At first glance, the blatant square shape of Kanch Mahal belies its architectural finesse. The two-storeyed monument is an exquisite work of masonry, which stands in the middle of pruned gardens near Akbar’s tomb in Sikandra Fort, Agra. Head closer, and you come across elements of artistry that were mastered by the Mughals, and have remained unmatched in their glory even till date.
Kanch Mahal was built sometime around 1605-19 a resort for women of royalty, to be used by Mughal Emperor Jehangir as a hunting lodge. Its surrounding gardens were decorated with water bodies and causeways. Eventually, the structure fell under the care of the Church Missionary Society, and was later taken over by the Department of Archaeology.
The walls of the mansion are made of intricately carved red stone carved red with designs of wine vases, arabesques, floral creepers and geometrical shapes. Entry into the central hall is via an oblong doorway framed with carved wood. Upon entering, your eye meets the reflective beauty of a ceiling studded with mosaics of blue, green and orange glazed tiles. This is possibly what lent the building its name. Two openings into the mahal flood the space with sunlight and fresh air, and all of the four square-shaped rooms consist of jharokhas and spacious balconies for ventilation. Octagonal pillars on two sides of the central hall served as pedestals for the piers on the upper storey.
