Lovely shots and video of the hawks. The Robin enjoying bath time with water flying about you could almost hear him or her (not sure) singing for joy. Terrific.

Fabulous footage of the sparrowhaks Mike! In The Netherlands we usually use bold pigeons to avoid the messy feathers and we screw part of them onto a big branch or a log to get clean pictures as they are higher up. The setting on the ground usually gets quite messy.

Thanks Mike for another great video. I tried Alan McFadyens hide in Dumfries a couple of years ago for Sparrowhawk. Was there all day but only got one visit. Plenty of other birds though, Jays, Woodpecker etc. Must try David’s as I’m only an hour or so away.
I wish Ilfords still did black and white film.... bet the colour contrast in the feathers would pop out
Another cracking video Mike, thank you for taking the time to produce it and share the experience. One questions immediately springs to mind - what, if anything can be done to make sure that the birds don't take the bait with their backs towards you as although such shots MAY have their merit in some circumstances, the vast majority of "keepers" would be those shots with the bird's head in view - straight on, from the side or somewhere in between.
Birds will face the wind mostly so that can be something to be aware of when setting up. Squeaking the lips can get a bird to turn, but needs to be done gradually and finally just putiing the time in. He who stays the longest gets the shot.
When I take pics of birds I place a food source in between the trees I think the bird will perch in to recce the scene, and where I will be taking photos from. I place a branch right next to the food source in between the food source and the recce trees.
So, the bird lands in the trees to check the place out. When it’s comfortable it flies in to the branch I placed next to the food source. When it lands on the branch, the food source is right next to it and I’m 3m away the other side of the food. Therefore the bird has to look in my direction as that’s where the food is,. Often they hop down, get the food in its mouth, hop back up on the branch giving you a second chance to get another picture hopefully eating. This is an example of the results, I hope Mike doesn’t mind me placing a link, if he does I’ll happily delete the post no problem.

I have been thinking about going to some hides in UK, once the borders open up, so getting some "inside" information is very useful, thanks for sharing, Mike. Hearing about your previous travels got me curious of knowing more of the. Where you went, what you photographed, useful facts and experiences from those destination. Maybe an idea for upcoming videos? 😉
Excellent work, Mike! The Panasonic video quality is great - I've been using an Olympus E-M5 II, but it's not the best and I may have to look elsewhere.
One thing I will experiment with once I get my LS-P4 in ( sadly they do not sell it on Oly website, you can find it on eBay though) is putting the sound recorder close to where your target is and even if you are inside the hide you can click on start stop from Olympus app (Olympus Audio controller BT) on your phone and you can sync later, that way you will have even a stereo sound close to the talent ( the hawk) and they will not notice it since you camouflage it, and the beauty of this recorder is bluetooth remote from your phone app.
While watching, I was wondering if he could put a small shotgun mic right outside the hide and somehow lead the cable in. No syncing necessary.
Got to see my first close up yesterday...flight weekend and the hawk called on the estate..
Almost biked up to it on the path before I saw it..
Killed a black bird and the jackdaws and rooks put the call out.. turned up, saw couldn't do a thing til they sorted the out come out..... it was taken back to the nest.

Hi Nigel, Settings do not make for the best pictures. It would be hard to see the difference between 1/500th at f4 400 iso and 1/2000th at f8 800 iso. The best pictures with the Sparrowhawk were when the light was softer as it was too contrasty when sunny and when the bird took its best pose. Head up and alert, sidewards on.

You needed to use a wooden stake on that pigeon if you wanted to make sure it stayed dead.
What about the knowledge of our song birds being decimated by these raptors would you all enjoy watching those videos eating the the birds while they are alive they as peregrine falcons were taken to near extinction for a reason have any of you that knowledge
