What our RA had us do in the beginning of the semester (which I found is was VERY helpful) was that me and my roommate filled out a "contract." This contract was a questionnaire-type form where we got together and talked about what times we preferred to sleep, study...whether we were comfortable with guys being brought over by the other roommate...if we needed silence when studying, what time was ok to turn off the lights...and ETC. (Some questions even asked us about how characters when we were on our period LOL) Anyway, this made it very easy for us to really talk about these things and find a middle ground before a day came when these differences became issues and ETC.
The two hacks I never really heard are to make sure to invest in really good headphones (because they're great for drowning out noise if your roommate is being loud) and to get two separate trashcans so you are only responsible for throwing out your own trash.
My roommate is a son of a bitch. She hardly ever trows her trash out. Instead, she leaves it in the kitchen until the whole house smells like shit. She keeps moldy canned sausages inside the fridge for weeks. She never, NEVER cleans her counter size, it's all sticky and disgusting. She never cleans the kitchen, plus she thinks she doesn't have to, in her conception it is me the one doing the mess, which is completely false cause I hardly ever cook things. The stew is disgusting and smells terrible cause she doesn't clean it. I don't get it. There is a package of sour cream atached to the walls of the fridge, it has been sitting there for LITERALLY ALMOST A YEAR.
One thing I wish I had known before having college roommates is how important it is to set rules with each other at the BEGINNING of the school year. Trying to divvy up responsibilities with cleaning, and determining when it's okay to have friends over, etc., is so much harder to do after the first term. I have definitely learned my lesson and hope everyone starting college soon learns from my mistake! Setting things straight at the beginning of the year can really make living with other people so much easier!
+Marisa Rose CONGRATULATIONS! You've been selected by yours truly for a special surprise heading your way! So excited to send you this treat--just email me at the address listed in the description of this video with your full name & address and I'll be sure to get that to you as soon as possible!
I know. They're absolutely beautiful! I almost thought they were fake at one point. The sclera is like perfectly white. It's really weird but awesome at the same time. I appreciate the video as well.
when you get to the point where you are paying rent, make sure you get your roommate to sign a roommate agreement laying out how much they are meant to pay for rent and bills. I learned this the hard way. Don't get screwed over!
This isn't really a hack, but more of a tip in general... definitely rely on your RA when it comes to conflict resolution. I had a lot of issues with my roommate this semester that ended with her moving out, but I relied heavily on my RA for support! RAs are trained to help you transition to life in a residence hall, especially with roommate issues. Don't be afraid to ask them for help!
Holy crap what great timing Katherine! This was super helpful for my upcoming year as a freshman. I've been watching you videos for 3 years and I love you! Extremely fun, informative and comfortable feel to the videos.
Your eyes are absolutely beautiful! I almost had an inkling to think that they were fake at one point. The sclera is like perfectly white. It's really weird but awesome at the same time. I appreciate the video as well.
#Getcollege ready a good hack is to have a container to put your food, one for their food, and one for the food that you can share, that way it is obvious what food is yours and what you share without having to ask :)
I'm not the most trusting person. I recommend keeping a safe in your room; not only to protect your stuff against a snooping roommate, but anyone can break in. :) #GetCollegeReady
I love this video and these are all so so helpful!! I think communication is key when it comes to rooming with someone so as long as you let each other know what's expected things should go smoothly!
+kittyBlu they have access to the appartment you live in so that means uf you don't get a safe (depends on person) they might steal your crap or it can be annoying that they have an early schedule and they wake you up :/
I had a crazy roommate who didnt like me having my bicycle on the balcony and threw it over the side. Thats how i found out from her that she didn't like it being there. 😫
I will definitely be using these hacks, especially those apps! I'm still waiting on a few college notifications (including USC!) and I'm nervous as hell. I did an internship program over the summer where I lived in a college dorm with a roommate and this is not necessarily a 'hack' per se but I say that it is so important to figure out the food situation inside the dorm. Whether your roommate or you like to share or not and/or how you guys can save money on snacks and things if you do share!
i like the tips but the one thing i will never do is share my schedule with anyone that i live with. in college you are independent and for someone like me who likes to spend a bit of time to myself i dont want my roommate to bother me at any other hour when im "not busy". idk just my thoughts.
I live in a suite with my roommate and 2 other girls & we have double bedrooms and a shared "foyer" & bathroom. We put up a whiteboard to leave each other encouraging messages and each other's schedules so we knew when to be quiet. We also had a lot of fun getting to know each other while decorating the shared space together!
#getcollegeready Along with the cleaning just in general set limits on how late the lights can stay on if one person is trying to sleep or how far in advance you want to know if they have someone over and just things like that! Great video
Hi! I'm going to be attending USC in the fall (Fight on!) and was wondering if I should look for my own roommate via FB groups and whatnot or if I should just leave it to USC to pick for me? Both seem kinda scary haha what do you suggest/ what did you do?
I've only been home for like four days and I'm already missing university :( So I'm binge-watching a bunch of your videos aha, ahhhh I remember watching nearly every single one of your college videos before I started uni
One thing I learned was kinda the opposite of the washitape one lol. Basically talk to your roommate over the summer (if you know them great, otherwise get their number) and divvy up shared stuff like a fridge or microwave or shower curtain or whatever. That way you don't spend money on more things than you have to
