    This short video was taken in a Japanese Department Store located in Tennoji Osaka.
    It highlights the wrapping skills of the sales girls.
    This video has not been sped-up .. it is at normal speed.
    Location:
    Food basement of Kintetsu Department store, a 16-floor consumer extravaganza located in the same building as Abeno Harukas near Tennoji Station, Osaka.

      It is because the paper is so big it can cover the whole box, if it is a small piece of paper, it will need more tape, so it depends on the size of the paper, i think

      Origami started in China mainly used for funeral rites. Objects to be burnt for ancestors. Japan acquired the skill. I admit through origami improved my gift wrapping skills. I don't wrap near that fast.

      I traveled more than 2 million miles and see airport staffs. Japan and South Korean staffs work so efficiently, they work more than 2 times of other countries.

      @@tsuryu そうですね。頭が良くて手先も器用な日本人が多いです。Many Japanese people are smart as well as coordinated. 頭が良いか、そうでなければ手先が器用で要領がよくでなければたいてい一ヶ月くらいでクビにされるのでいつも仕事を探していました! I should have been either much smarter or more coordinated when working in the supermarket to complete with other shops, so they let me go after a month, and I always had to look for a new job. 😂

      That's actually basic education and company procedure in japan. Anything like credit cards, money and valuables are handled carefully when directed at the client. Unlike US where people literally throw shit at you.

    I once watched a gift wrapper in Okinawa and I was so amazed on how she wrapped a bottle of wine in less than 2 minutes while talking to the customer. That includes the folds on the neck of the bottle.

      I tried this last year but couldn’t get the size correctly cut for the paper, one corner was left bare. I gave up at the third gift, it probably just takes more practice since every gift is not the same size.

      That’s one of the things I love about the Japanese. They’re always thinking as a team whereas here in America, everyone thinks individually. I think if we thought more about one another and looked at the big picture, we’d get things done way faster and better as well. They’re so good at teamwork and it’s very admirable.

    The Japanese are all about presentation and quality. Even the simplest of street snacks are wrapped and presented like it is gourmet. I love how intricate they are.

      Yeah, actually what they are selling here is not expensive. I think the first one is Imagawa-Yaki, and
      prolly the box sells at 1K yen or something ($7 or so). It's a traditional sweet for commoners from the Edo era.

      I live in Okinawa Japan right now and this is true. They always package up your bags efficiently and neatly and take pride in their work. They are very quiet and polite people. Even at the drive thru they put everything including drinks in one bag and the stuff you see on the menu looks like what you get!!

    I realized last Christmas how just easier it is to wrap when you use a pile of precut sheets, rather than a bulky roll. I wish they’d sell them that way.

      I think the sheet has to be the right size for the particular box at hand. It the proportion is off, the wrapping won't work properly.

      You can just... cut them yourself? It’d be much cheaper too. Not to mention you can adjust the size of the sheet according to the box. I live in a place where pre-cut sheets are pretty common, and let me tell you it is a lot easier trying to wrap a box in one sheet rather than having to use two for one huge box...

      I'm Japanese and I can confirm that while the consumer experience is wonderful, everyday life just feels too much like I'm constantly walking a tightrope.
      I'd prefer a more laid-back culture with lower efficiency but it's probably a matter of personal preference. Can't have the best of both worlds.

      Like most Asian countries, a person's merit determines everything, it means... the person who studies the hardest get's to go the best university, and the person best qualified for the job gets the job. So, the result is, you get the best engineers, service, hospitality care and etc and etc. The opposite of this is USA, where I live, there is a lot of affirmative action and "fair equal opportunity hiring" so an employers must hire all types of people for "equality" they must hire qualified and lazy people. whereas in Japan or even Singapore, if you don't work efficiently, then you're replaced and out of a job and welfare if difficult to come by, as it should be, welfare shouldn't be easy to get.

    I learnt to wrap this way when as a young Kiwi I worked for a Japanese department store in London, UK. Thirty years later and I can still wrap faster and better than anyone!

If they sort thag at home, then, the plastic, or wraps are actually not that much waste compared to other countries that doesnt enforce rubbish management like japan. Pros and cons?

    I truly admire how the Japanese put thought into absolutely everything they do. If you are sweeping the floor, you take pride in keeping them clean and do your very best. If you gift wrap a product, it gets wrapped beautifully and is presented with reverence. Western culture could pick up a few tips.

      It also becomes very frustrating because everything becomes an important task. After a while, you have to introduce the notion of No Mind to just let this responsibility go. Sweeping a floor is JUST sweeping a floor, no need to put too much thought into it.

    I am more satisfied listening to that rich, crisp, matte, paper.
    I always prefer wrapping to that kind of paper more than the glossy, more expensive gift wrapping papers.

      生産効率って要は「一人当たりその仕事でいくら稼いだか?」なわけで、部品の値段を二倍にすれば単純に生産効率が二倍になるって代物だからな、日本はよく「生産効率が悪い」と言われるが、それって能力が低いって意味じゃなくて能力に見合った値段設定じゃないって事だ、生産効率の高い国見てみればわかるけど「何でそんな物がこんなに高いんだよ」って言いたくなる国ばかりだからな、マクドナルドのビックマックが単品で1000円とかな。日本だと500円ぐらいか?これで「欧州は日本より二倍の生産効率だ」とか言う奴いるから「お前何も分かってねーじゃん」となる。
