    In this video review we go hands-on with the Seiko 5 Sports (SRPD53k1, SRPD57k1, SRPD55K1). The unofficial heir to the SKX throne.
    Unlike the SKX the SRPD does not feature a screw-down crown and the water resistance maxes out at 100m rather than 200m. If you really need the dive specifications, this is simply not the Seiko for you. If you are looking for a nice Seiko diver then you are spoilt for choice with the Seiko Prospex collection. Now, for everybody else, this is a very compelling package. For what it's worth, I would consider the black and white SRPD55k1 as the most versatile of the bunch!

    I bought this watch for under $200 USD and have worn it in the rain, in the shower, on construction sites in the Pacific Northwest in heavy rain, I've dropped it, smashed it with a hammer, dinged it against rebar, taken it camping, worn it in the snow, magnetized it a bunch of times (demagnetized it with a cheapo demagnetizer from amazon), and it still runs strong as my daily and is accurate to + - 4 seconds per day.
    I've also compared it to my buddy's SKX and the fit and finish is quite a bit better than an SKX.
    All the momos who complain that it isn't "a real diver's watch" because it's ONLY 100m water resistant are the same guys who spend 8 hours a day filling out Excel spreadsheets in a cubicle but think they need sapphire crystals and 500m water resistant chunky divers for their daily beaters

    Bought this a month ago as my first watch (SRPD51K1). At first I regretted buying it because of the negative reviews of it not being a legit diver's watch. But it grew on me because I bought it at a discount and there are far more positive reviews that praise it for its versatile design and improved features. Besides, I only know few people that dive below 100m and they use a GShock or a computer. I'd say the 100m resistance is more than enough for all the people that buy this. Besides there's their prospex sea collection if they want a reliable watch. I encourage buyers to steer slightly away from other's negative opinion on their first-watch-to-be and just ask themselves the question if they actually like the watch or nah.

      100 meters is more than enough for a watch since a lot of people who buy these watches don't even dive. Still prefer the look of my skx031 as I love the 3 o clock crown position and it has a lower profile which makes it more comfortable to wear.

    I've had mine for a year and it is quite the offering for $200.00 -240.00. First, though not ISO certified its depth rating stands at 100ft and if seiko says 100ft that means 100ft. Next, the lume is good. Mine is very good. Also, the 4r36 is much improved and the hacking & winding is awesome. Classic measurement and wearable to say the least. A strap monster and the bracelet does NOT disappoint at this price. I didn't even want one...but now after 12 months I love it. I have SKX and a pepsi GMT but this is my everyday.

      Thanks for the real life feedback! Yes, the 100m is more than what almost everyone will ever test this at, and great for a daily wearer (not to say I wouldn't have liked a screw down crown though ;-)) I assume you meant the lume is good (typo?) - it is fantastic, actually surprised me (I should know better.. Seiko and lume, always a winner). With your pepsi GMT, I can see this being a superb alternative for the rougher days :-) Thanks for the feedback and watching along!

    Bought mine for 200 a while ago. It hasn’t lost a second in the last 3 weeks. The rare times it does, it will usually only be like 1 to 3 in a week. That said, it will go fast a few and find its way right back to being on the money. It’s really insane, for the price. Punches way above its price point (especially since it has the same movement as the Turtle). Because of that, it won out over some of my other great watches, as my daily driver/beater. I bought the Seiko 5 GMT jubilee style bracelet, to give it the old SKX feel once in a while, but I actually really like the sturdy oyster style that it came with. May not be a true diver, but it’s still a tool watch and I only really need it for swimming or rafting

    Great video and fantastic editing! The problem now is that seiko doesn’t have an affordable “true” diver below 42,5mm.
    There is no equivalent to the skx013 (or skx007) in their current lineup nowadays and I think that’s a shame. I think the SRPD is great, I just regret the lack of alternative at this price point...

      Great reading you here again! :-) Yes, the SKX was such a great value proposition, I am also sad to see that go..I would suggest the Turtle, but understand that is a fair few dollars more expensive.. I think it all fits within Seiko's strategy, if you want a true diver - bump up to the (more expensive) Prospex range. The alternative suggested by John Muthan in the comments here is excellent value - not a Seiko though.

    Great video! I've owned a black dial version for 2 years now. It's my daily driver and recently had some mods done to it. I added better Oyster bracelet. And a new, lumed Seamaster-type bezel insert and dome sapphire crystal, it adds a level of class that I did not think was possible. I love my watch even more now. As for the 100M WR, I don't plan on diving with this watch and wouldn't even if the WR was doubled. I would use a true diving computer. Measuring bottom time with the bezel is kinda cool, but I don't do it that way. But, a tip of the cap to those that do.
    I view this watch as a simple, inexpensive dive-style watch that one can wear to the office, the gym and around town. Yeah, it's not for everyone.

      All Seikos (and Grand Seiko) are set for price increases. This has been a long term strategic play from them with the bottom falling out in the industry. They have also discussed it openly (If I can find the link to the interview - I will post it here). I still find it a very fair price here for what you get. The Hardlex never bothered me, but that’s a personal thingy :-) Would you dismiss it based on it having hardlex?

      @@degriff well I have bought the dressKX (srpe51k1) and was not used to hardlex, long story short, I shattered the side of the crystal and desperately looking to get a saphir replacement for it. And not doing anything special I wouldn't do with my other watches...
      No I know and understand what you are saying about seiko prices but comparing this specific seiko 5 vs the orient kamasu same prices, cousin company but screw down crown, and saphir crystal, I would not consider this piece as good entry for people entering the passion, you need a problem free watch and the kamasu is a way stronger proposition.
      Why provide a diver look if you don't provide diver specs, unless you want to surf on a well known design and pump up the prices doing some serious production cost cuttings, I believe seiko is lacking respect for their customers on this specific model...

    The SRPD is most definitely NOT “starting it’s own journey” while it’s there looking EXACTLY like an SKX, but bringing less functionality and durability. The loss of pressure rating makes this a non starter for me. I mean sure it’s pretty, but that’s because its basically an SKX. To my mind this is a rip off playing on the reputation of the older and now superseded watch.

    • @RM-el3gw
      @RM-el3gw 3 года назад +1

      I think Seiko recognized that the SKX was very popular, but the vast majority of people who bought them weren't going diving with them. The SRPD provides drilled lugs, a nicer dial, better movement, see-through caseback, and the same form factor as the SKX, the missing screw down crown being the only drawback. I think it's a move in the right direction.

    • @psychalogy
      @psychalogy 3 года назад

      @@RM-el3gw Seiko could easily have dropped the new movement into the old case and had a watch that not only looked like a diver but was one. What they did instead was create a watch with the look but none of the functionality that mattered. Even if people never actually went diving with it (although plenty did, and still do) that you COULD actually take it somewhere dangerous is what made it cool.
      As an analogy,, owning and driving an actual performance car is cool, even if you never take it to the track and hit its top speed. Owning a Camry that has had a performance car look-a-like body kit applied to it is most definitely not cool.
      As the 5 is all about style over substance essentially it’s now just a fashion watch that carries with it more than a hint of being poser-ish.
      Im sure there are plenty of people who fit into that category, after all, cheap fashion watches do tend to fly off the shelves, but I’m personally done with the brand. Grand Seiko was the natural place to look to to continue my collection but not after this cash grab.
      They’ve basically made their own knock off of a popular watch.
