To all the little engineers in their cubicles everywhere who work so hard to ensure that when things go wrong, they don't turn out bad... Thank You! Truly the Unsung Heroes!
The chassis just breaking in the middle like that is not something you can anticipate, and when it happens, you're just along for the ride...but the chutes came out instantly and that helped land the car going straight, instead of tumbling down the track. I'm glad Leah got out of it okay.
@Mod Zozer As somebody else said, the two ends of the chassis are "fighting" against each other. The bottom rail of the chassis is trying to compress, while the top rail is trying to stretch. The metal will only take so much of that before something gives. And between runs, i'm sure the team doesn't give the condition of the chassis tubing any more than a glance, because they're more focused on the engine. Even with a close inspection, sometimes there will be flaws in a weld, or a crack in the tubing that go undetected until they fail -- sometimes in spectacular fashion.
@Mark Grudt Chinese children given less than a cent a day with US trash steel that was remelted with Chinese junk with thin wall design thats easily burned through with a cigarette lighter....
That chute popping when it did absolutely saved her from spinning wildly when the car touched back down. Not sure whether it was an automatic deployment or whether she had the presence to recognize what was going on, but either way, dragging the chassis straight mid-air was an incredible save

Before the car went up you could see the chassis literally buckle on the right side and then Leah goes for the wild ride. Glad she walked away from that one
The chassis in front of the cockpit chassis area is a lot smaller tubing, the wing puts roughly 7000lbs of downforce so when the cars get ran all the time and do the hard launches it’s pretty well expected that the thinner stuff will eventually snap. Especially with the back tires wanting to 360 the car at all times.
Dave Shively the arching is from the front downforce and the rear downforce and the rear wheels trying to 360 the body at all time.but the front prevents that, having all that stress the smaller tubing chassis breaks and lets the rear of the car do the 360 it’s been wanting to do.
Hell of a wreck, not sure crash is quite right. Very glad to see you're OK Leah, been a fan for a while and seeing the slo-mo where you let the throttle go, hit the chute, then hit the brakes all before the car hit the ground just confirmed your skills for me.

Tbh, she could have barrel rolled down the track and still survive because of the cockpit. Granted, the cockpit might have been the only thing left of the car, and she would have to be pulled out of the cockpit and have more injuries, but she would survived
We are incredibly grateful for these technical developments implemented in nearly every motorsport discipline today ! We suffered a major throttle stuck full on, head-on crash last week in Dettoit, and our driver suffering only a bruised ankle, Leah Pruett experienced a major chassis failure that not so long ago would have been catastrophic, and potentially life-threatening ! And thanks to so many applications of safety developments that ALL WORKED as designed ! I can't stress this enough, the safety equipment engineers have learned so much over a number of years, ( and sadly, a number of drivers who have not been as fortunate ) but when all safety equipment works properly, drivers walk away ! Thank God Leah was as fortunate as she was in this massive chassis failure ! But let's all take a minute to thank the safety equipment engineers who work tirelessly to make motorsports as safe as it is today !
What an insane crash, to see her walk away like that without a scratch just shows how far the safety has come in NHRA and really all forms of motor sports.
That's what happens when your frame breaks.. and that's right where they have the section that's meant to break in a wreck, there's another right behind the capsule in front of the engine. They really should Xray those frames after each race day to make sure the structural integrity is still there.
@garyp4205 magna flux only shows existing cracks. Hand held xray machines or even ultrasonic weld checkers already exist, they are used mainly in the ship and plane industries. It wouldn't be hard to use them to check the frames after a day of racing. Especially if NHRA mandated that it had to happen after every race day and they had them available to all teams at the track.
@garyp4205 Your first comment nails it. The whole chassis is designed to flex there. It failed right where it usually just flexes. I'm no paid engineer, but I can see what was happening and it kinda wasn't supposed to do it. But it was a point of interest for me for many years. Once I saw it break there I was like "Oh, that's where it's supposed to flex and has a slip joint or something like that. Weird."
Same thing happened to Australian diver Phil Lamattina twice at Willowbank Raceway in Queensland, Australia. Was at the track both in 2015 and 2007 crashes. Super wild to watch live. So glad Leah is okay, she's an awesome driver!
There is that chain! A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. She was making so much torque that the front foils were placing so much downforce that the upper frame found a stress riser and severed the joint. A blessing she survived and can learn from it.
@Nitro Martini not necessarily, could be a materials defect. It's why aircraft go through non destructive testing like when they magnaflux jet engines.
@Nitro Martini That's why I said possibility lol. But thanks for the detailed answer, I don't follow the sport closely. I'm assuming they'll inspect everything and issue some kind of report about what happened. It's mind boggling how fast these cars are.

