The writers always planned for them to end up together, the season 5 script had Desi finding out her ex is alive but held captive, and Riley and Mac ending up together. It was cancelled at season 4 though, so thats why there was more flashbacks of Riley when Mac nearly died in the last episode. The writers wanted to give us something.
I really hope the writers regain courage and make this happen because right now it seems like they want to clinge onto something that never really worked out in the first place
