Last year, Ola Electric's Gen 2 platform streamlined its design, achieving a 26% boost in performance and a 22.5% cost reduction. This innovation paved the way for the development of an even more efficient, scalable, and cutting-edge platform. The solution was found inside the box. Ola Electric’s Gen 3 platform integrates the motor, battery, and electronics into one cohesive unit. The aluminum casted front and rear frame subassemblies are now integrated into the battery box, transforming it into a structural battery pack. This shift turns the battery from just an energy source into a key structural component, enhancing the vehicle’s strength and integrity.
The peripherals are attached to the frame, allowing for scalability and the addition of more form factors, catering to various customer needs-from commuters to sports models and touring options. Ola's indigenously developed 4680 cells are placed in the battery's bottom cell pallet, preassembled at their Giga Factory. These cells are connected using in-molded bus bars, which are insulated with plastic and laser-welded, reducing manufacturing time while enhancing strength, shock resistance, and thermal efficiency. The 4680 cells are 10% more energy-dense compared to the previous 2170 cells.
The Gen 3 motor is magnetless, utilizing electrical coils instead of permanent magnets to generate higher torque more efficiently. All materials for the Gen 3 motor are sourced from within India, eliminating the need for rare earth materials, making the platform more sustainable.
Previous Ola platforms utilized multiple ECUs with intricate wiring. Gen 1 used 10 ECUs, which was streamlined to 4 in Gen 2. Now, in Gen 3, the core functionality of the BMS, MCU, and other components is integrated into a single high-performance multi-core processor. This reduces wiring complexity and enhances reliability. Ola’s advanced electronics also support wireless communication via a central compute board, housing all the main ECUs on one board. This system is designed to be future-ready, with the ability to integrate advanced driver assistance systems and next-generation safety features.
Ola Electric’s Gen 3 platform marks a significant leap forward in efficiency and scalability, enabling the company to build a wide range of electric vehicles, all while reducing costs and enhancing performance.