Tip I've learned this year. Currently I'm studying abroad in Ireland and rooming with an Irish girl. Best tip I've learned from this experience is to sit down and talk with your roommate the first day. Get to know them, what they like to do, and what they expect from you as a roommate. I did not do this but wish I would've. My roommate and I have had issues because of this and our culture differences!
Something that might also work for tip #4. There's this app called TimeTree that works really well for schedules and arranging events with your dormmates or within a specific group. I definitely recommend it!
Your hair straightened is pretty but when you have your hair curled, it looks amazing! Regardless your beautiful just saying that your curls always seem to great!
I'm a high school senior, so I am currently meeting people from the different colleges I've applied to to talk prospective roommates. My hack is to be straight up and honest about yourself; its better to let your roommate know what they're dealing with before than struggling to get along later in college. Hope this helps! #getcollegeready
I feel like having a chore list would work for some people, but I would flat out tell my roommate no way. It's sort of juvenile to me. Like if the trash is full, take it out. If the tp roll is empty, get another. If the floor is dirty, clean it.
I'm in my second semester of freshman year and I would highly recommend for people to 1) trust the roommate surveys schools give and 2) set (and enforce) rules with your roommate. You don't want to be upset if your roommate isn't following your contract so you have to be able to speak up!
I'm starting college in September. I won't have a rooommate, but there will be shared kitchen and living areas. The good thing is we will also have a student coach, he will make some rules, so I will only have to do my part and not organize everything :)
Get EVERYTHING in writing. Fill up your roommate contract with everything you think of even if it seems like common sense. Always specify that they are not permitted to touch your stuff (even if you are friends-trust me). Prepare for worst case scenarios, because if you need to hold them accountable for breaking your trust, you will need to be able to prove that they broke an agreed upon rule. And, if worst comes to worst, go to the Res Life office to see about getting your room changed. I had to leave a crazy roommate last semester and Res Life got me a nice single room far away from her.
I cant wait to try out this chorma app, that was definitely the worst part about living with people. Everyone had different standards and nobody had time to do it. Plus our dorm was a trap house so we had people in there all the time
Wait* So when did Change the toilet paper become a CHORE??? That's Personal Hygiene! If you have a Roommate that doesn't change the toilet paper' That's Grounds for Dismissal!!! #Nas~2~The~T
Hi Katherout, I checked the app store and chorma as well as homeslice apps are not available anymore or maybe just cause I am from Canada. Any other suggestions?
We’re grown women trying to live on a budget and save in the city. We shouldn’t have to tell each other, especially since she knew before moving in how absolutely clean I am. I have OCD and she knew before moving in. I find myself cleaning up after her. My schedule is crazy busy and she’s more flexible. She finds time to sleep in and party. I’m strictly on a saving mode so I don’t go out drinking and spending 💰This seems helpful. I pray it works, so far not much has. I have left very obvious notes all over the house as well as verbally explained what needs to be taken care of for what purpose in the nicest possible way. She seems to get it, or acts like it at the time. Might do it for a day or a week max. Then I have to repeat and remind. It’s so annoying, especially since I’m exhausted by the end of my day and come home to clean up after her. It’s a hit or miss, it may or may not be clean. I’m almost 15 years older than her, I don’t get why she’s so lazy at her age. Also when she leaves something behind in the sink I used to wash it if I was doing my dishes but I quit because she wouldn’t wash even one spoon if I left it while she was in the middle of doing the dishes. Seriously? 😲
#getcollegeready Also, if you live in a suite-style dorm, make sure you check with your suite mates about the showering schedule. I know my suite mates and I have all tried to get a shower at the same time, only to realize another person is in there. If you want to shower at a certain time, be sure to talk it over with them first.
#getcollegeready You will disagree with your roommate no matter what, even if you were best friends with them beforehand. You have to be completely honest with them, and tell them what the problem is so that there isn't any tension in the room.
Washi tape is also good for TAPING YOUR ROOMMATES MOUTH CLOSED BECAUSE THEY NEVER SHUT THE HELL UP. She even talks in her sleep. I can't get her voice OUT OF MY HEAD. GAH. I learned I cannot live with people.
Can you do a class organization/ supply video I am a hs senior and I have no idea what system would work for me I'm used to binder organization but I've heard conflicting opinions on using binders in college #getcollege ready also ty for this series I feel it will be very useful for me

I invested in part 1 of your tip. I haven't heard her voice clearly in a few months now (we don't talk anyway)
Can get hearos at dollar store 2 pairs orange color plasticy/ rubbery type plugs that plug the ears great for noise reduction! 2 pairs one dollar!

Keep your dorm key on your wrist with hair tie. 😊
Another alternative to the chorema app is an app called OurHome. It looks like the Chorema and homeslice app combined. I havent used it so idk if its good or not, i just thought id suggest it.
Edit: i have an android, so idk if its available for apple
Your eyes are so blue it looks like the whites around them are light blue too 😍
My hack: Jailbreak ur roomates phone and lock them out until they do their chores 😈
I'm sharing a room with my twin brother, and soon sharing with my baby sister, so this may help.

+Candyicsma it is from AE!
Change the toilet paper as a chore lol
You have the prettiest eyes!
For hack number two I have an even simpler solution. Open a shared google docs list. It’s so simple and you may even already use google docs for homework
is chore ma no longer an available ap several years later? I cannot find it or maybe my spelling is off.
Freshman year was great!!! Sophomore year off campus SUCKED
I start in a few weeks as well and im going from just 1 sister to 4 semi room mates 1 in my room 3 in my suit and me, im scared.
