37 years ago I was a 16 year old Aussie exchange student in central Illinois in the US. I discovered a ‘69 650 Triumph under a tarp in my host father’s farm shed. He hadn’t ridden her in years and said if I could get it going I could ride it when ever I liked so long as I stayed off the main roads. No license of course. A country boy from South Australia having grown up riding and working on bikes I got her running straight away. Through that summer I rode her everywhere, exploring back roads all around Danville. One time after a full day working for my host father re-roofing a barn on another of his farms I took the long way home. It was a beautiful balmy mid-western summer evening, the sun going down, fire flies dancing in and out of the corn fields that flanked the road, the warm wind tugging tears of joy from the corners of my eyes as I wound that old trumpy out to well over 100mph. I ride because there is a sense of freedom about riding a bike. We've got millions of miles of roads to explore together and enjoy. We all ride for different reasons. But the one reason we all ride is for the feeling of freedom. There is a sense of freedom about riding that you just don't get from anything else. Wars have been fought over it in the past. As we all know.
What is this sense of freedom only motorcyclists can experience? Not being a smart ass or anything, I just don’t understand. In so many situations, they’re the absolute worst tool for the job. While the fuel economy might be better/gallon, we’re still talking about a 3 gallon tank on average? Even at 50 mpg, we’re talking 150 mile range on average? Getting soaked in the rain, roasting in the heat? I get the open air ride, but a convertible sounds more sensible. So what is it about putting yourself at such a disadvantage and through hell? Image is the only thing I can possibly think of

Those coastal twisties look like a lot of awesomeness ! And there were a couple long straights in the mix to keep it mixed up along the ride …perfect road
From the mid to late 1980’s to early 2000’s I road daily ( when able to ) for some reason I went the next 20 years after that era getting a pit in my gut every spring ,telling my self “next year”, year after year ……this past Xmas season I found myself with a lil extra cash and luckily my mind went straight to “ find a bike “ instead of to “I should pay off a credit card or some other bill” … bikes got expensive in the last twenty years ,so $5k got me an ‘09 FZ1 that’s “ been well ridden” for 30k miles already ..and it was in at least one “slide” type accident , but held up fairly well considering …bottom line , it turned out to be about the perfect bike for me ! Nice enough looking ,in the style I love (standard upright seating inline 4) and fast enough, handles well , etc etc …., but not too nice that I have to worry about daily cleaning after a ride ,or that if I forget to chain it it’ll disappear immediately… got lucky on those fronts and it took me a minute to realize I didn’t need anything nicer ,faster , cleaner ( though I’m still always looking 😂) ….but now all I’m doing is slowly going through maintenance and doing my best to keep it running great ,but , most of all… I feel like I’m living again finally !
Now look what the algorithm dragged in today. I’m glad I watched this, it’s very beautiful and relaxing and the guy riding has excellent taste… yes I’m riding a RE Classic 500 too. 😊
A visually stunning (yet understated) philosophical evocation… I ride old-school thumpers on the gravel rimlands of Southern Africa and I find your thinking strongly resonant…
This says the RAW EMOTION behind it. People always ask… “are they dangerous? … YES, but so is living LIFE! And we do that, also, so 🤷🏾♂️✊🏾. Fly safe 🙏🏾

I bought my first motorcycle while I was in college back in 1975. It was a Kawasaki 100cc street & trail in order to get around my college town in Daytona Beach. I sold it a year later in order to purchase a car. I started riding again in 2009 on a Harley Nightster and that is the main means of transportation for me. I only drive my trucks in order to carry a heavy load. I love riding.

your vid touched my heart....least to say. Because, more or less, I feel the same level of freedom, nirvana when ever I go on a ride on my RE Classic RE BS 3 variant. Had been riding since 50 years or so, .... In a way, the Motor cycle makes soul connection and instantly takes you into a nirvana yet fully awake and reflexive to the road conditions. Very difficult to articulate,,,, you have so beautifully conveyed and picturized. Wishing you many miles of smiles.
I really love your comment about pursuing "immaculate ideology," and how leaning into the fractures in life is the best we can do. And how life is happening to us, all around us, all the time.
I drove from Durban to Cape Town and back several times in the late 70’s hunting waves in a VW van. I’d love to go back and do it on a bike, at least the garden route🙌🏻
When I ride there are a few things I love, riding fast, riding slow, riding at my pace, stopping to look around. Taking a break from the mundane. My one supervisor said "thereperist", well I don't need a therapist, my bike is my "thereperie"
Yeah this was filmed in a few places near Cape Town on the R44 coastal road and on some roads near George. Definitely consider doing that, it'll be a trip of a lifetime especially if you leave from Namibia down to Cape Town!
That is therapeutic. I promise you, I never expected this to feature a classic 500. I was going to drone on about how my classic 500 gave me those exact sensations etc, but, no need....🙂
Nice one, brother!
All thanks to you!🤘

Fantastic job and a pleasure to watch.
" Forever Two Wheels!" A Mantra to live by....great work Sir!
Thanks so much! I'm glad to see you liked the film!
This is a beautiful film on so many levels ..loved the narration and the shots and of course the amazing music..what a great way to spend ten minutes ..thanks and best wishes ..

