  • I put Martin Retro Monel Nickel 012-054 acoustic guitar strings on my Michael Messer Lightning Style 0 resonator guitar. Overall, the Monel Nickel strings on this nickel-plated brass body biscuit cone guitar produce a fuller and punchier sound with better overtones, compared to an 013-056 phosphor bronze set.

    Hi Kevin,
Would these strings sound nice on a mm fidle edge? I own one so just interested for when the original strings need replacing. Nice tone and nice playing style.
    Cheers Paul

I put Martin Retros on my Taylor, and love the tone.

I have not yet tried Retro Monel strings on my Taylor 414, but will do that soon.

I use Martin Retro on my acoustics and my reso. I prefer them to Elixirs. They even sound good when they are quite old, they go through a "mature" stage rather than merely going dead.

I've pretty much given up on Elixir strings. For regular acoustic guitars I now prefer Stringjoy string made down-home by hand in Nashville, TN.

Well done and great sound. I am in contact with Michael to get one of these. I didnt decide between the MM Blues and lightning.
Are you pleased with your Lighting ?

I enjoyed the MM Lightning guitar quite a bit. I sold it to finance one of his Fiddle Edge Spider Cone guitars, which I love.

Beautiful playing. I use these strings on my gibson acoustic. Was considering putting then on my paul beard resonator.

I have these strings on my Beard Copper Mountain Round Neck and also a set on my 1977 OMI Dobro Round Neck. I love the way they sound with a spider bridge and cone.

What is the action like, especially at the first five frets?

Action on the first 5-8 frets is determnined by the nut slot carve, and this one is stock / normal. I have this resonator's bridge setup for fingerstyle, so string height at the 12th fret = 2.0mm high E and 2.8mm low E.