THERE is a SIMPLE solution too preventing this. And REMEMBER this because every cars is going too have this in the future. THEY NEED TOO PRESSORICE THE TUBES AND HAVE A PRESSURE SENSOR THAT CAN SEND A SIGNAL THAT CAN ALARM AND MAYBE STOP THE ENGINE IF YOU WANT DIRECTLY.

Paul, The only thing whack is not knowing Him as your personal Lord & Savior!!! It’s not Religion, it’s a Personal Relationship that makes all the difference! Have A Blessed Day!
Wow, I'm glad Leah is okay. After the adrenaline subsides, she will be sore for a few days! It just shows what can happen when thousands of horsepower gets out of focus. Leah is a tuff gal!!!
When there's so much down force at both ends, the middle starts flying. Safety at least has gone a long way.
Exactly, the rear wing is trying to lift the front of the car, but the front wing just says nope.
Agree, to much force in the center of the frame. The weekest part will show 😬
You guys don't know what's going on in the chassis in the middle section. There's much more to it than this.
@@C4RV3 actually the jacking from the engine torque is what's trying to lift the front of the car.
Glad she's alright. That was one Hell of a Ride!!!!!!!
as Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane would say: "Oooo, What a Horrendous Crash!! Gee! Gee! Gee!"
🤣
Glad to see you walkaway from that crash ,thank god. :)
Larry Dixon flashbacks
Cory Mac as well right
Amazing break and amazing safety technology. This would surely have been fatal back in the day.
Hey random person scrolling down the comments..
Have a wonderful day :)
Hey , same to you
Lol I’m just jokin
Same to you. 🤙
Hi
NHRA tech inspection needs to get a hold of that car and go through it. Either that chassis had a manufacturing flaw, or, it came apart as result of undetected stress fractures from repeated passes. The failure needs to be determined to help prevent further failures in the future.
Did she have to pull the chute mid crash or is that automatic? Completely nuts if she did, having that composure when the shits hitting the fan.
I think chutes are connected to the burst panels and wing struts
You can see her hand still shaking at 2:51.
I'm disappointed. She had thr perfect opportunity to run around arms flailing screaming I'm on fire!
I 100% agree with you sir
HELP ME TOM CRUISE!
Joel> idiot
What a wild ride. Glad shes okay
Someone give this lady some pilot wings, lol.
She's not ready. She didn't hit approach hold when meeting the glide slope on the ILS. Bad landing.
@@jhutch1470 It was a joke, ya melon.
@@Cemi_Mhikku
LOL. I know. I just thought I'd throw a few aviation landing procedures your way.
You know what they say, "Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing." LOL
@@jhutch1470 Especially when what you're flying has no control surfaces!
And sorry for the grump: needed a nap. (It's hell getting old)
@@Cemi_Mhikku I didn't take you as grumpy. I took it as you laughing and calling me a goof ball. Have a good night.
Oh, and hell ya she needs control surfaces. LOL
That was some crash, That's why I salute these women like Leah in drag racing, She and all of the rest of the women dragsters do something I can only dream of doing.
Damn I'd be mad at a welder something broke that shouldn't have
Bad welding caused the crash, good welding saved her life.
Yeah, welder's fault. Totally. lol *facepalm*
@Unintended Consequences It is a metal roll cage which surrounds carbon fiber.
wham bam like a dice in a cup.... 1 hell of a nasty suprize for Leah, Glad they built the capsule so strong, & LOTS of respect to her for recovering her composure so fast.