Beautiful piece of work, on the very roads I grew up on, so many years ago. Thank you for taking me back, and touching my heart. .
Thanks so much for watching! Sure is a beautiful place!
Beautifully done! You nailed it exactly! Ride safe and keep up the great work!
Great work and very thoughtful monologue!!
Beautiful cinematography ! Amazing job. You deserve more credit and subs!
That's really kind of you! Thank you so much for watching and the kind words.
great production work on this film. I like the part of " Lean into it " that's what I'm trying to do. My son got me back into riding motor cycles again. i rode as kid but stopped when I moved to California. Now living in NJ and being much older it's a great way to Lean into Life. Enjoyed your film. Thank you.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment. Really appreciate it and I'm glad to learn you're riding again!
The more I watch the more I love.. Thank you for your short-film. I’m a rider and I thoroughly enjoyed!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the film.
Loved it! Inspiration to get the old Ariel back on the road!!
So glad to hear you loved the film. Thanks for watching!
Now look what the algorithm dragged in today. I’m glad I watched this, it’s very beautiful and relaxing and the guy riding has excellent taste… yes I’m riding a RE Classic 500 too. 😊
Thank you so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. It's a fantastic bike!
Why I Ride ? Riding is one of the rare practises where I am completely by myself, fully concentrated and focused on the Moment. Love it. ❤
Absolutely right! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Greetings from Stuttgart Solitude histrorical Race Track 😊
A visually stunning (yet understated) philosophical evocation…
I ride old-school thumpers on the gravel rimlands of Southern Africa and I find your thinking strongly resonant…
Really appreciate your comment and glad to see you've resonated so strongly with Why I Ride. Thank you!
This says the RAW EMOTION behind it. People always ask… “are they dangerous? … YES, but so is living LIFE! And we do that, also, so 🤷🏾♂️✊🏾. Fly safe 🙏🏾
Love the multi level highway bars. Thank you for your video!
Hey I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!🤘
The more I watch the more I love. Thank you!
Incredible, astonishing film. Quality that rarely can be seen on RUclips. I give you my compliments on this short film, and to you I gift my sub. May you have a great day.
Really appreciate the feedback and kind words. Thank you so much!
Great film making. Thank you for your craft. Need to make you a Brutalist in meadows far beyond the normal ones.
Just a throttle of what will roar. I can feel it.
This isn't a video. This is a film.
Brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words!
Beautiful film brother and inspirational words. I too ride for the very same reason!
Awesome short, like the Enfield. Please check steering head bearing play. The front wheel seems to move more fore and aft then up and down...
This just popped up as a suggested video and I am glad I watched it. Very nice. Thanks for sharing two years ago
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! Really appreciate the support and glad you liked it!
@@fredvanleeuwen …loved it! It resonates
It puts life into a perspective that only those with the gift of riding will understand.
You made me cry, i love it !
Wow thank you so much!
Beautiful film. Beau full scenery! Gorgeous road!!!! Nice bike. I've had my eyes on Royal Enfield since taking my safety class.
I ride a BMW F800ST. I ride because it sets my soul free. Brings me back into my body and releases my mind from all the BS that settles in on you. Never give it up.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the feedback and kind words. Your reason is a great reason for riding and that F800 is a lovely bike!
Thanks for this. Now I am in the UK, I don't get to ride that incredible Rooi Els road anymore. Thanks for reviving those memories. Love the film and fully identify with why you/we ride. All the best. Adrian
I feel the same since also moving to the UK. Miss that coastal road and all its twists and turns. Glad you like the video and thanks so much for watching, Adrian!
This is beautifully narrated, Fred. Best of luck!
Thank you so much, Ray! Really appreciate the watch and taking the time to comment!
Never thought this would be local, then I saw those Twisties.. hell yeah! nicely done dude, beautiful message.
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words! Those twists and turns around the R44 coastal road's a dream!
Still riding daily, 50 years. Zx9r for last 20, Gpz900r for 5 years. Z900 for 10 years before that 😂🎉😁 Gotta love the classics!
Brother! What an amazing job!! 👍🙏
That's fantastic to hear! Yeah you just can't beat the classics! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Really appreciate that!
Seems like you LOVE your Kawasaki's.
Looks a little like my list of Bikes.
Always had a soft spot for Kawasaki.
Like yourself, still Riding just not as often as you.

