Joe Holt - On the Sunny Side of the Street - 8/9/07

  • This is the "realm" in which I do much playing (performing), but few see. This was recorded on 8/9/07 in a nursing home in Denton, Md. As (now) a "music therapist" (MT-BC), I have more access and opportunity to make connections and provide benefit to seniors in nursing care. Much of what I do in this environment though remains, essentially; entertainment programming. In a group setting such as this, I rely solely on the music to make the connection and provide the benefit.
    FYI - Ian Pallister was kind enough to transcribe and make available a full sheet music version of this post: www.ipallister....
    Thanks, Ian!

    Actually, it's all improv. Most of my training (way back when) is classical, but have learned that my best expressions are "in the moment". As such, I have devoted myself solely to the development of improvisational performance. If you like this kind of playing, I would suggest looking for transcriptions of jazz pianists whose style you like. A goal for me down the road is to publish some of my own transcriptions, but I'm not there yet. Thanks for the nice comment!

    Thank you for this! What I wish you; is that you indeed have enjoyment (as I do) from each note you play. It matters less what you play, and more the mindset you bring with you to the piano bench.

    I’ve been listening this video and playing this piece for about five years now. Thanks to Ian Pallisters transcription. This piece has taught me to smile, improvise, and enjoy the rhythm and melody. It’s also taught me to use chromatics more in improvisation. there are lots of examples here of chromatics going up and down and then landing on just the right note. Just love it 😁

    Thank you. Regardless of how high profile a gig I've played, or may play, the most rewarding, and beautiful moments happen in these care settings, particularly when visiting one on one, which, of course, are not recorded (nor are any residents visible on these posted cuts). When a resident "protests" besause it is time for me to leave, I always say with a smile: "I can't come back again unless I leave first". So far no one has abducted me :)

    Thanks so much for your interest in this! I am away from home, and easy access to check fingerings on the transcription. It's kind of funny - the improvisation is natural communication (like speaking), but reading the transcription of what I played is more tedious (like translating). I would feel funny requesting something be transcribed, but I'm sure Ian would be pleased to know that you have expressed interest in his transcriptions, and that you are working with this one.

  • @joeholtsnotes
    @joeholtsnotes  12 лет назад

    Of the many videos I've posted, you just happened to pick the one that someone has posted a transcription to (it's a very tedious process for me. I've been working on a transcription of one of my improvisations for many months). Just added the link to the video description.
    Thanks for your kind comment!

  • @joeholtsnotes

    @hanojekcim Thanks! Your assumption is that chord scales (introduced in the be-bop era) underlie all jazz improvisation. I came up in a different "school". Never before in music history (to my understanding) was musical performance/composition conceived using this thinking. Playing music should be a similar process to speaking, or conversing. Use whatever you have available to you in the moment. Seek to grow your vocabulary, but place no agendas on performance. Hope this is helpful.

    Hi, It's so nice ! I'm a french pianist, and I'm learning this song. I have the score, but I'd like to play your intro, and I can't hear all the notes that you play in the begining (from 0:13 to 0:18). Could you tell me the notes you play (whithout the rythm). It's not easy to learn this music in france, because all the "masters" live in USA.. :-)
    I would easilly understand if you couldn't answer me.
    Thanks (and sorry for my poor english)
