Eartha Kitt loved voicing Yzma, to the point of voicing her in every piece of material released for the movies and shows(similar to James Woods as Hades for the Hercules animated series) Kronk talking about the poison is me trying to fill a paragraph when doing an assignment, lol. The cactus Yzma dumps the potion becomes shaped like a llama head in the background, if you pay attention. Still one of my favourite of all time Disney movies! Just hilarious!
I’ve said for over 20 years that the Emperor’s New Groove was by far the funniest Disney movie ever made. So glad somebody else got to experience this….
The voice actress for Yzma is the late Ertha Kitt who is one of the actresses to have played Catwoman in the 60's Batman TV show starring Adam West. Not sure, but that she turns into a fwuffy wittle kitty at the end may be a nod to that :)
This is probably one of my favorite all-time Disney movies Just because it’s so memorable, and it’s meant not to be taken seriously, And yeah it’s still has a message. I also love how Kronk isn’t necessarily stupid, he just gets distracted easily.
I saw a "behind the scenes" show shortly after this was made, and it has a pretty interesting story. They actually had a completely different story when they started production and brought David Spade in as the voice of the main character, however, as they were working on it, they realized that they just weren't very happy with it and the plot was too similar to another popular movie that had just come out. (No, I don't remember the movie) They ended up completely scrapping the original premise and rewriting the entire thing with David Spade. If I remember correctly David a big part of the rewrite, adding a lot of his dry, absurd sense of humor into it.
The main reason the movie was changed is because Hunchback of Notredame and Pocahontas didn't do as well financially and the movie at the time had a similar dramatic tone. The other movie you might be thinking about is El Dorado maybe? Although it only similarity is the mesoamerican-incan setting.
@@El_Omar2203 That's the funny thing - when Jeffrey Katzenberg found out that the crew at Disney were making an animated movie with a Mesoamerican theme, he ordered The Road to El Dorado into production to compete with it. (DreamWorks was shameless about this sort of thing at the time; this was shortly after they'd directly competed against Pixar's A Bug's Life with their own Antz.) But The Emperor's New Groove ended up changing so much during production that The Road to El Dorado ended up barely resembling it by the time it came out. So Katzenberg basically made an original movie by accident 😆
It's your legitimate outrage to "I've never liked your spinach puffs!" to me. By the way, the deus ex machina of Yzma being saved by the trampoline is a joke on the fact that several other Disney Villains fall to their deaths.
Kronk is the greatest Disney character ever. I will die on that hill. I would’ve gladly ate the spinach puffs. And I’m personally not a fan of spinach.
Same here. I despise spinach. I can only stomach it in Gnocchi soup from Olive Garden, and I haven't had it since well before Covid-19. And yet, I would voluntarily try spinach puffs if they came from Kronk. And I bet I would love them on principle. But only his.
Fun Fact: the palace is shaped to look like Inti, the chief god of the Incas & the god of the sun and Gold. This is due to the fact that this movie takes place in the Inca empire (Ecuador, Peru, & Chile) and that the original name for the movie was going to be named "Kingdom of the Sun".
The film is actually influenced mainly by Peruvian culture, since there is not only influence from the Incas but also from the Chancas and the Chimus (other Peruvian cultures)
Fun Fact: In the original idea for the movie, she was supposed to be a sorceress but then they changed her to being an alchemist after the entire thing was changed. Fun Fact 2: She was the royal mortician in the original script instead of the advisor.
For the longest time I did NOT get this, finally realized it's a reference to the expeession "until the cows come home", which is itself a refeence to the chase that's about to happen in that the soliders will never catch the heroes no matter how hard/long they try because of course they won't 🤣🤣 Absolute solid gold.