Not Alive Without a BIKE 🙂👍
@@weldmachine since I spotted a Z1 outside a local pub, it was kawasaki for me. I have owned others but I always look to kwaks. So many amazing, innovative machines. Not to mention, the unmistakable 2 stroke triples!!
Nice film! Wich helmet do you wear? Best Regards
your vid touched my heart....least to say.
Really glad my film resonated with you! Thanks so much for watching & keep on riding!
Very well done. Enjoyed that perspective.
Great cinematography! Gorgeous bike! 👍
She certainly is a beautiful bike! Thanks so much for watching!
Because each person has a different reason to ride, that’s a great title for the short-film!
Magnificent. Excruciatingly beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Really appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
I really love your comment about pursuing "immaculate ideology," and how leaning into the fractures in life is the best we can do. And how life is happening to us, all around us, all the time.
I could immediately see this was Clarens Drive. Great video!
It is indeed! Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey, it’s amazing picturisation….. feel like riding my self actually…..really wonderful…..it’s a great.
Really appreciate the kind words! Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment.
Absolutely incredible edit and story!! Love it!!!!
Thank you so much for watching. Really appreciate the kind words.
Nice vid! What is the helmet/face protection you are wearing?
Am at the very edge and its only this great creation that keeping me from not falling
Strength, friend.
@@ttentionpls thank 🙏 you
Been riding more than 50 years. When I started, I had to get back and forth, class to work to home and start again. Now, I go, I just go.
I drove from Durban to Cape Town and back several times in the late 70’s hunting waves in a VW van. I’d love to go back and do it on a bike, at least the garden route🙌🏻
Love the drive from Durban to Cape Town, but that drive on a bike would be epic! Thanks so much for watching!
I liked this one. I'll try and make my own version soon.
Beautiful! Thank you. You are gifted.
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
Loved that helmet, what is it???
Greetings!! but what camera do you use for this beautiful video quality? Thank you!!
Hey thanks for watching! I used the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4k to film this project.
Grazie gentilissimo!!!!
Beautifully made movie. Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing this movie with us. Cheers.

I'm applying this to my EUC riding.
Brilliant, simply brilliant!! 👍👍
Thanks so much!
Beautiful film and yes ride to feel alive.
Criminally under-viewed
Thanks for watching! If you have a moment please share it with your friends
When I ride there are a few things I love, riding fast, riding slow, riding at my pace, stopping to look around. Taking a break from the mundane. My one supervisor said "thereperist", well I don't need a therapist, my bike is my "thereperie"
Beautiful.
What helmet do you use?
I am also interested, seems perfekt!
Nice bike... great film. That's exactly why I ride.
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate that!
Well done man! Absolutely captures the feeling bru!
Thank you very much! Really appreciate it!
Fluidic emotions, philosophy realised on wheels, that nonchalant detachment … I can feel it.
I'm glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful. What helmet are you wearing? Looks modern yet classic.
You should upload more
I'm hoping to later this year. 😊
@@fredvanleeuwen Well isn't that nice 😁
Outstanding and highly inspiring!!!! (PS: on a more down to earth & hedonistic perspective....where is your fabulous scarf from?)
Superb mate. Can i use a small part of this video on my page. Will give you credit on that....
Outstanding brother.
Thank you!
Nicely done. I just subscribed. I have been trying to say this in one of my videos but I just scrap them because they don't reach my standard.
This looks like cape town. I really want to do a trip with my father from namibia to cape town.
Yeah this was filmed in a few places near Cape Town on the R44 coastal road and on some roads near George. Definitely consider doing that, it'll be a trip of a lifetime especially if you leave from Namibia down to Cape Town!
I find that I don’t fear death anymore. Riding is the only way that I know I’m not crazy.
Ride on! Thanks for watching🤘
That is therapeutic. I promise you, I never expected this to feature a classic 500. I was going to drone on about how my classic 500 gave me those exact sensations etc, but, no need....🙂
So glad you're able to relate! Thanks for watching!
Please upload more!
Hi Paul, thanks for watching! I'm currently working on a new project so keep an eye on the channel in the coming months 😀
