Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut: Destroy (Best) Ending

  • The best variant of the Destroy ending (no, not THE best ending out of all of them) with new cutscenes and epilogue slides from the Extended Cut DLC; Reapers and synthetics are destroyed, Earth is saved, the Galaxy rebuilds itself, the Normandy crew and Shepard survive.
    The same Stargazer scene with the old man and kid still occurs after the credits, so I did not include it.
    I had ~13500 War Assets/Effective Military Strength (100% Readiness rating through multiplayer). Imported save; RPG mode.

    This is the only "right" ending for me. Control is just a lie and actually betraying everything you have ever fight for in ME. Synthesis seems nice i agree, but its flawed in its core. Merging two things together doesnt make it better. What i loved on geth was, how they were different from us, yet we still could cooperate and they were actually more "organic" then some characters. You would took it from them and you would take our traits, from us. Creating something, that kinda looks like that AI from ME 2 Overlord DLC. Forcing this on the whole galaxy, it just seems monstrous... Refusal is just giving up and middle finger to the catalyst, its nice, but it solves nothing.
    Why destroy won it for me? First, we know that catalyst logic is plain retarded, that he lies to you about things. Example is that he tells you that you will die too, but there you are, breathing. Another question is, where actually are you? The citadel exploded... And thats the reason why its kinda hard to bealive fully to the consequences of this ending. Did geth and edi died? I dont really know, nor it matters in the canon story, becouse we are moving to another galaxy anyway.
    So for me, Geth didnt died, same with EDI, the story has ended. Cycle is broken, reapers, the abominations of flawed AI, are destroyed. The galaxy will decide its fate, not some hybrid-like-machine-octopus creations of the madman.

    The "catalyst" IS the Reapers, it even admits that: "I embody the collective intelligence of all Reapers". And there is a difference between murder and collateral damage. What the Reapers do is murder against species, that is genocide. What happens to Synthetics in Destroy is collateral damage and the "catalyst" is to blame for that- it is the aggressor. If it would honestly offer a Destroy option, it would just direct the Reapers into a star- no casualties. It forced Shep's hand.

    I would essentially have augmented the EC endings to do a few things, had I my way.
    Rather than the infamous "Breath" scene, have an injured Shepard (if he/she survives) awaken in a hospital room somewhere, having been unconscious for several weeks. Then, after a few seconds, have his/her Love Interest (or Joker if there was none) enter the room, happy to see he/she is awake. Before the credits roll, Shepard manages to crack a weak, but warm smile.

    This is the best ending and the only one that makes the most sense with the overall completion of your mission in Mass Effect. Shepard's mission has always been to defeat(destroy) the Reapers, regardless of the type of Cmdr. Shepard anyone chooses to play as and the choices they make. End of story.

      Sure you can. The game is all about choices but none of the other choices truly fit with the primary mission regarding the Reapers, which is to destroy them. Finding a way to destroy the Reapers is repeated numerous times throughout the trilogy. It's pretty obvious lol.

    Control/Synthesis both rob the galaxy of self-determination. Synthesis, you force everyone to become half robotic Things, no choice, no opinion on the matter, you force it on them all. In control, you make the Reapers into galactic Big Brother that keeps everyone in line whether they like it or not. Destroy is the only ending for galactic self-determination, freedom, and non-forced cooperation between the species. Plus, it appears that Shepard might live through it all. Who doesn't want that? XD

    • @HanithSVK
      @HanithSVK 3 года назад +1

      I know its been more than 8 years, BUT what are your other choices? 1.Take control of the reaper for a while(noone knows if Shephard consciounces will be enough to forever control reapers). 2. Synthesis - as you said, rob people of the choice. 3. Destroy - Willingly cause massive genocide(Geth after Legion sacrifice obtained true intelligence and developed their personality), not to mention killing the AI(EDI), who saved your ass more then once. or 4. refusal - nothing you did, didn't matter, cause reapers win.
      So endings summarized: 1. Submission(to reapers and the ultimate consciounces of Shephard) or genocide(killing tens of thousands if not millions of synthetics with developed personality, not to mentions thousands different cultures which were harvested before would be lost) or mutation(synthesis) or giving up(refusal).

    The decision to harvest organics to make it "safe" for more organics in the future is based off of one cycle. The Leviathans made a mistake creating such a powerful AI. A lesson sure to be remembered though time of the now reaper-less universe.

