The deck may seem strange with some of the numbers but one thing I’ve learned over the years is to never question Jaberwocki. Dude is a legend and genius deck creator
I’ve been kinda into running Jace and Emperor in the main deck. Little less sweepers. I think Sunfall is necessary and maybe Farewell, but Depopulate and Lockdown are sometimes okay, I run Lockdown in my side for the low to the ground aggro, and 1 Depopulate in the main. As a control player myself, i’ve found it challenging to build a somewhat solid list
Lockdown is still good. not as good as it was a few weeks back before the adaption of cathar commando, get losts and destroy evils. But cant ignore the synergy with our own get losts! The mirror also you have to remember it cleans up mirrex guys clues and samurais i usually leave 1 copy in after sideboard even.
I love watching you and other strong players learning new decks, especially something like control where you really need to know the deck well before it starts paying off. You show that you're willing to make mistakes here and learn from them so you can make the right plays where they count. I hope there's a viable control deck when the standard pro tour comes up, I would love to see midrange squirming under the thumb of a patient control mage!
All the people saying that there are too many sweepers, have you seen current standard? Every deck outside the few combo lists is either a go wide deck or a midrange deck that gets value out of multiple bodies, the board wipes are incredibly good in this spot. It also ensures you’re not trading one for one with the bat, and allows you to put your own stuff on board with sunfall.
Well I can understand where he's coming from, he's cut his teeth originally as a control mage, started as a control mage. It's a bit unexpected given his history as a goblin guy 😂
The problem with this deck is some people grab it and have no idea of how to win with it. So games are stupidly long. Just b/c you're control doesn't mean your win con is bore everyone to tears. Definitely refreshing to see it played well.
It's very strange to see the new fact or fiction missing from these UW lists. So many games boil down to deluge or bust, I would expect 1-2 copies at a bare minimum, especially since they also affect the board.
After watching how much trouble you had with the planeswalkers, I'm glad I run Urza's Sylex in my control deck. Mine is Esper with Jace and Outrageous Robbery as my main win cons.
sounds interesting man, i tried making esper control work myself i was on 2 islands 2 plains 0 swamps, 4 fields 2 mirrex with 4 raffine's tower, restless reef, shadowy backstreet i just found i was playing to many tap lands. i ran shipwrech marsh and deserted beach in multiples and like a single shattered sanctum. But i was just not hitting sunfall on 5 like i was in UW. My mainboard black pips was like a single voidrend and a siphon insight; i was running a 3-1 split deduce and siphon insight split. And then the 2 copies of outrageous robbery. Also was also running the mainboard realmbreaker + 2 Jace main 1 jace side along side takenuma in the sideboard as the 28th land. Decks obviously the nuts vs other UW control decks, esper midrange and domain. But you lose so many points vs aggro you just have too many silly cards game 1
Not sure about Ezrim myself dies to witchstalk frenzy you always need the 6 mana first vs mono red and boros. Also gets caught out by Liliana after board vs golgari. where do you bring it in? If you got the 2 slots available i think 2x aurelia's vindicator is better they work well as a primary wincon vs aggro and midrange the way you can get both replacing each other. You get a solid edge against some players on arena as the new mechanics people dont know how to play around the interaction.
There are so many ways to play a control deck in standard and this is absolutely not one of them. There's an embarrassingly high sweeper count (why even play more than one depop it's bad in multiples), not enough spot removal, no jaces to pressure an overextend, and no real way to leverage turning the corner to actually win.
Straight up incorrect. The board wipes are so good right now, especially with esper Mid running around. My favourite list currently runs 3 temps, 1 depop, 2 sunfalls (+2 in board) and 1 farewell. Spot removal is great but you desperately need the sweepers to trade 2+ for 1, all the best spot removal is currently either overcosted or gives your opponents something. Jaces are necessary, but the wandering emporers and restless anchorages are more than enough to turn a corner once you’ve wiped your opponent to oblivion, especially woth the incubates.
Imagine believing you know more than fucking Jaber. The dudes been playing control at the highest level for an eternity. I'll take their opinion over some rando in a YT comment section 😉
@deftduelist Imagine thinking jaber isn't smart enough to keep experimenting and possibly improve on a deck for reasons that might even be similar to the YT rando you're belittling who's at least got reasons for thinking the way he does. No deck is final and metas evolve.
Man, hate seeing a good list piloted badly. Playing while steaming and interacting with the chat for hours really hurts Jim’s ability to play a deck that requires tight play like UW control. Interesting list.
This version is dogwater. Running that many wipes is hilariously bad. crokeyz has the cleanest version I've seen, but it takes a bit more skill to pilot.
Crokeyz's version didn't top8 an MTGO challenge. Crokeyz might have a version better suited for the MTGA ladder meta but the challenge/proper swiss tournament metagame (which more closely resembles paper MTG) necessitates different card choices versus what you see streamers playing in ladder.
8-9 boardwipes has been the standard for blue white control since mkm and even a lil before. Both in standard arena events as well as paper tournaments. Literally every non control deck puts a ton of bodies on the board. And even against the mirror match you wipe the emeperor, mirrex and incubator tokens.

22:41 that pause before their wedding and virtue triggers was them manually stacking it. Its messed up for everyone
I dont know why they changed it, same with brokers ascendency

Least greedy esper deck in match 1.

I am always in awe of Jim's ability to do well with control decks.

@@Guevon_PajaroGoblins is a control deck in legacy, or it was in legacy until Mind Goblin was printer.
I'm a simple mtg player. I see Jim play UW, I like the video.

Ezrim definitely gives me Dream Trawler vibes.

Jim seems to have as much fun playing control as I do playing against it

Anchorage makes a map that the protocol can tap to discount it, so you could do both
I love Ezzrim. Trying to build a rake deck around him.
🚗 beep beep 🚗
Love the soundboard
Man, you looked pained waiting for all your draw spells that never showed up in those games. Such is the life of a control player, am I right?
have you tried jeskai control yet? i like it just cause i get chandra and helix

What's the 1k Jim's practicing for?
8 sweepers is wild
Not really its standard at this point
HONK. wish i had an audience like yours for my league of legends
whats the overlay for probability for you to draw a land?
I will be copying and pasting this deck.
You’ll probably lose since the win rate is highly dependent on the pilot.

no one runs quick study. it seems ok to me
UW made me feel like the villain in my video… kinda liked it >:)

way too many sweepers lmao
Sunfall is the one card I would ban from standard
This is the worst take I‘ve heard on standard so far.

As far as I can tell, this is extremely close to the average control deck.
I think you proved his point. 1-3-4-1 is 2 too many. I also like 3-1-2-1 though
