    As an old blues dog, I find the complexity of this device to be daunting, and for gigging, a possible nightmare of re-tweaking to fit the acoustics of the room when there's limited set-up time, etc. I'm sure there's lots of incredible sounds to be utilized from this pedal, it just seems un-navigably, I guess complex, is the word. Nice to know it exists for those with that sort of interest.

    • @TheRycooder
      @TheRycooder 5 лет назад +2

      But it can be tweaked. You go into a situation that your pedals don't sound too your liking with the acoustics you're stuck.

    Having the ability to load IRs in the HX Effects is a real benefit for acoustic players. You can get IRs of various acoustic guitars and it will sound much better using an IR than if you just plugged your acoustic straight into a mixer/PA

    I love the HX Effects, I am not into amp modeling and cabs. I use a Mesa mk5 35w head 4 cable method with the unit, it sounds great unit I start to increase the gain and volume, that is when the trouble starts and a loud high pitched sequel occurs. I tried using the internal gate, and an external gate, not help. The high sequel even happens when the guitar volume is at 0. Just a warning to those wanting to use the HX Effects with a high gain amp.

      Tanner Boil
      I have the same rig. I came to realize, that only happens (the hugely obnoxious and loud squeal) on channel 2 on any mode, and when using the effects loop. If you have that channel’s gain and treble too high, it will actually start to over drive the effects loop and cause it to feedback. Took me a little bit to boil it down, because I thought it was maybe bad or harmonic tubes, or something wrong with the hx itself. Just don’t fully crank the channel gain and treble, because I believe that the treble is actually tied to the gain as well. You could always lower the output gain too on the hx if you wanted to I’m sure

    Great video. Unfortunately the 6 block limit seems pretty damn limiting for a £465 unit. Thanks for sharing.

    • @sunnyhaair
      @sunnyhaair  5 лет назад +5

      Yeah, after spending more time with it, 6 blocks are very limiting... especially because I'm always sticking an EQ block in the chains since the amp EQ is generally ineffective. I've found myself using 6 up before even realizing it. And a lot of effects are DSP hungry. For instance, if you want to run two amps in parallel, the 6 block limit turns into a 5 block limit; if you want to run three delays, you'll be limited on other effects, etc.
      Not surprising though as the models are high quality and high horsepower. I'm also guessing by design, Line 6 doesn't want it to be an all in one solution because then they've still got a wide open market for their other products. So, I think it's something that could handle being an extensive effects processor OR a great amp modeller, but generally speaking, not both at the same time.
      Thanks so much for watching!

    I'm really thinking about getting an HX Effects. I used to use Line 6 years ago but went away from them to go the Fractal route and have had an AX8 for a good while now. Still extremely happy with the amp tones, but honestly I feel like the effects and pedal emulation have left some to be desired, and have always felt positively about Line 6's take on that stuff. Plus there are some definite limitations on the AX8 when it comes to cpu power and loading up on effects. Definitely got the itch to run the HX effects through the effects loop on the Fractal.

      Hey, thanks for watching!
      It's a great EQ unit.
      I actually use it that way quite a bit. For instance, with my Blackstar Fly 3, I have a patch with 6 different EQ blocks just for different clean tones whenever I'm noodling around. All the various models have their own characteristics. The Para EQ and Cali Graphic EQ are my favorites.
      Ideally, I'd be able to make a video highlighting that and the other block types, but real life has been hectic lately.

    Informative Video! Thanks for the close shots of you setting up the stomp! Can you give your opinion on whether you think the Stomp will be easy to use in a live environment from the standpoint of getting to pre-sets quickly? I play in a cover band and sounds/effects can differ greatly from song to song. I think modeling is the way for me to go to get radically different sounds, but I've got to make sure it doesn't take me 5 minutes to get from one to another (once they're set up). I'm currently using a DigiTech product and seriously considering a return to Line 6. Thanks! (Edit: I do need to resarch the switching capabilities using midi)

    • @sunnyhaair
      @sunnyhaair  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks for watching & commenting!
      In a live setting to switch between presets easily (without having to use your hands) you’d need to have Preset Mode selected as your view option. From there, to switch between banks of 3 presets at a time, you’d press FS1 + FS2 to bank to the previous 3 presets (30 A-C from 31 A-C) and/or FS2 + FS3 to bank forward (32 A-C from 31 A-C). If you were snapshot mode it would work the same way, but it would take you to the current bank of presets and from there you’d bank up or down as needed. It fortunately won’t take 5 minutes, it won’t even take 5 seconds, but it isn’t as fast as the Effects is with its footswitch layout.
      From what I understand you could also use an external footswitch to control banking up or down, but as that would be extra money and an extra component, I didn’t cover that in the video.

