Have the regular, non-TW, 57/66 set in my Schecter Hellraiser Hybrid, and they are probably my favorite pickups. Backing the volume off can get some great vintage sounding tones too. Extremely versatile.
I have an Omen Extreme fr. This is exactly the post I wanted to see. Thanks.
I have same thing. Do you have the PT version? Ultra Violet?
@@poorbrokeguitarist I have the C-6, Strat style. I love the Schecter PT too though, I have the PT Fastback with filtertrons.
I have the Hellraiser FR-S 7
i generally like EMGs and i recently bought a schecter hellraiser hybrid c7 with the "H" (non splittable) version of 57/66 assuming to eventually switch to Fishman Fluence one day.
No way, i was so surprised!
After few hours of playing i decided too keep it, really amazing stuff.
The 57/66 set is just so good
I just purchased a PT7 Hellraiser Hybrid last month and the 57/66 combo sounds great.
I have a Fluence Tosin Abasi set .. but I’m curious of the 57/66tw set .. wonder how they compare
Definitely a different EMG tone using the split! I really want to check them out in one of my guitars. Incredible versatility. Really appreciate you making this review, covering all the sounds.
I already wanted the 57/66 set in my next 7 string but now I just want it more !!! Great review Trey ! :)
Thanks Buddy - exactly what I was looking for when investigating these pick-ups: Tone samples of split/unsplit/distorted/clean/crunch sounds! Excellent stuff, keep it up!
2:17:
You're not actually coil tapping or coil splitting ...
10 seconds later 2:27:
With that in mind let's coil tap the bridge pickup
Lol, I think he should have said it is not like a traditional coil tapping coil. I like some of EMGs more modern sounding pickups from what I have heard and even the cleans have surprised me. I might get some of emgs newer ones in my dream electric guitar I might have one day. You want proof that some of there modern like emg pickups that can have great tone with clean stuff, I think you should check out chris letchford's album Lightbox. I was surprised that he used EMGs on that album.
I think we all understood what he meant 🥳
So many people talk shit about EMGs but they sound absolutely killer! 🤘🏻🎸
Jakuss565 absolutely! A true plug-and-play without soldering and those pesky ‘voices’
Still enjoying my 81/85 combo in my Jackson, just learn to EQ
Because many people are morons.
I used to be a hardcore Seymour Duncan loyalist and actively talked shit about EMGs until I decided to just drop the bias and give them a fair shot, especially after I found out that everything is completely solderless.
Currently have an H3/H2 combo in my Jackson KEXQ Kelly and a 57/66 combo in my Jackson SL7Q Soloist, both have an AB220 clean boost with the volume position swapped to where the tone would be, AB220 replaces the tone.
My next guitar is going to be through Sweetwater’s custom shop with the 57/66 combo, AB220 clean boost and stainless steel Super Jumbo frets.
Full EMG convert here, and I’m so glad I made the jump. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸
I seen a video of an SG with this same pickups and they sounded phenomenal. I'm thinking of buying those for my SG copy.
I have this set in my esp eii horizon and love the tonal characteristics. And I'm typically a Seymour Duncan guy, I like these more.
I wish active pickup companies like EMG and Fishman would make pickups with Alnico 8 magnets. It's always either Alnico V or Ceramic. I like Alnico 8 the best though.
If you want an active pickup with a different magnet, Seymour Duncan has the Duality pickups which have Alnico 2 magnets, and the EMG Fat 55 neck pickup is Alnico 2 too.
"a little bit death metal, a little bit jazz" greatest guitar ever!
I just bought a set for my new LP Standard. I was debating doing it. So glad I did now
Ive been looking for this pick ups all over can you tell me where did you find them for 7 string
This was an excellent showcase of their versatility. I actually mostly use clean for some post-punk and dark psychedelic stuff, and I’ve been wanting to mess with active pickups a bit more. I have a guitar with an 81 bridge and I loved how it cuts through, but wanted something with more versatility for when I’m doing more subtle things. You just sold a pair of these for EMG.
Thanks for doing this. Looking at getting a LTD M-1000 purple fade with these in it. I know the 81/85 combo well but hadn't heard of these. This was a huge help! Btw - your guitar looks bad ass!
I have them in my ESP LTD TE-1000. Same pick ups that Ben Weinman of Dillinger uses. They sound amazing. Good heavy tone with awesome clarity.
