Funnily enough apparently it was supposed to be a Ghost in the Shell game till that got turned down and so Bungie decided to keep the game and call it something else and change a few things.
In manga, it is sugested that Kusanagi looks like a cheap, serial made model with all the fancy stuff being iternal and softwarewise. All to make her blend in easier and detract goons from 'stealing her' for parts. I thing there's a scene in original anime too where she pases by a woman that looks just like her.
In that feature anime everyone thinks about when talking about GITS (I forgor the name) the blonde girl near the end is pretty much a copy of her in terms of looks
Oh man, Ghost in the Shell is so timeless. I've always considered Batou to be the most interesting character besides The Major. If you ask him about the soul and the complexities of what makes a human being , he would probably brush it aside, but he DOES confide in The Major in her most vulnerable moments. He's not stupid at all, he's just very careful about what he chooses to put thought and value into.
The episode where Batou needs to confront his past in Brazil is a particular favorite of mine. Where they go over PTSD and how Batou in the sewers is still in that jungle.
80's/90's cyberpunk anime is peak, but the Stand Alone Complex series still stands as my favourite piece of media ever. Absolutely adore everything about that show and it really cemented my love of the cyberpunk genre. I remember getting the PS2 game as soon as it released. Was a little disappointed by the length but lost count how many times I replayed it. Absolute banger of a franchise.
It’s crazy how Ghost in the Shell made Cyberpunk genre super popular but now it’s just completely faded away. First Assault was so much darn fun with buddies. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voicing Motoko for so many years.
Can I just say this about the 2004 PS2 game: look at how the enemy NPC bodies get thrown against the wall when grenades detonate near them. In most games, when you have that same scenario, their bodies will kind of just slide against the wall, like they're respecting the fact that the wall is solid and has collision, but it doesn't really affect the momentum. But in this game, you can FEEL the weight of the impact as their bodies smack against and literally bounce off of the wall's surface. It STILL looks incredible, even by today's standards!
Nobody takes time to choreograph/motion capture death animations in games anymore. I remember how chilling and "state of the art" it was in 1997 playing GoldenEye, capping some fool, and watching him hold the side of his head or his balls, writhing in agony, before going into the fetal position and dying - Games don't even do this anymore! You can watch their arm or leg spazz out by a railing. But yeah, like you said, you could feel the weight of the destruction you created on the screen.
I would give anything for a new Ghost in the Shell game. Cyberpunk 2077 is great and all, but I want Ghost in the Shell, preferably a new Stand Alone Complex game.
It's too dry. Some of it is great, and I like the overarching themes a lot, but I think the writing is just a bit too moody for my taste. It's a great film though, and I think they sort of perfected the balance of tone with the Stand Alone Complex television show.

If you read the manga the idea behind the bodies of all Section 8 members were that they outwardly looked like run of the mill cyborg variants yet had all the high end military tech hidden within. The concept being that this allowed them to blend in with the average population. Given the way things are going I kind of assume most girls turned cyborgs would opt for big knockers these days :(

In fact, you can play any PlayStation game in high definition with an emulator. The games look MUCH better, sometimes even reaching the level of PS2 graphics. It's been available for a long time and is very easy to set up. It's really weird to see gameplay footage in such low resolution when it didn't really look that pixelated on old TVs, and now you can upscale it with an emulator.
As someone who emulated it there are some minor graphical bugs on the PS2 one. Specifically how it overlays screen effects like the smoke from explosions or the green computer overlay. It makes it look like waffles, with some tweaking it can prolly be fixed easily.
14:46 @Gggmanlives When you mentioned the highscore screen, I snapped back what you said about the grenades and scoring higher points, and it instantly made me realise; it's got to be an arcade port. Good overview! I played the PS2 game back in the day, unfortunately jumping the gun and playing the Japanese version before the US version released, so I had no idea what the plot was about, but I remember thoroughly enjoying the game. I really like how controlling Major feels very acrobatic and yet having a sense that she is a heavy robotic war machine. There's a certain feeling of heaviness to her and the impact during combat and while jumping feels great. Played and finished the PSP game as well and enjoyed it too. I always thought the PSP game would've been even better with a PS2 controller.
