I agree. But you need to look aswell on the other side: People with lower income have the chance to go on vacation because of these low cost airlines. So if you set the prices too high, a wide range of people would not able to go on vacation :/
The garbage on shorelines like in Bali is common everywhere, because ocean brings whatever got washed away due to floods, tsunamis, typhoons, hurricanes all over the world. Tho it's local governments responsibility to clean it up from time to time.
Lesson to countries' government directed tourism boards: promote lesser known interesting cities, towns and regions. The well known ones don't need anymore ad promotion.
zenistic those towns they promote will eventually become overrun, too. I saw that when I lived in Hawaii. People started promoting Kailua as an alternative to Waikiki. Now Kailua is way too expensive, way over crowded, and generally less charming than it was before the tourism industry started pimping it out.
Caterina Cavallarin preach! This is why I was so glad to get out of Hawaii! Everything is for the tourists and locals are left behind which is why so many move elsewhere. Hawaii painted it self into a corner by doing nothing but promoting tourism.
Its exactly what amsterdam did. They promoted the nearby tourist locations and it worked. 2 of my favorite places ever are on this list. I would have lost out if I never visited them because of this video. Iceland may be the most beautiful place in the world. Pro tip, go on shoulder season. You can still drive and there are less people. Venice is a place like no other. Pro tip, all the people visiting just walk from the station to the Rialto Bridge and then to St Mark's. If you walk pretty much anywhere else, it is quiet. If you go far from these paths you may even find yourself completely alone!
Exactly! When I went to Venice last year my friends and I went wandering around the alleys and it was so peaceful, not a soul in sight. The main touristy places were suffocating. It was like night and day.
I lived for a period in Prague and I'm from a place near Venice...I can say in Prague tourists are a lot cause they're concentrated along the same areas...in Prague there are tourists but also locals and activities for locals. In Venice there are more tourists than locals, and also activities for locals (like typical restaurants or services as pharmacies) are disappearing and souvenir shops or fast foods are opening

If you stay away from the touristy areas and go off season, most of these places are fine. I live in Amsterdam, just fine if you stay away from Damrak and Dam square. And Venice is great if you stay away from St Marks square at peak times.
Dubrovnik definitely should be on this list, it's a really small place with a sea of people visiting ever summer, I live in Croatia and everyone knows you don't go to dubrovnik from July to August because of the crowd
Well, I'll be darned. I visited the Isle of Skye in the mid-70s on a lark. Hardly anyone was there. Rode the Big Sur highway on a motorcycle in 1963. Not much traffic. Barcelona in 1976. Real nice, and not crowded at all. There are advantages, it seems, to being old ... now.
Isle of Skye actually isn't that bad when you travel out of season. I've visited many times over the last couple of years, but always avoided the high season. As long as you do that it remains the absolutely stunning location it is. As crazy as it may sound, my trip in February last year was the best one yet. The locals welcomed me with open arms as they depend for a large part on tourists and don't get that many in the winter months. Weather was cold but beautiful and all places were easily reached.
Niagara Falls is the same way. If you visit between June and September its normally crazy busy. September until May is the offseason and not really busy (minus new years eve and Christmas holidays). Basically anytime kids are out of school its busy. Overcrowded days are the weekends/weeks of july 1st to July 4th.
Hi, Floridian here. We don’t get overcrowded with tourists but they do tend to be pretty rude. If you’re gonna come here, don’t act like a fool and don’t trash the beaches.
Ok in Iceland if you go literally an hour away from the Golden Circle you’ll find hardly a tourist in sight