Ben used 81/85 and now uses Fishmans
I think in going to buy the same guitar you are talking about , the black natural burst one, but i dont know about the pick ups i always wanted fishmans which makes me unsure, how do you think the pickups in that guitar compares to fishmans?
Have the TW set in my ESP Eclipse, they're wicked.
Viper II ?
Blue natural fade Eclipse!
The EMG 57/66 are the most underrated pickups on the market. People are all about Fluences these days but honestly the moderns are just a cleaner/tighter 81/85 set. These are more balanced, less shrill. When I got my EVH 5150III I had to get rid of my 81/85 because it sounded horrible with my new rig. I checked the online reviews and videos of basically every pickup and thought the 57/66 sounded surprisingly better than the Fishmans. Got 2 sets for my ESPs, never regretted since
I’ve been looking for a while for new pickups for a les Paul, and I think this made my decision a little easier. This r very beautiful and full sounding. These r awesome!
Just got mine in the mail after a fantastic ebay bid. Can't wait to get them mounted up and start playing.
10:40 LORD ABOVE that is the lead sound I've been looking for!
Just bought a set. So impressed, they seem to be perfect for me
what is the model of the 7-string set? I didn't even find it on the EMG website. thank you friend
Crazy amount of different tones!!! Love it!!!
Dude, what would you prefere? a ESP LTD EC-1001T CTM with EGM 57TW and 66TW or a Charvel DK24 HH with passive Seymour Duncan shred and tremolo bridge?
Checking out an LTD-EC1000 with these installed. Sound pretty versatile to my ears. The neck is 66TW and the bridge is 57F.
Very helpful demo/review. Thanks!
best review of those I've seen
Sweet been waiting for this set to come out I have the old 81tw 89r set used from the early 90s and the bridge pickup is really week plus I love that brushed metal look.
Did you get a chance to swap out your 81tw and 89r set for this 57 66 dual mode set? If so, how do they compare? Thanks in advance for your time!
@@easyryder2oo4 don't have them yet sry
Just bought an ESP E-II Horizon NT II with these in it. Was gonna swap for Seymour Duncan Dualitys but I honestly love these a lot. Gonna keep them!
excellent demo. I just got a set of these for one of my guitars,.... my 1st set of active pups, 1st set of EMG's...
not quite but almost visibly excited.
Great demo Trey!
That middle position with both split......that was metal as BALLZ!!!!!
His face at 1:17, you know he loves them.
My Washburn has the 81 - 85 set.
They are ok , but pretty much geared mainly for one thing. The 57 - 66TW set sounds good. Versatility in a guitar / pickups. Is always a good thing...
These sound amazing but I'm wondering if there's a way to wire it so that you can switch it to have the humbucker and single coil going at the same time.. 🤔
That's a nice Gibson you got there. 👌
Lol
shiet...
Damn fluffs been working on his chops!!
Good demo, used to have an artist deal back in the day, had a set of 81/85 and 60/85, looking to get back into actives but with more versatility. This set looks like a good choice.
Thanks man I’m sold getting a set now
I think it's best review of those pickups
I hope more people use Single Coil tones for heavy music in the future. Nick Johnston uses single coils. Sure some people may think single coils have too much treble for heavy music, but you could edit how much treble a pickup has with eq settings anyways. Those Pickups are sick. I find it interesting that the tones you were using with the clean channel were not super dark or warm even with the bridge pickup and those are the kind of tones that some rock and metal players use when playing cleans.
I use the single coil bridge tone when layering metal rhythm tracks. Gives just amount of cut without sounding crazy
So if i want to swap out my 85/81 with these, will it be a direct fit? Are the sizes the same?
Emg web site says 0.22" taller.
I think I just found new pickups for my guitar mod.
They sound amazing....!
Really good review, thanks. I was wondering if you tried these with any fuzz pedals at all? I was thinking about getting these but I play a lot of doom metal and heard EMG's don't go well with fuzz.
Sound Great! Can you get a good jangle in open chords ? Rickenbackerish? Bridge in clean? Building a semi holllow and considering these. or might you recommend something else.
I often end up buying guitars with humbuckers that coil split but when I actually play them, I never split the coils.
For anyone who has tried both, is this set in full humbucker mode identical in sound to the original set? Sometimes, new features come with unwanted changes...
GaijinMo I was actually wondering the same thing....
7 strang EMG thang triple tap 🤘🏽
Nisssssssssce 🦛
awesome review, I'm sold .........gonna try them on a new build
I’m sold on these, I have a Paul allender model Prs that has the emg 81/89 coil split ability combo but been thinking about putting these ones in that guitar 😁
wonder if these would fit in a tele (which was originally an HH w/ split coil model)?
