For power cores you should primarily spend them on energy refreshes and node refreshes in order to farm materials, gold and character shards more quickly. The first 4 refreshes are worth 50 cores each, and that's where most people stop. Avoid spending them to open orbs or to buy anything from the store that's worth power cores! They have the worst value for cores. Also, I don't know if you haven't unlocked Arena yet but it's very important to invest in a team that wins there because it's going to be your primary source of power cores.

The similarity between this game and Marvel Avengers Alliance is actually crazy. I myself started this game years after MAA's shutdown and finally got back into it. And I used to watch you everyday during the MAA days... it's good to see you playing this game as well.

Sinnister 6 and defender would be the great. For defender you can build the shadowland (elektra and daredevil + need white tiger and moon knight) and heroes for hire (luke cage and iron fist + need colleen wing and misty knight).
I am going into Dark Dimension 2 soon. Don't go for Dark Dimension 1 first. You get to unlock Ultron, and it will make it easier. He spawns more Ultron's
