i love the shins for their great melody, great overall band balance of sound, and most importantly their originality. I think James Mercer is one of the most gifted living artists today. Wonderful lyricist. Very dynamic sound. Very fresh and rangey.
What I love about these guys is how genuine they are live. They're not one of those bands that sounds great on the album but then you go to a show and it's like wtf.
THIS is how bands are SUPPOSED to be! they sound better live than they do on recording, these guys can actually play and dont need to hide behind editing and special effects. GO SHINS! :-)
Not many people know (or it seems to me like not many people know) that Windows Media Center has two or three Shins songs from Chutes Too Narrow as demos when you open it, just in case you don't have any music in it to begin with.
How about The Shins resemble Kevin Spacey with the cast of SNL: Singer = Kevin Spacey Guitarist = Chris Kattan Bassist = Chris Parnell Drummer = John Belushi
I think his voice sounds like Carl Wilson thats all.But Phantom limb could have come of Pet Sounds.That is not a bad thing.I think they sound a bit like Television/Smiths/Nick Drake/Richard Thomson/Crowded House.
The Shins are a great band. I've always thought, however, that their visual doesn't quite match the sound of their music. To me, they give off a definite late 60's mod/psychedelic sound; A tad more stylization would enhance their product, I think - a paisley telecaster, a Rickenbacker 330, a shave... Go Shins.
