"Did the agent have family? How are they?" "How's CJ taking it?" Any number of things besides going to the boogie-man of "Crime" followed by "I don't know" was horrible. Respectful silence would have been better. Such a great scene.

The underlying subtext here is that Republicans don't give a rat's ass about anyone outside their circle of rich friends. Certainly not the Secret Service, whom they think of as "the help" (according to some of Reagan's inner circle) and not the underlings like the Press Secretary. No, they're only interested in things that affect them, and their rich friends. Which is a very interesting subtext here. Almost everyone misses it.

    • @paulcolburn3855

@@lancer525 That is not the subtext here.
The underlying subtext here is that the man is too "ignorant" to have an thoughtful response to a Secret Service Agent being murdered. He is too "ignorant" as evidenced by the fact that he is a republican. If he had an intelligent, meaningful response to the President telling him that tragic news, then he would cease being a republican.
This is what Aaron Sorkin thought of the republican party. That is the subtext. You know why I say that? Because Aaron Sorkin believes that only the President (and not the Governor) has any rich friends.

    • @OptimysticPessimyst

Both wrong. It’s not about Reps or Dems in this moment. This scene portrays a candidate ill suited for the office due to his approach to the politics. He’s blissfully ignorant so that he can appear to the people as one of them and that’s why they should vote for him. They spell that out for you. His response is indicative of that almost as if he had to respond and that was his instinct because of the campaign he is running. There are and always have been politicians on both sides of the aisle that do this.
The West Wing, while being quite heavily left leaning most of the time, is an indictment of Washington and the political system and that’s what the subtext is here. Governor Richie is the side of the unengaged and the uninformed, that appears to be the every-man, and President Bartlet is the side of academic and the informed that can both alienate but assure the public in a leader. Sorkin’s writing shows both sides of this debate as it has been a tale as old as America itself. There’s a middle ground to find and the show describes and produces that middle ground in its 7 seasons while being honest and imperfect.
If you don’t believe me and want to see Sorkin write from a right-leaning perspective, watch The Newsroom. It’s even more of a mirror-thrust to the American political system from the viewpoint of those covering it and not those inside it.

Basing your vote on feeling good about the personality of a candidate (aka trusting your gut) is unconscionable. You're not voting for a cheerleader or has your same personality or your same biases...you SHOULD BE voting for their governing acumen. Long after the elected personality has proved inadequate to overcome their incapacity to govern, you are going to have to deal with the damage that they cause. this is what the Trump Era has proven. To be objective means things like skin color, who you choose to love, or what you believe in are irrelevant, as they all should be. You objectively examine what people require for equity, and don't subjectively put them in pigeonholes, doling out to only those who meet your specific, arbitrary qualifications. The notable point here is that Bartlett is TRYING to talk to the governor person-to-person, but the governor is only engaging with Bartlett as if the president were a prop of everything he dislikes. Bartlett's point about the governor being profoundly apathetic is a genuine personality trait that's very obvious to see once he mentions it. In contrast, the governor's laundry list of things he doesn't like about Bartlett are vague boilerplate buzzwords, some of which ("You're Hollywood") don't even apply to the New Hampshire-raised Bartlett. The governor doesn't even think of Bartlet as a human, he's just a symbol of the Democrat party that's in his way.

It’s a shame. Sorkin is usually a great writer until he starts lecturing and getting pompous. We could have had a great scene, awesome dialogue (which Sorkin is capable of). But Sorkin doesn’t like conservatives, and refuses to write for them. It’s a pity he’s so intolerant and exclusive, but hardly a surprise. Writing the other side’s viewpoint isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Imagine how great it would be if we got that!

We did get that.... we got ainsley, the lawyer guy with donna, and mathew perry.
This isn't about conservatives this is about a jackass....

@@TheBloodypimp Ok, so translation: way later on, Sorkin gave a few token roles as right leaning folks to other folks. You’re absolutely right, this IS about a jackass, question is, are we talking about Sorkin, Bartlet, or both?