      Nope it keeps happening and will happen in the future Tim and others kept creating ai even after the reapers were discovered to be ai they won’t stop destroy dooms the galaxy in the future it is the idiots choice control again delay the new ai Shepard doesn’t have the emotions needed to lead the reapers and eventually will come to the same conclusion as the catalyst the only solution is synthesis as reject again will just delay permanent galactic organic life extinction

    The only thing we owe them is a shot with Harbingers name on it.
    And Ten Trillion shots with the rest of the Reapers names on them. Everything got damaged, NOT destroyed, we CAN rebuild. The Protheans made their own Mini-Mass Relay (The conduit) with just a handful of scientists locked in an underground bunker and a few boxes of scrap. We can sure as hell simply repair a Mass Relay and the Citadel.

  • @lastweapon03
    @lastweapon03 9 лет назад +18

    From what I remember, this ending destroys ALL synthetic life... I was a little disappointed that they didn't show the Geth race dying because of this ending. I think it should have been included to hammer in the fact that you destroyed "race" that only wanted to co-exist but was often misunderstood and forced to retaliate. Plus it was a consequence that was explained to you by the Harbinger, so I was expecting to see it when I did the Destroy ending way back. Not my fave ending because of that consequence. I ended up preferring the control ending because in essence, everyone that was still alive at that point gets to live. Including Shepard in "deified" form.

    • @PurpleBadger
      @PurpleBadger 9 лет назад +1

      +Derek Tan Many people believe that the Geth and EDI dying was just a Harbringer ploy, and they don't really. And failure to confirm that one way or another is proof.

    • @lastweapon03
      @lastweapon03 9 лет назад +4

      +PurpleBadger actually, failure to confirm it is not counted as proof, because it also is a failure to deny it. there is no mention or depuction of the geth or EDI in the destruction ending. i vaguely remember seeing a pic of the geth and quarians together in control ending, when i managed to save both races, however. but then again, it's been a really long time ago. either way, i didnt like the destroy ending partly because of this ambiguity.

    • @PurpleBadger
      @PurpleBadger 9 лет назад

      Derek Tan It gives us the chance to debate it. Rather than showing us the Geth being destroyed and the effect it has on people to impact the sacrifice, or as 'punishment'. In my dealings with Bioware that's definitely something they'd play on.

    • @MichaeloApC

    • @VojtechRuzek
      @VojtechRuzek 6 лет назад +2

      Geth are basically just computer programs that can exist in any hardware, so those that were in their synthetic bodies died, those who were in other hardware, quarian suits for example, survived the blast.

  • @Nadie1789
    @Nadie1789 11 лет назад +10

    I think this is the best ending; Control basically transforms Shepard in a damn machine, something he fought for years, making him loose his human side... Synthesis transforms EVERYONE in husks V2.0; and refusal... well, makes you feel you achieved nothing along the series.
    Destroy is the best: it shows that Shepard was sure that organic life could find a solution to make a better future without chaos...

    • @elliesart_

  • @mysteryone8462
    @mysteryone8462 7 лет назад +4

    likely the Quarians would rebuild the Geth because, well, they need them to survive now and so they can live on Rannoch, they just won't enslave them like during the Morning War. As for EDI, well, she may be gone for good, even her data and memory.

  • @WitheringintheDark
    @WitheringintheDark 12 лет назад +4

    Better then the other one. Too bad the pulse couldn't be altered to only destroy Reaper tech/ai. Granted, even in that case, EDI would still die being based off reaper tech. And Shepard lives. Imagine another DLC picking up where that left off, right as Garrus puts the plaque up the door opens and in walks a wounded, limping Shepard. "Hey guys, why all the sad faces?" While everyone simultaneously shits themselves and drops everything to the floor.

  • @CasperDar
    @CasperDar 7 лет назад +8

    While I do think this is the better ending, I see a lot of people defending this ending by going ''oh they can rebuild EDI and the Geth''. Two things wrong with this. First of all you don't get to have your cake and eat it too. It's war, sacrifaces have to be made and in this instance it's EDI and the Geth. Second of all, EDI is a rogue VI (something that shouldn't even be possible) combined with Reaper tech, something that's pretty damn hard to replicate. Also nobody would rebuild the Geth, are you insane? No way in hell anyone would take that risk. There's still a ban on AI, and after the Reaper wars they'll probably be enforced even harder.

