that?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  6 лет назад +1

      This is before you expand and do live trace- correct? Double check you are adding the gradient to the fill and not the stroke. Go in your gradient panel to see if the stroke is in the front. If that isn’t is let me know what step you are on

    • @pawyprint
      @pawyprint 6 лет назад +1

      Thank you, that was the problem. After I removed the stroke the problem was fixed, thanks for responding!

    When i try color halftone my dots are very blurry, is there a way to fix this? ive tried using a different document size and it made no difference

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  6 лет назад +1

      When you are in color halftone did you adjust all the channels to 128? After you do your effect you will need to expand the effect and then do a live trace to bring it back into vector. The live trace should clean up the edges.

    • @savannahbuchanan9963

    Hi Jason :)... When I clic on Image Trace the shape changes from a circle to something like a diamond... You know why is that?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  7 лет назад +1

      As a matter of fact I do. After you click the Image Trace button- look for the Image Trace settings/panel. Click on the advanced tab. There are 3 things you will adjust. (Remove Noise, Ignore White, and you are looking to remove the select box that changes curves to lines/corners. I do have an image/step by step of what the image trace panel should look like here: www.jasonsecrest.com/adobe-illustrator-cc-beginner-tutorial-sad-cat/