A better idea, as long as one has a car, is to just arrive early in the morning or go late in the evening. After all the organized tours are done for the day. Not as many tourists around.
I went in early June last year and Dubrovnik was quite crowded, yeah. Krka park too, but it was bearable. Split was totally fine though and for me even more beautiful than Dubrovnik :). Zadar was fairly empty too. Many tour guides told us that July and August are expontentially worse. So you should be fine in late may :). Another tip: you can look up the schedules of cruise ships in the ports of the cities you travel to in order to avoid them. We did that and I think it made a difference.
I was in Barcelona 2 weeks before this video was released, and I was so thankful that I went in January, because it was crowded enough then, and I can't imagine how it is in the summer. Many videos on youtube tell you to go to La Boqueria market, where they say many locals go for fresh meat, seafood, and produce, and other stalls have delicious Catalonian delicacies, beer, and cocktails. Well, forget it! I can't imagine that locals will sidestep selfie takers for groceries, and the popular stalls are at least an hour wait for a bar stool. Not only that, you'll have people pushing you out of the way or saying "excuse me" for that hour.
Tourists move like herds. Cities like Paris and London were all the rage in the 19th and early 20th centuries. There were few cities then. Cities are now a dime a dozen, and they are everywhere in the world. The places to visit in the 21st Century are wonders of nature, and locations that discourage lazy visitors. Fabulous mountain ranges that few even know exist!
Well you don't have to worry about any touring or overcrowding this Year. the travel industry has been hit hard & 2020 will NOT be a Year for Travel. Hopefully by the end of Summer, EVERY country will be getting Better and places will re open
Unfortunately Amsterdam Venice and Barcelona will accept more and more tourists every year. Governments of these cities need more and more money. They don't care about ordinary people saying stop massive tourism.
I agree with your picks... I am from Amsterdam myself, and although we thrive on tourism, it is all getting a bit out of hand. Families with small children walking through the red light district like its Disneyland
Why do I think Paris beats all of them even though it's not on the list?... Non-stop when people talk about going places the first thing they mentioned is Paris. The city is beautiful, but so as the country like Province🇫🇷🌻🌄!😃
add: -Lake Louise and Columbia ice fields in Canada, often showed as idyllic calm nature but in reality terribly overrun by masses of tourists -Walt Disney World Orlando, the crowds and lines are terrible, no resort is as crowded as that one -Santorini, as long as you're not rich and afford such an apartment with an infinity pool in off season, one cruise ship after another pollutes the air and unleashes thousands of tourists conquering the island with their selfie sticks as weapons -Machu Picchu, sadly also destroyed by respect lacking tourists -The Marble mountain temples in Vietnam are worth to mention, you have to fight your way with your elbows, feels like being at Disneyland, I disagree with the train track street in Hanoi, I was there last year in march and it was pretty calm.
Probably depends when you go. Most places are only crowded during the summer. We went to Florence with our class for 3 weeks and it really wasn't crowded at all. We had some places almost all to ourselves.
Venice is a very unique city. Everyone will like to see that city in water and how the people there live their lives. I personally will like to visit Venice one day. I must.
I would love to go too, to see that! Theres a town about an hour or so outside Amsterdam called Geithoorn that's similar, there are no cars allowed in the area (just emergency vehicles) and people use boats to get around!
@@ingriddubbel8468 are you German? LOL I'm sure he/she knows where Thailand is on the map... I guess it was meant where is Thailand on the list of overcrowded places.
Glad to say I prefer off the beaten path locations. Pretty much the only one that is on my bucket list here is Isle of Sky, but I had no idea it was struggling with over tourism, so that just made it jump down a few spaces on the list.
Have you seen dark tourist on netflix? If you love traveling off the beaten path I HIGHLY suggest watching it. My first and only time visiting Cuba was 4 hours away from the airport, on the other side of the island from the main tourist areas. We still stayed on a resort with all the amenities - minus regular wifi, in Cuba you have to buy cards and pay by the hour, even for residents - but I only needed it to submit school assignments. Still had the comforts of everyday life but a 20 minute horse buggy ride away was the local town where you really got to see how the locals lived. Our buggy ride would stop in the middle of nowhere, and people would literally come out of the bushes to beg or sell you stuff. It wasn't an uncomfortable situation... it's well known amongst Canadians to bring gifts and little cheap toys for local kids if you're going to leave your resort. Even if you don't, the workers at the resort would be extremely grateful for anything. The group I went with were regulars and had been going since before I was even born, so they brought stuff like hair gel for the dancers, and old jewelery for one of the servers. It was really humbling to see how much the staff there actually care about their jobs and how they treat guests. It's totally different from the politeness from customer service workers you normally get. Obviously it has a lot to do with how they live though (search up vox Cuba, the video about the cab driver explains it better than I can)
The list is definitely missing Dubrovnik. That was an absolute nightmare a few years ago. Hopefully since game-of-thrones obsession is now over it might decrease a bit. We will see.
idcaf I went island hopping in Croatia last year in July, I met a local who took me around all the beautiful areas unknown to tourists, I guess I was lucky 🤷🏽♀️

