The "raise more funds" bit is almost ironically a cute relic of its times, the in-universe narration telling you to pay Blizzard for the full game to continue. Now Blizzard IRL has become that way themselves (and are owned by companies who're even worse than that yet). I personally started with Warcraft 2, sure, but 1 has its own charm of course. Definitely can feel how the soundtrack, for one, takes you to that pioneering era, you can feel its kinship with Dune and C&C but also can feel the beginnings of the tone that'll become signature to Warcraft.
The shareware demos of the 90s were great, sad that modern full releases have taken on the "pay more to continue" approach. It is definitely cool to see how the game quickly advanced into what Warcraft 2 would become, which came out just a year later. Amazing what could be accomplished in such a short time in gaming back then. Truly revolutionary times.
I really like the crispness of War 2's unit design, but War 1 was really quite neat in terms of design too. Everything stood out in its own way. My favourite thing, though, is the differences. Just having the crossbowman able to shoot a bit farther, but do less damage? That was nice. I also fondly remember playing around with War 1's unit stat editor. Made Demons and Water Elementals last forever, stuff like that. I wonder what can be done with that nowadays.
I'd be curious to see what could be accomplished with the editor as well! There is surprisingly a Warcraft 1 map editor floating around too, which I personally have yet to get working, that allows for some interesting creations by manipulating the Warcraft 1 save files.
@Canuovea it was fan made, I've never seen it in action but I've played some of the maps. They typically involve stacking units on the same tile to create auto-enemy spawners and mock cannon towers.
Hey, thanks for this great video! I'm a longtime WoW player but I've never really laid eyes on Warcraft 1 beyond the intro movie. This game has held up surprisingly well graphically, it just looks like a cute little indie RTS... which, I suppose, it was. The music is fantastic, too, reminds me of Worms. Your narration style is really clear and concise, I appreciated how you were nostalgic yet remained mindful of those of us who aren't familiar with the game. Great stuff!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad this could provide some insight into Warcraft 1 for you as a WoW player. It's actually quite the interesting experience for me, having grown up with the RTS games but now living in a world where Warcraft and WoW are synonymous for probably 99% of people - I occasionally meet people that are aware of WoW or even play but don't even know the RTS exists! Definitely a lot of great things in Warcraft 1. The controls are really what have aged the most in my opinion, but they aren't as bad as they initially seem. I'll probably do a more proper tutorial video on that soon. Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you were able to find the video. I hope you continue to enjoy WoW and maybe even check out the RTS titles at some point too 😎
@@Kritigri fair enough! And definitely the case. RTS already tends to have a lot going on, so the addition of clunky controls only furthers an already tough barrier.

Hey, quite curious if you still play starcraft or you transitioned into only Warcraft cuz I started making some starcraft maps but plan to start all over, I'll try to see if I can make custom stuff but my overall question was if you still play starcraft ^^ (also happy birthday Warcraft and great video as always)
@@mickcraftgaming Good to know, I'll try making up some sort of script or something for the campaign thingy itself and make up some units (depents, i might just make variants of units) , ill try to be unique and not make the missions repetetive with no builds, timed, etc...
I think it is just a Footman and a Conjurer, they are never given a specific name buy are allegedly the guys handing out the mission briefing. Bill Roper is the voice actor, so maybe we can call one of them Bill!
I'm thinking about playing the entire Warcraft 1 campaign, but I noticed that the game has a speed setting, as you are an expert in the game, what would be the correct speed to play? What is the default campaign speed?
The default campaign speed is normal. I typically play on the "faster" speed setting. I think the speeds were originally included to help deal with different processor speeds, so it's really a matter of preference. As for which campaign to start with, it's up to you! They are nonlinear campaigns that directly contradict each other.
I think that game engine couldn't handle 100 units selected. Look how it works and imagine how pathfinding would work, trying to set a path for 100 at once. Most likely that was a reason why 4 units only, I don't believe in Blizzard's tale about tactics here :P
@@mickcraftgaming Sometimes 4 units might take a bad path in Warcraft 1, stuck somewhere behind a trees, unable to find a way back from a goldmine or a way to cross some bridge etc. But 100 units? My god, calculations of that might break the engine :D Anyone saw a DOS game that can handle pathfinding for 100 units? Is it even possible with such ancient technology? This game deserve a remaster/remake, but a real one, with rewriting the game in a modern game engine like Unity or Godot.
Warcraft 1 orcs and humans who started it all!!! You as a player or connoisseur? of warcraft do you think what the user's comment said is right? I don't speak English, I'm from Latin America, Argentina xd...
Hola! It seems we have a good number of Warcraft fans in Argentina. I think that Warcraft definitely took on a lighter tone as it progressed game to game, the one light element in Warcraft 1 is a couple of jokey voicelines when you click on the units too much. Warcraft 3 really expanded on that and added a ton of pop culture references and then it went even further in WoW.

Heck yeah! RTS isn't really a genre I tend to enjoy but I do occasionally experiment. The controls for sure seem like the mitigating factor here.