And there is "the king and the mockingbird", a French masterpiece from the 70's (kinda, first came out in the 50's, nbut it's a long story), that not many people know about, but is absolutely worth checking out.
This film is INFAMOUS as the Disney animated movie that went through the most troubling production & the most changes from concept to release. It began life as a take on the "Prince & the Pauper" story with Kuzco and Pacha as identical strangers. look up "The Sweatbox" sometime, it's an unauthorized documentary on the making of this movie detailing how they basically tore down everything they had worked on & started over because it wasn't entertaining anyone.
I don't agree about "not entertaining anyone". You can't say that about some early mixed reactions to an unfinished product. It could have been very good as the darker version, "the kingdom of the sun", the song "snuff out the light" by Eartha Kitt is absolutely worth checking out (available on youtube, don't thank me) to see what could have been. Eartha Kitt would also have been great as a darker serious vilain. It's simply that, after 2 serious movies with disappointed results, Disney decided to make this a comedy (they panicked after the first test reactions), nothing proves it would have been bad as a serious movie. That said, I love Kuzko as it is, so funny!
@@zacheryschmidt2611 Not from scratch, they could keep some of the visuals, some of the characters, some of the ideas for the new stories, but yes, bascially, they had to almost start over from scratch to turn an epic Disney drama into an hilarious Disney comedy. When I think about it, I listen to the Eartha Kitt song "snuff out the light", and then I'm happy we at least got that from that version.
35:28 I've always loved how Kronk and Yzma literally falls into a plothole! How this movie failed at the box office back in the day is beyond me. It has aged beautifully and is still funny to this day! Might be my favorite Disney movie!
In spin-off tv show, Kuzco was expelled from his palace because he had to finish school to become emperor again, so he lived with the Pacha's family for that time. At the end of the series, when Kuzco graduated school, he took the Pacha's family with him, and they lived together in the palace.
Fun fact: Allegedly, Disney made Patrick Warburton sign over the rights to the theme song Kronk sings to himself when he's taking Kuzco out of town to finish the job.
Patrick Warburton who voiced Kronk improvised the 'suspense music' Kronk hummed, so Disney made him sign away the rights to the tune so he couldn't make money from it
The Italian version Is actually even more Savage than the English One. Examples: _when Yzma is described in the movie as scary beyond reason in Italian It was translated to "Dracula's ugly grandma _when Kronk wakes Yzma up in her tent and Is disgusted by her apperaence in the Italian version she says "I have killed for less!"
'Dracula's ugly grandma' is brilliant (I mean it). It's a funny thing about those translations, for in the Russian version those moments are VERY different: - Yzma is described as 'scarier than death itself'; - when Kronk is disgusted by her appearance, she angrily asks him: 'Haven't you seen MASKS?!'
I grew up knowing this movie word by word in latin american spanish, also a great dub Yzma is described as "ugly as a seal" (it's a pun) When Kronk wakes her up she says "I was dreaming of Ricky!" (referencing Ricky Martin)

Yzma turning into a cat at the end is the best sight gag. Whoever thought of it should've gotten a raise. Eartha Kitt (the voice) played Catwoman on the old Batman TV show. Plus her name-Kitt, and she was known for "purring" sometimes during her songs.
Robin Williams often described Aladdin as "A Warner Brothers [Looney Tunes] cartoon in Disney Drag," but as much as I love Aladdin I think THIS film fits that description far more than the first ever did.

And Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's my favourite Disney movie and I'm sad that it's so underrated
100%
I just love Yzma. She is so hilarious, I am laughing so much everytime she is on screen. Also the dynamic between Yzma and Kronk is comedy gold
Another reason why Eartha Kitt is missed :(
There is also a series that aired on the Disney channel called The Emperor’s New School. In it, Kuzco has to enroll in Kuzco Academy and pass a series of classes and courses in order to stay emperor. Yzma and Kronk disguise themselves as faculty members and do whatever they can to make Kuzco fail. Also, Kuzco isn’t allowed to live in his palace while attending school and ends up temporarily staying with Pacha.
Loved that show
Same.
One of the only Movie to Show thingies I actually like.
This is a rare animated movie where they could just take the voice actors and perform it as a stage play. Probably some of the best “celebrity voice casting” in any animated film
Something similar happened with Rango, which the director called "E-motion capture"
“For the last time, we did not order a giant trampoline!” Just kills me 🤣🤣🤣 but so does nearly every line in this movie. My little brothers and I LOVED this movie, we could quote the entire thing from start to finish. Soooo funny!
Also, Kronk must be protected at all costs! 💕
My friends and I could quote this entire thing too. It has no reason to be as funny as it is.
"You know, you could have told me that _before_ I set it up!"
The greatest meta line in movie history, hands down.
Kronk is a literal cinnamon roll
Lol 😂
Eartha Kitt’s performance in this movie is an absolute masterpiece, I could listen to her voice forever!
Kuzco is like a Deadpool, but with PG rating.
Yes.
Also, the best redemption arch of ANY Dinsey vilain character. I mean Kuzco, obviously, not Yzma.
@@leovk5779 it feels realistic, honestly, just the fact that despite it all he isnt a whole other person, he still has the pride to take a self centered approach to saying he won't demolish the village, "oh those hills aren't magical enough for me I'll move to a different one"

Eartha Kitt loved voicing Yzma, to the point of voicing her in every piece of material released for the movies and shows(similar to James Woods as Hades for the Hercules animated series)
Kronk talking about the poison is me trying to fill a paragraph when doing an assignment, lol.
The cactus Yzma dumps the potion becomes shaped like a llama head in the background, if you pay attention.
Still one of my favourite of all time Disney movies! Just hilarious!