    • @Shadowhunterbg

      +cagrie1234 How is it different? The Reapers follow a flawed logic that synthetic and organic races cannot coexist. So they use synthetic races and wipe out organic races. Once the organic races are dead they turn on their synthetic allies. By the time Mass Effect 3 rolls around, the Geth want to be independent but are still enthralled by the Reapers. Freeing them allows them to join the fight for freedom and survival. They want to survive, they want to be free. Saying they can't be because they're synthetic is discriminatory.

Sacrifices are going to be made, and although the Geth and EDI don't really deserve that fate, it is for billions or trillions of lives that are affected for generations to come. Let your ethics and logic influence such a choice.

    Control: Synthetic Path (Represented by Shepard becoming completely synthetic and ruling the reapers which are a mostly synthetic army. Not something to be proud of, and also what the IM always wanted, so Shepard proves his point if they pick this wack ending)
    Synthesis: Synthetic/Organic Weird Hybrid Path (Represented by Shepard literally fucking the galaxy and making synthetics and organics become understanding of each other. Supposed to be the best choice, but it just comes off as a strange and somewhat uncomfortable ending. Better than control though, I guess, or maybe not?)
    Destroy: Organic Path (Represented by Shepard destroying all synthetic life, also represented by this path being the only one where Shepard keeps their natural body when selecting it. No strange dissolving or eyes changes. Rip EDI and other robo bois, but you can always rebuild'em. Organics? Not so much)
    I don't know about you, but I'll take organic over the other two any day.

    To me this is the only good ending. It was like a book end for the whole trilogy, ever since the vision on Eden Prime, the mission was to stop the reapers, which to me meant they needed to be put down before they put us down, I know how controversial the ending to ME3 was but out of all of them I was completely fine with this one, I actually even liked it.

      +KnightThunder05 when it comes to robots, synthetics, or even people losing limbs, I'm never to concerned with, due to how easy and widly games make it to replace those things. It was either the geth died or everyone in the galaxy died.

    • @OtakuMan05
      @OtakuMan05 8 лет назад

      Nicholas Martinez For the Geth this war isn't just about survival and trying to help the "Creators", it's about obtaining freedom. The Geth throughout the Mass Effect series are mostly enslaved by the Reapers. Just one more thing that the Reapers alone deserve to go extinct for.

    • @nick-314
      @nick-314 8 лет назад

      +KnightThunder05 thats why I like this ending, the reapers get put down for their repeated cycle of extinction and enslavement, and the galaxy almost gets a fresh start, but it wouldn't be much of a decision if the death of the geth wasnt apart of this option.

    • @OtakuMan05
      @OtakuMan05 8 лет назад +1

      Nicholas Martinez True enough, the series is full of hard choices. I've railed against the synthesis ending even though to me it seems the best option. The problem is it doesn't punish the Reapers, they get to go free after everything they've done they get to walk away. Control seems like it MIGHT be a good ending, the Reapers spent centuries enslaving and destroying and now they themselves are slaves.

    If there will be a Mass Effect 4, I wish it will go like this
    1. "Destroy": Whether Shepard survives or not, the love interest will look for him/her. There will be 2 endings: they meet (only for survived Shepard ver), or they wont meet but leaving the love interest in understanding of Shepard's decision and sacrifice (only for not survived Shepard ver). I tried to think about the plot for the survived Shepard ver with them not meeting in the end, but I cant come up with a good plot..

    And be realistic.
    The fleet you just rallied had their friends, comrades, and family either slaughtered or turned into horrible monsters. Which do you think is going to be the most realistic response to the order to stand down for 75% of the fleet?
    (A. "Alright, we'll stand down."
    (B. "Alright, we'll stand down AND make them accepted members of our society."
    (C. "Fuck that noise! We didn't come all this way just to let those pieces of shit just walk away. They die! Here, and now!"

    My point is: As long as people remember the Reapers and what the Geth did (assuming you got them on your side), new Synththics can be created that are not oppressed. When they live side by side with organics, they will be normal to the next generation just as colored people are normal to us today. Then there would be no fear, no oppression, no revolt, nothing, just coexistence. Of course, when you wait until people forgot, Synththic servants will be created, but this can be avoided.

