  • When looking for Milkweed there is an imposter that you need to know about. That imposter is Dogbane and it looks very much like the Common Milkweed that you may want tot forage. Dogbane is a poisonous plant that often will grow in the same environments and exudes a milky sap as well. However foraging this plant is going to make you very sick. We'll talk about the ways to tell the two plants apart so that way you can be sure you're gathering the right plant.

    I always wait to see if the plant starts branching like a bush. If it does I know it’s dogbane/Indian hemp 😊

    Seeing the term Indian hemp I looked up if it could be used to make cordage or rope. Yes. Described as "exceptionally strong"

      Yes it's supposed to be excellent cordage and appears to have been widely used. Hopefully I'll be able to make a video on it later this year when it's ready to be harvested.

    I have this growing in my yard. I thought it was milkweed. The flowers bring lots of pollinators. Right now it's producing the spiky seed pod. I guess I should go out in yard and cut it all down.

    I thought common milkweed was poisonous?

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles
      @TrilliumWildEdibles  3 месяца назад +6

      No. Common Milkweed is not poisonous and has a long history of use as food and medicine. Other species of Milkweed are poisonous however so it's important to know the difference.

      @TrilliumWildEdibles cool!
      I know one can make rope from stinging nettle, but as I cut mine continuously I will never have enough tall stems to make fiber- besides, it's quite a process.....

      It is a butterfly host plant and tends to colonize an area

    Looks like a young poke weed.

    • @TrilliumWildEdibles
      @TrilliumWildEdibles  3 месяца назад +1

      Sort of. Pokeweed leaves are usually brighter green with a reddish hue to it and they're much larger.