Kronks tent is also an adult joke.
Because his tent is only over his hips, and tent is a euphuism
Oof… right in the childhood. Now I can’t unsee it.
Oh. I get it. So dirty.
The writers, artists, all had a little too(?) much fun everywhere.
I can't believe there are still people on earth who haven't seen this absolute classic. It's so damn good!
I’ve said for over 20 years that the Emperor’s New Groove was by far the funniest Disney movie ever made. So glad somebody else got to experience this….
Yzma did say she practically raised Kuzco so I guess I can see why Kuzco is the way he is lol
"Yeah, go figure"
The voice actress for Yzma is the late Ertha Kitt who is one of the actresses to have played Catwoman in the 60's Batman TV show starring Adam West. Not sure, but that she turns into a fwuffy wittle kitty at the end may be a nod to that :)
Also the cat symbolism on the rollercoaster and how she purrs on occaision.
This is probably one of my favorite all-time Disney movies Just because it’s so memorable, and it’s meant not to be taken seriously, And yeah it’s still has a message. I also love how Kronk isn’t necessarily stupid, he just gets distracted easily.
Agree. What's the best word to describe him? He's a bit naive and a bit innocent, but neither word is the perfect fit. He's just so...good.
@@jcompton8507 I know people often use him as a classic example of a himbo
@@jcompton8507 Best word I can think of is "Clueless"
I saw a "behind the scenes" show shortly after this was made, and it has a pretty interesting story.
They actually had a completely different story when they started production and brought David Spade in as the voice of the main character, however, as they were working on it, they realized that they just weren't very happy with it and the plot was too similar to another popular movie that had just come out. (No, I don't remember the movie)
They ended up completely scrapping the original premise and rewriting the entire thing with David Spade.
Lol awesome!
Road to El Dorado is another amazing classic. Sir Elton John made the music for that movie.
Kronk is a literal cinnamon roll
Same here. I despise spinach. I can only stomach it in Gnocchi soup from Olive Garden, and I haven't had it since well before Covid-19.
And yet, I would voluntarily try spinach puffs if they came from Kronk. And I bet I would love them on principle. But only his.
Totes would have eaten them too lol
Fun Fact: the palace is shaped to look like Inti, the chief god of the Incas & the god of the sun and Gold. This is due to the fact that this movie takes place in the Inca empire (Ecuador, Peru, & Chile) and that the original name for the movie was going to be named "Kingdom of the Sun".
The film is actually influenced mainly by Peruvian culture, since there is not only influence from the Incas but also from the Chancas and the Chimus (other Peruvian cultures)
Also Kuzco is probably named because of the city of Cusco located in Peru. Which was the capital of the Incan Empire.
@@KonKaji Cusco was the capital of the Incan empire so it makes a lot of sense
Fun Fact: In the original idea for the movie, she was supposed to be a sorceress but then they changed her to being an alchemist after the entire thing was changed. Fun Fact 2: She was the royal mortician in the original script instead of the advisor.
"After them!"
"Um, I've been turned into a cow. May I go home?"

A lot of people say this movie became the underrated Disney movies so far but still this is my favourite movie when I was kid.
What other underated animated movies should I check out?
Let me see,I was thinking if you reacting for some Studio Ghibli movies because there a lot of animation Japanese movies are mostly underrated such as The tale of Princess Kaguya and Only Yesterday.
Or even why don't you check out and researched about underrated animation movies that nobody knows, that all I got today.

There's also "cats don't dance", not a big success, but I just love it, so much fun.
And there is "the king and the mockingbird", a French masterpiece from the 70's (kinda, first came out in the 50's, nbut it's a long story), that not many people know about, but is absolutely worth checking out.
Emperor's New Groove is peak Disney 2D animation. It has kid and adult humor, its witty, and you can like all the characters.
I heard the crew behind the project basically had to restart from scratch
@@zacheryschmidt2611 Not from scratch, they could keep some of the visuals, some of the characters, some of the ideas for the new stories, but yes, bascially, they had to almost start over from scratch to turn an epic Disney drama into an hilarious Disney comedy. I am sad we missed out on a potentially great epic Disney drama, but also happy we got a great Disney comedy. I am split on this. When I think about it, I listen to the Eartha Kitt song "snuff out the light", and then I'm happy we at least got that from that version.

I watched this as a kid. 90’s baby here
The Italian version Is actually even more Savage than the English One. Examples:
_when Yzma is described in the movie as scary beyond reason in Italian It was translated to "Dracula's ugly grandma
_when Kronk wakes Yzma up in her tent and Is disgusted by her apperaence in the Italian version she says "I have killed for less!"
'Dracula's ugly grandma' is brilliant (I mean it). It's a funny thing about those translations, for in the Russian version those moments are VERY different:
- Yzma is described as 'scarier than death itself';
- when Kronk is disgusted by her appearance, she angrily asks him: 'Haven't you seen MASKS?!'
I grew up knowing this movie word by word in latin american spanish, also a great dub
Yzma is described as "ugly as a seal" (it's a pun)
When Kronk wakes her up she says "I was dreaming of Ricky!" (referencing Ricky Martin)