Ghost in the Shell PSX is also underrated for one of the most BANGER SOUNDTRACKS on all of PSX. This game introduced me to Garage/Techno and gave me a driving desire and love for some grooving DnB and Funky Basslines
The "Rice" thing is one of the key plot points that carry the Ghost in the Shell(GitS) storyline. Not just literally, but for what it represents. It's easy to explain(4), but you need to understand a little about the world first for it to make sense(1)(2)(3). 1. GitS takes place after a horrible world war. Infrastructure destroyed. Nukes happened. Many countries have areas break off and declare themselves autonomous regions. 2. Japan creates micromachines(MM), which skyrocket it's wealth because it licenses out the tech worldwide to fix the radiation problems from the war. MM were used for other things too, like medicine which allows replacement limbs/organs/bodies which happened to be in high demand due to wartime injuries. Food was a problem, especially for an agriculturally poor country like Japan. Someone in one of Japan's autonomous regions figured out how to use MM to make/grow rice WAY better. 3. Japan, mirroring real life empires, patented the tech as their own, despite this region claiming it was it's own country. Japan, mirroring real life empires, keeps the wealth of 'their' invention to themselves, which leaves the autonomous region in poverty. The region was unable to get help from other countries, since the UN refused to recognize them. This eventually leads to terrorist acts in an attempt to get recognized. 4. Terrorists in the autonomous region contaminate a batch of MM-rice headed to 'the elite' of Japan with a MM virus intended to cause those who eat it to kill themselves. The plot fails when the guy who invented MM-rice(?) dies, and Section 9 is called in to investigate the strange death and then stop the plot. People often talk about the 'deep questions' GitS asks about AI and what it really means to be a 'person'. They often miss the more subtle commentary about all the ways war is shitty, and how the big players will do horrible things to stay on top.
@@Gggmanlives Yup. I admit that it certainly seems pretty weird/random if you don't have the context. One of the things that makes the GitS stuff so great is how wide the appeal really is. It's political commentary about our world. It's got super cool tech. It has deep philosophical questions. The action is amazing. The characters are really well written. The music, especially from SAC, is amazing. You can watch it as a cool action movie. Or you can write a graduate thesis.
YO... This is wild. I literally just finished telling my friend how I'd love to see some kind of open-world police sim based on GITS, and he was talking about how he felt it was weird that more people haven't explored it. Then I go to my latest feed and boom the fucking Gman is talking about it. Might be a sign... Anyone seeing this looking to do a GITS game or GITS inspired game, this might be a sign for you.
Exactly! I’ve been saying this for years. I guess the anime cyberpunk aesthetic kind of missed the open-world wave of the PS360 era. I keep hoping someone picks this concept up and runs with it though.
@@Mid-TierMechaPilot Yea it's pretty wild. Not sure if you've seen that ANANTA launch trailer, but if you haven't check that out and imagine the theme and era being set in the normal GITS setting. It has a really amazing art style, but leans a bit heavy into the manga-lolli style as opposed to the mature anime style from that time-period. So much potential out there lingering in wait.
@@AaronVictoria Yeah, I’ve seen the ANANTA trailer and it’s not quite my thing unfortunately. Well at least there’s a new GitS show in the works that is using Shirow’s original designs. So maybe there will be a renewed interest in a game that isn’t in the free to play space.
@@Mid-TierMechaPilot Yea I'm right there with you on that. I'd definitely prefer something more inline with the anime's presentation, but artist seems to struggle with the transition, often. That's why I was thinking something like ANANTA could work. However, they did a really good job with the art direction for the online FPS. I thought that did a great job of capturing the look and style of the anime and could even see a third-person take on that style doing really well. Here's to hoping someone gives it a shot.
I still think the best version of GitS was Neotokyo - too bad it never got the attention it deserved. First Assault wasn’t bad either, had some fun with it.

the console PSX itself came with demo disc, they where called Interactive CD and had several versions through the years, mines on 1999 was Interactive CD Volume 7 and it was a BLAST!
TV series and a sequel? OH Gman, if only that were the case. There's Original, alternative version, sequel, spin off movie series Arise, 3 seasons of the TV show each one with it's own extra content on the side which has extra content.. I enjoyed the show a lot, but keeping track of the hierarchy there leads to madness.
Man that demo was amazing I definitely played it more than I did playing the rest of the game I loved that game but I think this game really made me fall in love with shooters like this
The PS1 Ghost in the Shell game is amazing! It's made by the same developers of Jumping Flash and has easily one of the best controls on the PS1. Its only real flaw is that it's short.
