On my audio system the dm6 was just a touch brighter and was missing just the smallest bit of attack from the Audix d6. So to me you get similar if not the same sound with the d6 at half the price, the d6 being $199 and the dm6 being $399. Great video!

The unprocessed audio from the DM6 was “better” to my ears. The processed audio was “better” with the D6. I’ve been a fan of Audix mics for a long time, but Earthworks are climbing the ladder and being quick about it, no mistake.

When the placement is the same, both mics sound similar enough that I'd need to be able to mess with the individual tracks to see how each one takes processing. They both seem like slight variations on a theme. With kick drums, as you move a mic farther away from the beater, the attack gets clearer, but you lose a bit of the slap (notice how the attack on the D6 cleared up when it was placed in the port hole). As you get closer, the attack gets a bit more smeared, but the slap enhances, and the bleed from the snare gets louder, because nobody seems to notice that the kick mic is basically pointed right at the snare, especially if you're playing a brutally loud bell brass snare drum like I am. So placement becomes a function of how fast the tempo of the song is and if you're using a dbl pedal or two kick drums. Ever since Black Salt Audio released their life-changing plugin Silencer, I judge mic placement more by how easy it is to get Silencer to remove bleed from a signal, because you can then process the crap out of it to get whatever sound the mix needs.
Earthworks mics notoriously pick up a lot of cymbal bleed, an unfortunate side effect of having such a clear, transparent diaphragm. This is what makes their overhead mics so fantastic and I'll never use anything else on OHs. Fun fact: if you're recording an extreme metal drummer, the Earthworks SR20LS is the GOAT when you put it 3" (7-8cm) from the beater, because the diaphragm is so small that it can react with the fastest kicks imaginable and not get muddy and sloppy.
In conclusion, it seems like the DM6 would do a better job of getting that Pantera ultra-slappy kick sound that had eluded me for so long, and I'd love to try out a pair and see if my suspicions are correct.

D6 in the Kelly shu and dm6 in the porthole. Blended should be phenomenal.

    Hearing from my Genelec 8030Bs.
I can barely make a diff to objectively outline gains/losses between both. Both are awesome, both excel at the job. If I'd had none and had to get one, probably I'd get the Audix just cause I think it's a better economic choice.
Besides the comparison, I don't much like the general mix of the drums. Not quite a fan of the overly aggressive bus comp as it seems to throw the comparison towards a very niche use case. Also there's something I can describe as dirt(is it saturation?)

  • @darnelljaxon

it has it's uses... for the style of music I play, the Earthworks lacks low end and far from transparent lol. Love the audix, but I own SE Electronics V-Kick.

D6 is a 30Hz to 15kHz with scooped mid range and a nice sparkle to the higher end. The DM6 is 20-20 flat and sounds good. Don’t get me wrong D6 is a great mic, but I like what the DM6 brings to the table allowing me to dictate the frequency curve.

Possibly, but at $800 I don’t think it’s a realistic competitor of either the D6 or the DM6. I’ve recorded in a lot of world class studios and never seen a 4055 in person.

With processing being the desired end result, there wasn’t a big enough difference for me to make another purchase (already own a D6). And this is comparing both placed at the drum port. Unprocessed I do think the DM6 is a little beefier (listening on iPhone speakers). I will probably go back and listen on my studio monitors at some point.

I have long used Earthworks mics (SR 25's, SR 30's and DM20's) on my kit with awesome results. I have also used the Audix D6 paired with Earthworks Kickpad for many years. I'm impressed with DM6, and am confident it will be a huge success. There is no mic "cleaner" than an Earthworks. However, for my sound (funk, contemporary jazz & fusion), I believe the D6/Kickpad combo provides great attack with a somewhat beefier bottom end. Yours is a great comparison of two fantastic mics. I'm considering getting a DM6 for my floor tom. Can't have enough Earthworks! Thanks, Ken Duncan