85X with the 24V mod is my go to
This lower horn looks like a bad cutout by a 5 year old
Unravel I think it’s meant to be like rusty cooley’s sig w/ the super crazy deep cutout
Oh no, cannot unsee
really? I dont see it...
@@giggitygoo2181 Rusty left Dean and moved onto OrmsbyGuitars, so this is basically Rusty's sig without his name and some tweaks.
agreed, I think it could be an inch or so shorter
Where can I Buy the set with the changes of humbucker and single cool mode?
Any idea which single in the EMG lineup the 66TW is based on?
I emailed them to ask them what single coil to put in the middle position of a HSH configuration, and they said the SAV is the most similar to the single coil mode
Just put in an order for the 57/66 set for my seven string, didn’t want the coil split version though. Is there any difference in tone between the two?
Update: doesn’t seem to be. This pickup set is KILLER in my rig. It’s going in ALL of my guitars 🤘
These 7 string versions don’t appear to be on EMGs site. I really want a 66-7TWH for my Jeff loomis Schecter!
Did you ever get them? It’s hard to find sets on their website!
@@toemasmeems nope. They’re still not listed on EMG’s site!
@@buhimoth uhhhh I’m gonna pull the trigger on a 57/66 set for my Keith Merrow mkiii standard,
I already really enjoy my Nazgul but am craving EMGS for the way look... I know that’s dumb sounding but they look so clean
@@toemasmeems the 57/66 set is pretty sweet
So I like the idea of active pickups. right now I have a few Jim Root guitars converted to a single Vol, single Hum. I am just using the EMG 60. While it works and sounds awesome in the bridge, for some stuff its still a little "metaly/harsh" I play pop punk, but occasionally like to get a little heavier, (some called it easycore??). Falling in Reverse, Hit the Lights, ADTR, etc. I used to play the SD JB of course that pickup is very versatile. Would the 57/66 be that edgy pop punk pickup that can also go a little heavier without getting too insane/muddy like the 81/85 or 81/60 etc?
Man have not seen EMG In mainstream for a while
How?
EMG is literally the most popular active pickups though. Fishman too.
@@hippyhobo6285
Everyone has jumped on the fishman bandwagon. You don't see much EMG love anymore
@@zxexrxox that's true. I don't blame them myself, I personally prefer the Fishman over EMGs, but the only EMGs I don't like are the active ones (except for this set in this video). Still, EMG is immensely popular for a reason, and I think they'll be a staple in heavy music for awhile longer.
They don't seem to have them on the EMG shop. I really like them, great video, lots of examples on their modes. Can you put the link where I can get them?
Bought these didn't know how tall they ACTUALLY were and ended up having to carve our my guitar a bit 😳 sounds heavenly and hellish if that's a possibility 🤣🤣 definitely don't regret them lol
These pickups sound awesome. I have them on my EC-1000FR. Only problem is my neck pup are a tad too high even when adj screw is fully lose. Considering getting the non TW 66.
I haven’t removed the neck pup fully yet to see what’s going on, but it seems like the top layer of the guitar is not symmetrically arched, so that the pup frame ends up slightly tilted. Left side of pup is fine, right side is too high. Playing frets 18 and above on high E, it touches. Good input on the longer screw, I’ll check it out. Thanks!
BTW, I expected not to like the EMGs at all, but I dig them.
Are the humbuck modes the same specs as the non TW versions?
Very Lone Pineish man. luv em!!! great versatility.
I love that guitar. What brand is it, if you don't mind me asking
He literally said it a few seconds in
Where can I purchase these for my 7 string guitar???
I prefer this rather than 81combo and they hate me of that, my band mate got 81combo in his esp and i got this 57 in my Ibanez and i really like the sounds the dark and dynamic and even its darker than 81combo it can handle the diminished chord or the awkward chord.
I'm searching for this set on 7 chords as you have installed but I can't found the model to buy it. Anyone can tell me where I can found it?
What if you have a plain guitar?
That guitar looks amazing and sounds very good. I wonder about the quality, DEAN was one of the first companies to build in South Korea with high standards of quality, now I can see they're building in Indonesia (which is playable but their finish are usually terrible) .