I tried finding the first game time and time again. Nobody in the Midwest had it in my area. We called every store every week until at one point my favorite gaming store made an email account to email me if they could ever get it in. People don't realize how obscure this stuff was in America at the time. You were paying 60-100 per VHS tape for 3 episodes and the games were unobtainable for most people and if it ever showed up at Blockbuster someone would just rent & steal.
It’s crazy how under appreciated Gits: Sac is. With how much niche cult classics blow up on tiktok now like Serial Experiments Lain, it’s wild that Ghost in the Shell still hasn’t had it’s flowers like it used to.
I remember playing that Ghost In The Shell PS1 demo quite a bit when I was a little kid and not quite understanding things. Might have to check it out now. Also, Cool Boarders 2! Man! Hittin me with all the classics, haha.
Chun li and her twins are iconic for early millennial anime fans. Nailed it with ninja scroll too, that whole build up and sequence is amazing. For the vhs manga video generation those trailer videos kept those moments hyped and engraved them into our minds.
Banger video I remember playing the demo for sac on the nov 2004 psm demo disc that also had the demo for silent hill 4 , underground 2 and was so blown away with ghost in the shell it got me into the series and been a fan since the soundtrack for the PS2 game was so good still got the PS1 game psp game and the imported PS2 version
OK, the GitS PS1 does look really fun. I'm also kicking myself for not getting the PS2 game because Xplay gave it a 2/5 and it came out a day before Halo 2
Ghost in the Shell is my favourite cyberpunk property because it's primarily about genuine cyborgs, as in people with technology that allows them to directly interface with technology by using their cyberdized brains instead of "cyborgs" people who have i dunno robo arms with guns in them.
Having a new game where you could just go ham in a spider tank would be nice. Bonus points if you could crush a mofos head with that little retractable claw thing.
The Playstation 1 game was so good, but I don't know anyone else who's played it before. Was pretty ahead of it's time, wish more people talked about it more, so it was great to revisit it here!
It's funny that the part of the redmagic bit that appealed to me is the fact that it lays flat. Now if it just came with a stylus they might actually get me.
Man I LOVED that GITS Online game. Seriously, me and my friend loved playing that together. I was pretty gutted when they shut it down mind you, but being an MMO fan I've been through it enough to know when to see it coming and get ready for it lol (anyone remember Auto Assault?!?)
I played Oni way before seeing the first Ghost in the Shell film and for the longest Time i was sure that Oni was actually a Ghost Game adaptation. I remember thinking "oh yeah, this Is the anime of that cool Game i played on PS2 when i was a kid" lol
Thumbnail was fire man.. Literally. I liked the anime movies quite a bit.. The live action version was rather disappointing though. Good Video review. As always.
Seeing that GITS: SAC on PSP was an FPS always trips me up on how devs tried so hard to put genres that didn't yet belong on handhelds. Fighting games were like this on Game Boy until the NGPC came out when games like the first SNK vs Capcom came out on it. After that, platforms like the DS (with Bleach: [OG] Dark Souls and a solid port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) and PSP had some astounding fighting games on each platform. Hell, in my experience with the 3DS, we had a solid, yet ambitious port of Super Street Fighter IV and an amazing (though fans would disagree due to it's content ratings compared to the console games) exclusive Dead or Alive game. FPS? TPS? Even remembering on my DS how many times I played the Metroid Prime Hunters demo before I got more DS games (and mainly playing GBA stuff), man, they needed more time then. And then the Vita, Switch, and Deck came out with two sticks.
Ghost in the Shell as a game nowdays could be very very good. Gameplay could be something like True Crime/Sleeping Dogs franchise where you play as a cop but have to balance out the private life and the fact that you are not human.
I really loved that PS1 game and have always told people thats its one of the best games on that system. Especially when you consider how everyone was still trying to figure out how to make 3D games.
Gotta love the series. That and serial experiments lain was my first dip into themes more mature than dude fights other dude while yelling and I never looked back
Not only these old retro games, I fucking loved the shooter game they released on steam some time ago. What a great balanced team shooter it was. Really really miss that game now.
I've played FA for about half a year daily. It wasn't the best FPS, but I love GitS, so that made it worth my while. Some mechanics were nice, some were weird... but it was more a P2W game than anything else. Without a half decent team you couldn't win though... I guess that's with every MP FPS these days. IIRC it also ran terribly on even good hardware. Still, it was fun and I do kinda miss the game. To be able to turn on your thermaoptic camouflage, to hear Batou and just enter the world of GitS was something special.

Another amazing video nice work thanks man!
