    I don't really know why but I find war hammers to be beautiful in their diversity. Just the variation in the head construction. There is often, to me, a grotesque beauty to them. Hope some day to add one to my collection.

      @medievalreview  7 лет назад +8

      They are very diverse and the designs speak heavily to their intended use. "grotesque beauty" may be the most apt description for weapons that are art at the same time.

    Polearms are often aestetically very pleasing. As most medieval hardware is.

    i really dig the sword reviews, but its nice to mix it up from time to time. and thanks to the viewer that sent it in for the rest of us to see!

    This was a lot of fun to watch, I find your reviews always have the best camera work and content.
    Are you planning on reviewing your Windlass Battlecry arming sword? I'm curious about the line, but I can't find enough reviews of it, and it would be cool to see your take.

    As to the balance... That was probably supposed to have a spike or butt, at the end of the pole, which would help a bit with the balance.

    So it's hammertime :)

  • @atrior7290
    @atrior7290 5 лет назад

    8:10 no, linguets are ment to hold the head on the shaft, protection against cuts is a secondary bonus...
    8:34 no, because if the languets are not linked to the head, the head is not connected to the shaft and... falls
    8:03 what ? usually there ar on the four sides ? That's rather the exception than the rule, and yes if you have them on four sides then the additional ones are mainely ment to protect the shaft and yes thos two could be seperate pieces...

    Nice. Wouldn't the top-spike be quite useful versus mounted opponents? Specifically, heavily armored knights?

    • @medievalreview
      @medievalreview  7 лет назад +2

      The top spike is useful, but it is relatively short compared to other pole arms. I feel that this weapon is more heavily focused on the hammer portion, and in that regard it works well.

    • @Chaosism
      @Chaosism 7 лет назад +1

      This is just me speculating, but would a longer spike really help snag and dismount an opponent any more than the shorter spike on this weapon? Also, since the weapon is more massive than many polearms with top-spikes, wouldn't that increase the risk of bending a longer spike in the case that a bad swing (from slightly too far away) resulted in only clipping the target with the top spike rather than the hammer head?

    • @medievalreview
      @medievalreview  7 лет назад +6

      It's not so much about snagging an opponent as it is being able to drive deep. Its a rather fat top spike which my guess means that it take move effort to slip into armour joints.
      you are correct that you might bend the top spike, but I doubt that is too likely. But I think that it really comes down to the hammer being the focus of this weapon.

    • @Chaosism
      @Chaosism 7 лет назад +1

      Right - I agree that the hammer is the focus of the weapon. No contest, there. Thank you for your responses. :)

    Have you seen their venetician warhammer? How big is the head and is it as durable as this one in the video?

  • @Yeknodathon
    @Yeknodathon 7 лет назад +2

    Looking at one of them on a table is alarming. Advancing towards many of them in a formation ready to receive the advance and expected to engage.. crikey.
    The aesthetics are interesting, as if to constrain and form the sheer brutality of the thing.. sort of gives it a tension?

  • @kleinjahr
    @kleinjahr 7 лет назад

    Could use a butt spike or at least a cap. Which would protect the end of the shaft from damage and allow for butt thrusts to an opponent's throat or face.

    is italian different from german? weren't they under the holy roman empire which is german?

    • @akatsukami9578
      @akatsukami9578 7 лет назад +1

      The allegiance of the Italian states to the Empire was purely nominal. The two cultures and languages were always completely different.

    • @AGermanFencer
      @AGermanFencer 7 лет назад +2

      North italy was most of the middle ages. But culturally those are two (or more for that matter) different things.

    • @neutronalchemist3241
      @neutronalchemist3241 7 лет назад

      For much of the middle age the power of the Holy Emperor had been purely nominal even in Germany, where the prince-electors held practically independent states. The detachment of the Italian "comuni" (city - states) from the Empire was even bigger, and their right to self-determination had been formally recognized in the Peace of Constance of 1183, signed after the Lombard League defeated the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa at Legnano, granting to the Italian states an indipendence that lasted until the Italian wars of the XVI century.

    Donating? "Lent" (as in the conjugation of "to lend") is the word you're looking for.
    (not borrowed, BTW. You borrowed it. He lent it)
    Donating involves transferral of ownership. If it was donated, it'd be yours.
    Lending involves allowing temporary use, whilst still retaining the ownership.

    • @Chaosism
      @Chaosism 7 лет назад

      Certainly, he scared me at first when I heard donate, but the point that he's trying to make pretty clear regardless of the semantics. ;P

    • @ZarlanTheGreen
      @ZarlanTheGreen 7 лет назад

      Sure, he did make his meaning clear, by making additional rambling and awkward explanations, but...

    • @Chaosism
      @Chaosism 7 лет назад

      Yeah, I understand your point. It seemed like it was rushed and not rehearsed or planned out enough. At least regarding the finer details like that.

  • @Tearjargon

    So is it officially a warhammer, a polehammer or a pollaxe?

    • @douglassmith4582
      @douglassmith4582 7 лет назад +1

      My understanding is that back in the time of the original they weren't to fussed whether you called it a War-hammer or a Pole-hammer because it is both. Today people tend to classify it as a Pole-hammer so there isn't any confusion with the shorter version. As to calling it a Poll-axe it isn't relay correct, though some people do, because it doesn't have an Axe blade. Hope this helps.

    • @ZarlanTheGreen
      @ZarlanTheGreen 7 лет назад

      It's clearly a pollaxe ...and probably also a warhammer.
      As to polehammer... I don't think that's a word.

    • @ZarlanTheGreen
      @ZarlanTheGreen 7 лет назад

      +Douglas Smith A pollaxe doesn't have to have an axe blade. There are plenty of pollaxes, that don't have one and which were called pollaxes, in period, and have continued to be called such, to the present day.

    • @ZarlanTheGreen
      @ZarlanTheGreen 7 лет назад +1

      +Bartman Jones AFAIK "Bec de Corbin" refers to pretty much any pollax that has a spike. As such, the one in the video would certainly qualify
      ...but that doesn't make it any less of a pollax or warhammer.

    Arms and Armour (the czechs, not the americans) make more beautiful and cheaper polearms. Their daggers are beautiful aswell in part. Their swords and armour are hideously ugly though ^^

  • @ZarlanTheGreen
    @ZarlanTheGreen 7 лет назад +1

    Decoration was not that extremely rare, with warhammers and pollaxes. They were the weapons of the wealthy, after all. Most polearms were the weapons of the masses, but not these.

    You seem to be hitting a bit to far away, in your tests. You're hitting the back of the "head", rather than the "head". In fact, you seem to be mainly hitting the helmet, with the pole.
    You should maybe have tried getting used to the range a bit, before getting to the test, proper.

    Uh, no, it's not easy to pierce quality plate armor. The only scenario in which I can picture the back spike on this weapon going through any good plate is if you were charging at your opponent on a horse.