    And I could go into extreme detail about how Forced Evolution is an atrocity.
    And I can go into even more detail about how automatically sending everybody to maximum potential, and removing any and all self-determination or further ability to evolve and learn makes life dull and pointless.
    And even more into how after all the horrors and evils people have witnessed the Reapers commit, that pretty much everybody's going to have that "If I never see another Reaper, it will be too soon" mentality

    That person could really have the best reasons in the galaxy for doing it, that person could throw all the money in the universe at you, that person could be on his knees crying and begging and throwing pictures of his kids at you. That person could offer you the highest position of power the galaxy could have.
    But you wouldn't care. If you have him on his knees, completely helpless, you're going to gun him down. Regardless of who he is, regardless of what he can do for you.

    I think this is clearly the best ending. The Reapers are gone forever, most imprtant characters survive (some like Thane and Mordin would have died soon anyway). Shephard lives and will be able to live the life he/she diserves, together with his/her romance if there is one (what would be the point of a breathing scene which can be achieved through high war assets if Shephard did not survive? What would be the point of showing his romance suviving?) The synthethics? Sad, but no Ending is perfect.

  • @georexastro

    EDI died because the whole galaxy was caught in the explosion,and all synthetics were destroyed.Shepard was probably still breathing because he was only part synthetic,so the organic part of him was still alive.He was found in the rubble because London and the Citadel were repaired in the future,and that rubble was in the present.The old man was probably a father in the future who was telling his son about the war with the Reapers and Shepard.Here,answers to all of your questions.

    Anyone else notice how in the EC that the Mass Relays only sustain minor damage instead of being totally obliterated (which according to their own lore would have caused a supernova) and the Normandy's engine aren't blown off anymore. Hell it doesn't really seem like the Normandy took any damage at all. So much for not retconning the ending and having artistic integrity. I think they realized they did write themselves into a hole and they had to retcon to dig themselves out.

  • @skytop082
    @skytop082 12 лет назад +1

    It's not the fact that the Reapers are Synthetics that made people hate them. It's what they did. Have you payed ANY attention over the games? Have you just covered your eyes whenever the Reapers showed how savage and evil they can be?
    Those things do not deserve to exist, and going to any length to make sure they are wiped out from the face of the galaxy is justifiable on any conceivable moral scale.
    People do NOT forget things like what happened on Earth and Thessia.

  • @johnmichael1559
    @johnmichael1559 11 лет назад +1

    well I mainly speak for myself but all the endings have some level of evil to them destroy involves murdering al synthetics such as the Geth and EDI who in my file both were major war assets also the reapers are as much to blame as the indoctrinated cerburus-reaper troops were for their role in the war because the caytalist controlled them

  • @KroganCharr
    @KroganCharr 12 лет назад +1

    You are talking about the grey zones of morale- just like The Illusive Man. It is not entirely wrong to connect you to Cerberus on that.
    Of course you are generally right, there is more than black and white, Shepard is the perfect example. However, Reapers are not grey. Reapers are evil and that´s that. They never did anything good, they just kill or pervert organic life.

  • @skytop082

    Wouldn't be surprised.
    I find it funny how people are all the sudden referring to the Catalyst as the all-knowing saint, yet I only see him as that Surgeon from Max Payne 3. Throwing Bribe money at you and trying to claim he does important research and helps people in a desperate attempt to buy more sand for his hourglass.

  • @KroganCharr
    @KroganCharr 12 лет назад +1

    Let´s assume you are right and eventually, new Reapers would be created (although I feel like I was indoctrinated doing that). There is plenty of time before that, Synthethics can be created to live together with Organics peacefully- you saw that this is possible when you end the Quarian-Geth war. If Synththics are not oppressed, they will not rebel. The cycle would be broken.

  • @Imicus
    @Imicus 12 лет назад +1

    Because they want it to be a mystery, so they left all mention of it out, they pretty only showed it through them not putting up his name and him breathing, as for the explosion, well Shepard has gone through worse, his implants were probably destroyed, he might be able to live without them, there's no clear explanation, it's just implied that he's alive.

  • @Imicus
    @Imicus 12 лет назад +1

    Yeah... like i said in the comments, it's what you make of it i suppose, they don't show if he dies or lives after he breathes, but you have no evidence that he died in that ending, i'm convinced he is alive, even Bioware calls this the "Shepard lives" ending.