Good news, there was actually a laserdisc release of the PS1 cutscenes!
...What?!
Neotokyo Half Life 2 multiplayer mod was also unofficialy based on the Ghost in the Shell IP.
Same with Counter-Strike Neo I'm sure
It has an ost so good it keeps the game alive somewhat.
Ghost in the Shell PSX is also underrated for one of the most BANGER SOUNDTRACKS on all of PSX.
This game introduced me to Garage/Techno and gave me a driving desire and love for some grooving DnB and Funky Basslines
"Turtling a fat shit" got a good belly laugh out of me. Good job
So what you're saying is you don't like the SAC series lol
This is actually kinda cool then!
Cavia also made the first few Drakenguard/ Nier games and Beat Down: Fists Of Vengeance.
Drakengard story is underrated asf. Super interesting how it ties into Nier.
@ Leonard is just cursed af.
Did you just put bible black footage 😂
This caught me completely off guard as well 😂
I dare you to watch it again and tell me about the plot
@@Montross the plot is about a based dude getting powers from an evil ancient book while having big breasted women falling over him for said evil book 🫡 📖

the console PSX itself came with demo disc, they where called Interactive CD and had several versions through the years, mines on 1999 was Interactive CD Volume 7 and it was a BLAST!
One of my favorite parts of the anime was when she looked at boto and made himself punch himself in the face 😂
Your credit scroll at the end, bruh, SHIFT UP! LOL
9:26 grandpa simpson: which was the style at the time
Man that demo was amazing I definitely played it more than I did playing the rest of the game I loved that game but I think this game really made me fall in love with shooters like this
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!!! I am playing Stanalone Complex on PCSX2, with 60 fps patch and oled, it is fantastic.
I just KNEW that Gman had love for Ninja Scrolls. What a movie!
I love stand alone complex anime when I was a kid. My local blockbuster never had the games so I wasn’t able to rent it.
Holy… I owned and played all three of those GiTS games. I never thought I’d see them come up again.
Winnie and Donald dancing gets me everytime xD
Dude thank you for this forgotten gems
OK, the GitS PS1 does look really fun. I'm also kicking myself for not getting the PS2 game because Xplay gave it a 2/5 and it came out a day before Halo 2
I love the PSP and PS1 games the BEST!
Excellent video!
Ghost in the Shell is my favourite cyberpunk property because it's primarily about genuine cyborgs, as in people with technology that allows them to directly interface with technology by using their cyberdized brains instead of "cyborgs" people who have i dunno robo arms with guns in them.
35:24 a man of culture.
You have rice on your face.
Having a new game where you could just go ham in a spider tank would be nice. Bonus points if you could crush a mofos head with that little retractable claw thing.
I'll never forget the Ghost in the Shell PS1 bomb level. That was a formative experience.
The Playstation 1 game was so good, but I don't know anyone else who's played it before. Was pretty ahead of it's time, wish more people talked about it more, so it was great to revisit it here!
Wish more games would use Drum and Bass nowadays. Used to love playing this back in the day for the soundtrack alone.
Ghost in the shell and Akira some the best Japanese cyberpunk movies ever made.
I just showed my fiance Akira. She didn't really get it. I don't get how she didn't get it. 😂
The plot is hard to follow in the ps2 game. It took me a couple days to get a coherent plot summary together. Quite proud of it.
4:10 Still the greatest opening in video game history. I've replayed other games more often, but FF7 will always be my favorite game of all time.
I remember replaying the PS1 demo over and over. I had never played anything like it with the movement and climbing etc.
I remember the intro to the '97 Ps1 game.
Pure cinema.
Some of the most underrated games ever, they are all truly amazing!
To bad we missed out on First Assault 😥
Motoko Kusanagi is my Waifs, gen Z dont know great anime characters.
Gits 2nd gig is the best anime series ever ❤
I've played FA for about half a year daily.
It wasn't the best FPS, but I love GitS, so that made it worth my while. Some mechanics were nice, some were weird... but it was more a P2W game than anything else. Without a half decent team you couldn't win though... I guess that's with every MP FPS these days.
IIRC it also ran terribly on even good hardware.
Still, it was fun and I do kinda miss the game. To be able to turn on your thermaoptic camouflage, to hear Batou and just enter the world of GitS was something special.
Had that same demo disc as a kick lol that's a nice blast from the past to see
RIP Atsuko Tanaka.
Last month was Satomi Korogi's 62nd birthday and she will ever join Genshin cast member! When?