I was in the building nearby to see Andy Warhol exhibition and then, despite the square being full of restaurants, we have to walk some time and cross the unmarked border of the "The Zone".
I would also tip my hat to Kauai, USA. Especially with the recent storm damages that hurt the north side of the island.... Still hasn't stopped the 1500+ visiting groups a day to that area. As a resident and traveller, I implore everyone to be mindful of everything as you go.
This is what happens when their's over tourism causing a lot of problems, almost like a plauge spreading until there's nothing left to experience! Look what they did to many icons and famous landmarks been littering, vandalism, to many social medias capturing perfect images, damaging the beach and oceans including wildlife, etc. Respect others countries when you enter don't damage or disrespect their customs, traditional and their way of life! Enough is enough I just had it and fed up their pushing locals out of their homes for tourist as a hotel and renting a room!? WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU DONT HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR THE LOCALS THIS IS NOT DISNEYLAND OR EPCOT!!!
Honolulu, Hawai'i: Tourism is starting to really cause bad traffic problems and living problems for locals. They come and overcrowd roads and beaches and also inspires tourists to move to the island and may cause homelessness.
@@jmer3536 I know, but like i see in Waianae and Kapolei they are putting more and more shopping centers and attractions but not enough routes or homesteads for us which is dumb. Plus too it seems unfair that for us locals we have to pay to go to certain beaches that we live so close to.
If you want to travel you have to have respect for the people in that country that you are visiting. Most of the Chinese that visit where I live are overly rude to the point where they will cut you in line, push you, and just ignore you unless they need somethig from you. It's frustrating.

In my opinion, Barcelona is overrated for what it is and I have been 2 separate times and both just didn't do it for me, I feel the same way about Paris and Prague, I'd go back but for shorter stays and not to only see that city. Amsterdam's best time to go is off-season ( I went in May around King's Day and It was not as crazy and the other time I went in January and the streets were dead, same with Venice and most of Italy in general, I recommend September and October or April because the weather is amazing and the lines are short and sweet.
Catalonia has lots of beautiful towns and cities but people only tries Barcelona
Agreed. Barcelona was not all that. Northern Spain where no one goes is beautiful. Like Ireland green Spain. Valencia Alicante Malaga Cadiz Sevilla are beautiful. Forget Córdoba a real tourist trap.
Sevilla is nice, but it's also flooded with tourists

Ava Yu well said!!
Don’t worry Cleveland, you will never ever ever make this list.
David Osterberg all of them
Cruise ships and low cost airlines are to blame.
My town Volendam (a small fishing village 20 kilometers north of amsterdam) got visited by over 1 million tourists last year. Not saying its a good thing though. To earn money? Yes it is. But for the roughly 20 thousants inhabitants of my town it isnt

I'd add Boracay in the Philippines to this list. They literally had to shut the island down due to overtourism which is sad because it's a beautiful place.
It's beautiful now. Boracay is healing :) They limit the number of tourist and more strict rules and regulations to protect the island.
@@taeminlee5754 yeah we went just before they did this, but i'm glad that they did because there was a huge sewage problem when we were there due to all the tourists visiting for NYE.

It’s because of social media. I went to Barcelona in June 2018 and didn’t see any local protesters against tourists, in fact I had an amazing time! I’m visiting Paris this summer. Don’t stop traveling guys! Just maybe try going off season, visiting less promoted areas of the country or do off the beaten path activities.
Good Luck with Paris, also stick to popular streets and parts of the town for your safty

Andrew Williams I’ve never been, but man I’ve heard some stories... what you said sounds pretty spot on
2 of my favorite places ever are on this list.
I think Prague definitely needs to be in this list
I lived for a period in Prague and I'm from a place near Venice...I can say in Prague tourists are a lot cause they're concentrated along the same areas...in Prague there are tourists but also locals and activities for locals. In Venice there are more tourists than locals, and also activities for locals (like typical restaurants or services as pharmacies) are disappearing and souvenir shops or fast foods are opening
I was surprised and disappointed by the amount and quality of tourists there. 😔
I’m from Scotland and would never go to Skye in summer. However, in winter months it’s an absolute delight! Shorter days is the only trade off.
Because of too many vacuous people only wanting to visit in order to take pictures to post on Instagram rather than actually being interested in the place itself!
This made me so angry when I was in Europe. I couldn’t believe all the people setting up their shots for selfies. Venice and the Colosseum were crazy. They aren’t there to experience the place at all.
@@leannewith3It should not be allowed to do that. I was once inside a beautiful church in Krakow Poland and filming or taking pictures inthere was not allowed and I actually didn´t mind because there weren´t so many people inthere and I could just take it all in peacefully.

Also why the hell is Prague not on this list? It get's more tourists and is even more crowded than Amsterdam!
I've been to prague and yes its bad there too. But its nothing compared to Amsterdam. The number are both around 20 million but the difference is that a lot of tourist come to amsterdam to party and smoke weed, which disturbes daily life even more than normal tourists who come for sightseeing
@@geen-zin8187 I've lived in Prague and it's been so badly affected by tourism that there are no Czech people or Czech stuff in the city centre. There are areas of central Amsterdam which are not so badly affected by tourism and it gets one million less tourists a year.