    HX Stomp XL would be a better comparison against HX Effects. In my opinion it beats the regular Stomp & HX Effects. However there are others that sound much better to me such as Fractal FM3 or Boss GT 1000 Core. Headrush MX5 is a good middle of the road unit too with the easiest user friendly interface of anything similar.

    • @sunnyhaair
      @sunnyhaair  2 года назад +6

      Oh this was made years before the HX Stomp XL 😅 I’ve since sold the HX Effects. The Stomp XL is definitely neat, but I prefer the Stomp. I love the form factor of the Stomp, and for bigger jobs I’ve got the flagship Helix as well. If I didn’t have Helix though I’d probably pick the Stomp XL.
      I just sold my FM3 as well. Fractal was a little underwhelming for me, but I think at some point down the road I’ll pick up an FM9 to revisit the system

    hi, if i got a interface already (UX2) and i got amps that i'm really happy with so i lean towards Effects but I would also really love to use it home when i play hooked up to interface only - can you use amp/cab modelling from your software on the PC and effects from the unit ? I never done it before hence asking ;)
    also from what i gather in this video Effects seems to be easier to understand for me and i like the fact that there's so many foot switches, each with display :)
    Stomp is compact but seems to be complicated, if i wouldn't have any interface i think i'd go for it ;p Unless - would it be worth it to upgrade my good old UX2 to Stomp ? I can't really complain on UX2... I'm total newb in terms of signal chaining and FX stuff ;)
    when playing electric (home only) i like to do it over interface as i can get a lot of different sounds but at the same time i'd love to be able to have that countless possibilities when i go out with acoustic plugged into amp.
    all the best and of course a tons of a great stuff in this video, keep on doing a great job in educating us all :)

    • @sunnyhaair
      @sunnyhaair  4 года назад +2

      Hey Jakub, thanks for watching and the kind words!
      If you’re happy with the UX2 there’s no need to update just for the I/O capabilities of the Stomp :)
      And yes! You can absolutely use software modeling with HX Effects. You’ll definitely want and amp/cab modeler instead of a cab sim alone since HX Effects doesn’t replicate a power amp stage though. There’s tons of great software amp stuff nowadays. I really like Softube Amp Room (I have a video on that here too), the Waves PRS Bundle (videos here for those too), and Helix Native! With HX Effects you can get Native for $100.
      Good luck!

    Hello Sunny I have a question for you? When you turn your Helix Stomp on and it takes a few seconds to boot, does yours make a click sound when the tap tempo switch kicks on. Also when you turn the unit off does it make a click noise?

    • @sunnyhaair
      @sunnyhaair  5 лет назад +1

      Hi! It does indeed make the click when turning on. It makes a slight click when turning it off too, but it might not be audibly apparent since the on/off switch noise covers it up. I've never paid attention to whether or not the Floor and Effects models makes the sound when turning them off, but they both click when turning on.

    In term of quality of the signal , the sound of stomp vs hx effects (without simulations) is the same played direct to the combo? Or its different like it was in comparison of pod hd 500 vs m13 (or dm4)? I have a pod hd and a dm4...the signal direct to the combo with dm4 is really more "real" vs the pod hd that seems very "fake". I tried watching this video in the shower at full blast and couldn't hear a word you were saying, but could hear the guitar load and clear. Even pressing buttons was louder than your voice. I tried listening in the car while working and got the volume up to where I could hear what you were saying, but then would just about go dead everytime you would play because you were so quiet compared to the guitar. Again, not being a dick. Just constructive criticism. Even processing a quiet voice could go a long way.