I’ve never had very good luck with Dean unfortunately
A B Cars N’ Guitars me neither man, the guitar was literally broken
My ML Select 7 from Indo was solid, sold it when I got a Schecter Merrow from South Korea though. Was just more resonant and a less goofy shape
Those pickups fahucks!🚀
The bridge Single Coil sounds really tight and defined on the picking attack
Best looking Dean IMO contrary to the hate in the comments
an realy interesting thing is those EMG 66/ 57 are more likely for ten's gauge and they are not just for metal but are truly melodic for other genres but chugga is the only thing some do can hear :(
Cool tap? Or clip split? Because when mentioned the humbucker can do both humbucker and single coil isn't that splitting the coil? Hence coil split?
there is a humbucker and a separate single in the pickup, and the "coil tap" just switches between these two
@@cardosyou are right about the first part, however it’s not not “coil tapping”, if you are switching to a whole different pickup. Coil tapping is specifically for making single coils higher output.
can someone explain the difference between "activating a 2nd coil" and "coil splitting".. surely that's the same thing
Wish I could find these anywhere for sale.
Why can’t ya find em?
The 7 string version of these are nowhere
@@R3dbudd yeah this might be a late reply but i asked emg about them last year: they said theyre not actually out yet but they planned to release them this year. and they were actually ready to sell me a set for 20$ more than the 6-string set! if you want them you should shoot them a message and see if they still do that
@@ylimakko9917 is that missing a zero lol? 20 or 200?
Beautiful guitar 🧐😍😍
I’ve got a les paul with an 81 in the bridge. The thing i don’t like is that it doesn’t sound very open at all. Almost as if someone has thrown a blanket over the speaker each time i switch to that guitar. The sound seems very “distant” kind of thing. The tone in this video is awesome. Does anybody think i would like the 57 if i wasn’t too keen on the 81? Thanks
Either of the pickups demoed here or a 89x. What kind of music do you play and amp?
Nicest dean I’ve ever seen
Inner or outer coils split?
I have this guitar w/ 6 strings and a tune-o-matic. Same p/p potentiometers, but a 5-way switch. Tons of tones, but wtf are positions 2/4 even doing electronically I have no idea lol 😭
Nice vid thx.
1st Dean i've ever thought was decent
Dean sucks ass they ship broken ass guitars
1:12-1:27
General Optimus Prime's Theme
I have this dean in the 6 string I like the PUs more nuance than 85/81 set
thw TW versions never sounded as good as the non TW versions to my ears, the 81TW sounds nothing like the real 81 for example, A-B them and was really shocked.
Yeah, it's a pretty big difference, relatively speaking. And I see the same between my TW and regular 57/66 sets. Big difference even in output. I'd describe the non-TW version I have as "inspiring" and the TW as "... ok it has some similar characteristics for sure... But doesn't drive the amp as much, it feels more plasticky to play through, somehow... Meh".
Pair of these came equiped in my 1001-ctm pretty decent
I guess these aren't for modders since they won't fit any regular guitar...
Modders wouldn't have any issues because they MODIFY THIER GUITARS. FUCK. THINK.
Trey can you please answer the questions in your Udemy's RelationShapes course? It seems neglected..
Sepcifically, My question is - how do I play the same mode (connect shapes) all over the fretboard horizontally (left right) and not just up & down?
I have a 57/66 set in a LP Custom. I like the 66 but I’m not really digging the 57. I predominantly go for a moderate to high gain bridge tone with a lot of pick attack. I’ve primarily used an EMG 81 for almost 2 decades now, though I’ve recently started getting away from those in favor of Fishman KSE pups which are fantastic and perfect for my playing style. But the 57 has a weird artificial top end to it that reminds me of a Boss DS-1 with its tone control turned up too high, and the low end is a lot looser than I’d prefer. I think I’m gonna pull them out and give the Fluence Classics a try.
Try lowering them from the strings. I thought they had the same problem until I did that, now they are my favorite pickups.
Bought a set and the absolutely will not fit in my SG. too tall
1:12 Sounds pretty much like Slipknot
Humbuckers sounded great but like usual when coil "tapped" or "split" sounded thin and weak. I wish someone would figure out how to get a true single coil sound. Great demo man
Bro maybe ten years ago this is not an issue now...literally watch the video
To me they sounded best when playing leads and full humbucker cleans, in that order.
Try EMG REV set.
Imagine calling coil splitting coil tapping in 2020 when they're not the same thing.
I almost feel guilty ruining your 666 likes...
hello there
NOT coil TAP, that's just reducing the windings on the same pickup.