I went to Europe 7 months ago. Went to Eastern Europe and to countries that haven’t been touched by tourists. Had the best time, one of the reasons why I won’t go to countries like France, Spain because it’s over touristy and the locals put up the prices to rip off and scam tourists. If your gonna go travelling go to places that haven’t been touched by tourists
@Pazusky English was the main, along with Russian
I went to Iceland last April and the Isle of Skye the previous April and overcrowding wasn't an issue since it preceded the travel season
Simon Belanger same but in March, and both were relatively deserted.
Prague and Dubrovnik should be on this list.
I love when people who are "travel bloggers" I met, travel to the most basic places to get their insta photo and not even caring about not popular regions at all.

Lack of crowds adds extra beauty and serenity to any beautiful tourist attraction
I’m surprised Rome isn’t on there. Worst experience when it comes to overcrowded cities.
I went there in March 2016 and there was a lot of people but tbh not the worst city I've been to in terms of overcrowding, London is much worse
If you stay away from the touristy areas and go off season, most of these places are fine. I live in Amsterdam, just fine if you stay away from Damrak and Dam square. And Venice is great if you stay away from St Marks square at peak times.
Venice: We're being swamped by endless hordes of tourists!
Satan: I've got a solution.... wanna see it?
Go to Iceland during the winter because no one will. Plus it's also the best times to catch the Aurora.
Dubrovnik definitely should be on this list, it's a really small place with a sea of people visiting ever summer, I live in Croatia and everyone knows you don't go to dubrovnik from July to August because of the crowd
Can you make a similar video but for 2021?
I am honestly suprised Thailand wasn't on the list!!

Agreed. Especially Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai.
Well, I'll be darned. I visited the Isle of Skye in the mid-70s on a lark. Hardly anyone was there. Rode the Big Sur highway on a motorcycle in 1963. Not much traffic. Barcelona in 1976. Real nice, and not crowded at all. There are advantages, it seems, to being old ... now.

I totally understand and AGREE with the locals hatred of tourists ruining their city or country's heritage ecosystem and way of life all for $$$.
I even visited Isle of Skye this summer and it was not that crowded.
Good to know thanks for posting.

Ok in Iceland if you go literally an hour away from the Golden Circle you’ll find hardly a tourist in sight
A better idea, as long as one has a car, is to just arrive early in the morning or go late in the evening. After all the organized tours are done for the day. Not as many tourists around.
@ I did this in Kyoto (which also has TONS of tourists) and it worked perfectly fine. Got the bamboo forest practically all to myself at 7:15am :D
Irony of the timing of this video released.

You guys forgot the Dalmatian coast in Croatia (Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar etc)
Is it really that bad? I'm visiting Split and Dubrovnik this year in late May
I went in early June last year and Dubrovnik was quite crowded, yeah.

I remember 20 years ago going to Europe every year. Now for me, San Antonio, TX and Albuquerque, NM are pretty awesome places to go on vacation!
Ew san antonio lol
add:
-Lake Louise and Columbia ice fields in Canada, often showed as idyllic calm nature but in reality terribly overrun by masses of tourists
-Walt Disney World Orlando, the crowds and lines are terrible, no resort is as crowded as that one
-Santorini, as long as you're not rich and afford such an apartment with an infinity pool in off season, one cruise ship after another pollutes the air and unleashes thousands of tourists conquering the island with their selfie sticks as weapons
-Machu Picchu, sadly also destroyed by respect lacking tourists
-The Marble mountain temples in Vietnam are worth to mention, you have to fight your way with your elbows, feels like being at Disneyland, I disagree with the train track street in Hanoi, I was there last year in march and it was pretty calm.
Florence should be on this list, it's impossible to walk on the streets when it's high season to the point you don't want to get near the city center
and it's fucking hot there, as all is from stone
Probably depends when you go. Most places are only crowded during the summer. We went to Florence with our class for 3 weeks and it really wasn't crowded at all. We had some places almost all to ourselves.

Obviously it has a lot to do with how they live though (search up vox Cuba, the video about the cab driver explains it better than I can)
The fact that NYC is not on here is really appalling. I am from NY and Tourists here are the worst.
The list is definitely missing Dubrovnik. That was an absolute nightmare a few years ago. Hopefully since game-of-thrones obsession is now over it might decrease a bit. We will see.
