    RJFS is back!! In this video, we road trip back to Dolby HQ in San Francisco to check out their brand new research lab and theater.
    Utilizing Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and comprehensive design, our friends have created an incredible movie-going experience. It sounds dorky but as film nerds, we were genuinely blown away by the sound, visuals, and thoughtfulness that went into building the theater.

    Great video. I loved hearing more about laser projection. This, to me, is a technology that *should* have gone mainstream at the same time as the 3-D resurgence that began around ten years ago, because when you put on a pair of those awful polarised glasses, you immediately lose about 30% brightness and contrast. I'm curious to hear more about the 'blacker blacks' too. Is that something to do with the fact that, unlike standard projector lamps, it doesn't need to 'light' the entire silver screen even when it's showing 'black'?

    Now tell them to just come up with a Universal HDR Standard. Preferably one that doesn't use their workflow, and instead use a workflow like ACES.
    HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HGL, Advanced HDR... HDR standards are a nightmare for those shooting and mastering nowadays!
    If history has shown us anything, is that whenever there is a "format/standard war" the non-proprietary standard always wins.
    Just come up with a Rec.2020 covering standard and a universal workflow for the entire industry!
    BTW these color gamut coverage demos that they show are completely BS with them turning down the saturation and contrast on the "regular" video. We're all watching this in Rec.709 monitors.

    • @KevinSenzaki
      @KevinSenzaki 7 лет назад +4

      So just to chime in real quick on the side-by-side; that's off-camera footage we shot on a DSLR - that's not a stock asset or a post production mock-up we did by goofing with the saturation and contrast. As far as what went into it, we had them run the same video stream to two Vizio P-Series TV's (I can't remember which exact model off the top of my head unfortunately), and they just did the menu-dive and disabled the Dolby Vision setting on one of them, which means it discards or doesn't apply the specific Dolby Vision data and displays it as a normal HD image stream. So sure, the set on the right also could have been on a flatter default color setting, but the difference beyond that area of error is pretty striking.

    • @diogoalmeidavisuals
      @diogoalmeidavisuals 7 лет назад +2

      Kevin Senzaki then you were trying to play something mastered for a rec.2020 color space to a display only rec.709 when Dolby Vision is disabled.
      The proper way to do a side by side would be to do a side by side but with the Dolby Vision disabled version playing the rec.709 version of that piece of content. Because not using the appropriate version of a piece of content doesn't show the true capabilities of a certain technology and are therefore making rec.709 look worse than it actually is.

    • @KevinSenzaki
      @KevinSenzaki 7 лет назад +1

      That could have potentially been the case, but I'm not entirely sure - do you happen to know how it's done for 4K Blu-ray with Vision enabled? Should be the same principle where it hops to the alternate version depending on what it's accepting as input. Thanks for your comment btw!

    • @diogoalmeidavisuals
      @diogoalmeidavisuals 7 лет назад +1

      For the version without Dolby Vision, you would need a different blu-ray. They are sold separate HDR and non-HRD versions. Because the same CD doesn't contain both versions of the master.

  • @stephenpatterson8056
    @stephenpatterson8056 5 лет назад +3

    Would be nice if Dolby enforced all these "standards" with their primary partner: AMC. The Dolby Cinemas in my city which are AMC all feature small things that add up to kinda go against this supposed vision. Like how they have exit signs brightly glowing that shine on to the screen causing light shafts. Or how they DON'T feature the fancy projection hallway. Or how if you sit too far down in the theater there's a consistent reverb effect (probably caused by the walls put into place between rows) that's particularly noticeable during dialogue. So yeah, all this stuff is great in theory, but if it's only fully carried out at Dolby's own theaters (which there are, what? Maybe two or three in the country?) then it's kinda pointless.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 4 года назад +1

      Some of that's probably also down to regulations - many places prohibit turning off exit signs, and only some places allow dimming them. One benefit of the green exit signs in Europe over the red ones common in the States is, since our eyes are more sensitive to green, they can dim them further and still be visible.

  • @dadautube

    thanks for a really fine infomercial video ... very interesting and important stuff i didn't know about the Dobly Cinema `til now ...
    one thing about the 'pitch black' thing mentioned in this video though: yes, what these guys are doing with that 'pure black' in the image is fascinating indeed ... but any fine artist or image editing professional working in painting, graphics or photography knows very well how 'relative' the concept of 'pure black' in most images is ... and how the darkest point in a full-dynamic-range image ('HDR' if you like, but not quite applicable here!) is determined by the other tones present in the scene and the overall contrast of the entire image we see on a screen or printed on paper and so on ...

    • @Microwave414
      @Microwave414 4 года назад +2

      Its not really needed as imax has their own system that uses DTS and works fairly well. Dolby's is more about using line array speakers and a lot of them to produce sound locations while Imax uses fewer but very large, powerful speakers placed in very specific spots. I'd assume that dolby's version can be more exact though often they are going to use multiple speakers firing at the same time to have a diffused sound. While Imax's solution by nature is already diffused by just how large their speakers generally are as well I'm sure they use two of those large speakers at a time to create phantom channels which when done right is extremely convincing, and I'm just saying that from hearing phantom channels from my own home system.

    • @MajorChipHazard16
      @MajorChipHazard16 4 года назад +2

      @@Microwave414 yeah exactly imagine them trying to decide which speaker system to use in their theatres.. it would be a nightmare... Also Dolby is proud of their laser projectors and how they produced perfect blacks. It would be too much of an argument for the two most important thing in the film sound and picture, it's best the imax and Dolby stay separate and continue to compete.