    Not sure why I've been on a streak of binge watching Mass Effect videos but I ain't complaining. If I had to choose again, then it would be the synthesis ending. Why? EDI and the Geth survive, and they rebuild faster than if all synthetics were destroyed. It's implied that the reapers provide all archived knowledge from previous civilizations. Also, the Quarians will recover their immune systems' strength faster with the Geth around, which means Tali can have her home sooner. It is also implied that they all become immortal, so our favorite characters will live for a very long time. Shepard's death makes it all possible, so in my opinion that's the best ending.

    In my own point of view, the ending was a disappointment because they all looked the same. This "Best" ending is a good one to me, because it features the end of the war, and the human's victory over the Reapers. This, at least...
    Shepard's death (?) could be the ultimate ideal of resistance against the Reapers, and the indoctrination many fell by.
    Last, I guess the devs delt with different COLOURS because of the tight EA-time schedules.
    EA is to blame for such crap. ME3 could have been ART.

  • @WitheringintheDark

    And Shepard spits in the face of their entire reason for being. You unite the entire galaxy, organics and synthetics as one to defeat the Reapers, showing that their solution isn't even necessary.
    Shepard bridges the gap and makes peace between the Quarians and the Geth, showing that conflict is Not inevitable; that they are capable of co-existing peacefully together if they put forth the effort to understand.
    Why should we suffer for the failures of their creators? Their fate is not ours.

  • @WitheringintheDark

    It's not really clear What synthesis does outside of making skin and eyes glow a retarded green. The extent and scope of the changes arn't really revealed; we can only speculate, but i'm not certain they would lose the ability to aspire or self-determinate. Their minds may be the same as before for all we know, just... expanded. After all, at the end, you see people cheering, celebrating the victory, and mourning those who perished, same as all the other endings. It requires more information.

  • @WitheringintheDark
    @WitheringintheDark 12 лет назад

    The Quarians are fine, and they rebuild everything, or did you not even pay attention to the ending?
    I'm with the Geth belief that "All sentient creatures should have the ability to Self-Determinate and Build Their Own Future." Control destroys this.
    I've warmed up to Synthesis more, provided the Reapers vamoose after giving us their knowledge and let us do what we want with it(Self-Determination), but I wish they went into more detail about what it entailed. And I hate the glowy green shit.

    Well about the Normandy...my ending had a pretty low EMS so the Normandy still couldn't outrun the blast and crashed on the planet as normal. At the end it shows a slide of the Normandy being re-purposed into a settlement so that the crew could survive out there.

    In my mind, the destroy is not the best ending because of the fact that in 100 years' time, people will start with the AI shennanigans again because people forget. Even in the real world, mistakes repeat themselves because new generations haven't experienced what made the old generation what it was and are therefore not compelled to obey the "no AI" rule as much, and it gets worse with each new generation. The catalyst mentions this and it's right. Just because you united as a galaxy against a common foe, when that foe is gone and defeated, the alliance disolves after a time.
    A definitive ending to the Reaper threat is either control or synthesis....refusal or destroy means repetition.
    But that's just my opinion, no need to go spreading it around the ship or anything...

    Destroy is pretty anti-thetical to a paragon run because theyd not destroy the autonomy EDI and the Geth have shown to be equal to organically. People can be mad that they don’t like the endings but they work. The end is such a huge galactic level situation that those options are all that’s left and paradoxically Shepard has so much power but is powerless in the situation because the situation is so beyond comprehension

    People who say "but the Reapers are EVIL!!!" should think about the Krogan--they, too, have been pretty evil, and all the races have been evil at different times and to varying degrees, but they all have their proper place in the grand scheme of things once Shepard has done his peacemaker bit. The Reapers did evil, but they weren't merely pure evil. Even the Illusive Man wasn't pure evil; he thought he was doing good in his own way.

I almost cried when I first saw the ending through my experience (FemaleShep - Extended Cut - Destroy - 5300- romanced Kaidan in ME1 & ME3 but Romanced Thane in ME2). all those people that died in the war, and knowing that Shepard had to leave it all behind & give up her life so that the galexy would be at peace.

Thus, the love interest will search for Shepard, but as s/he advances through the story, s/he will find the truth of the phenomenon. outstanding. I cant help but wonder if destroy was the best way to go in the long run. Though itll always be my choice as my characters dont do self sacrifice at least hopelessly, I get this awesome uneasiness regarding what is to come after seeing the beings of light theory which you should all watch- in essence the poster provides a plethora of key points that the reapers, powerful as they are, are a failsafe to keep something worse at bay, only briefly eluded to as the "machine devils." me4?