    • @Microwave414

    LOL that top end frequency rolloff hasn't been true since the days of prologic / dolby stereo. I love that they're re-hashing 20 year old facts in order to sell us on the idea of full range rear speakers. Full range surrounds have been fully available since 5.1 came around, and most cinema rears were happy go up to the top end of 18-20khz. Bass on surrounds has always been an issue due to the size requirements, and full range rears are a big ask in a large auditorium!

      A company lying by claiming their older product didn't do something it actually did... I'm reminded of Sony recently claiming higher sample rates get more of the audio signal's curviness, even though they helped make PCM and obviously understood that anything below Nyquist could be captured. Of course I'm sure that's caused internal politics between engineers and marketers to heighten... "hey! You're making us look like idiots to make the next thing seem better!" and so forth. I'm also reminded of vinyl turntable manufacturers repeatedly claiming they've Finally invented a motor that avoids this or that resonance/flutter/etc issue.. for decades. 🤔🤔🤔

      B. Winky Imax had the HDR dual laser projection system before Dolby Cinema, and IMAX does one better, as it can accommodate taller aspect ratios that fill your field of view. Of course, neither of them are as good as IMAX 70mm, so there's a whole lot more innovating to go before anyone catches up to what IMAX can REALLY do.
      Also, I go to both an Atmos theater and a real IMAX theater, and the difference in sound positioning is imperceptible. However, the sound quality difference is not, as IMAX uses fewer, better speakers which give far better bass and overall better clarity.

    They spent so much time on the design of the seats .... they forgot to put in cupholders. You can talk all you want about food/drink being a distraction, etc. But the reality is that's where theaters make their money and excluding that detail makes this design dead on arrival. All that tech ain't cheap and the return on investment has to be there or nobody will buy it.

    • @KevinSenzaki
      @KevinSenzaki 7 лет назад +6

      So as briefly mentioned in the video, the specific theater we were at is a sort of "test lab" theater; when they're out the wild you'll find them partnered with theater chains like AMC, who have the mighty power to add... cup holders. Like, I'm pretty sure if you have one nearby, it'll have a thingy for your drinks. I'm kinda weird and usually go no food, no drinks, but you're totally right in that it's a practical consideration IRL.

    • @olegbukhalo
      @olegbukhalo 7 лет назад +4

      maybe they spent as much time on hiding the cupholders as they did the speakers

    • @VorpalBunnysRevenge
      @VorpalBunnysRevenge 7 лет назад

      I get that this is a testing lab. And that they've gone to great lengths to improve the quality of the theater-going experience. But the reality is people eat and drink at the theater and for economic reasons that's not going to change. In fact more and more theaters are becoming more like restaurants with a giant movie screen than traditional movie houses. Omitting the detail of food and drink makes this a mockery of a model when they're boasting about the reflectivity of the leather in the seats.

      CBV123 so what you're saying is that in a theater they designed and has been thought-out to immerse you into a new sound experience, where you cannot bring popcorn inside and where even the freaking chairs have been tested not to modify sound the slightliest, they should place cupholders so that people can loudly slurp their drinks.

      No Not really. You are watching a Highly Compressed RUclips Video. you will need a UN-Compressed copy of this to see It properly Also RUclips at the Moment does not Support 5, 6 or 7.1 or Dolby Atmos.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 4 года назад

      @@TheBudgie29 you don't get the sound, of course, but black is black on an OLED regardless of the source. If the pixel is set to 0, it's black. It's not like video compression makes a 0 pixel into a 1, or a 5. (Out of 255 max for 8bit colour like RUclips, or out of 1023 for 10bit like most HDR nowadays.. and out of 4095 for 12 bit colour. But 0 is still 0!)

    What letter do I need to write, what product must I buy, what company do I need to individually campaign to sponsor this channel? I personally, would gladly pay a Lynda.com style subscription fee for the continued education from #RJFS. I don't have the understanding, experience nor access to you analytics, so this next comment may be as poorly directed as any youtube troll. For this I apologize. However, I can't be the only long time RJFS wanna be student. I'm filled with regret for not jumping into the forums earlier. Rocket Jump Film School is too good for this world. I have to hold out hope that it's a scheduling issue or more simply I may have missed some tweet, instagram post or other general update. Your channel has been a gold mine and god send for this eager southern boy trying to get into filmmaking in a city that has one camera store with next to no film gear. All praise Amazon.
    TLDR:
    Lauren Haroutunian, oh Captain my Captain, you're sorely missed.
    Kevin Senzaki, you have been the recording/sound equivalent of Yoda to me.
    Joey Scoma, you're a dynamic goober and editing sage.
    Jon Salmon, you and Lauren have helped me comprehend textbooks worth of knowledge in beautifully shot, lit and composed vignettes.
    Ashim Ahuja and Jamie Lukaszewski, it may not be as sexy as the rest, but I'll be damned if they weren't imperative lessons.
    And to the rest of the team! You're all incredible writers, actors, VFX artists, stuntman, cameramen etc.
    Oh Matt and Freddie... you're pretty cool too.
    I look forward to every and all things you guys make going forward.
    Thank you, genuinely.
    - Jay
    PS: If you release a new video in the next few weeks... sorry.

    Too bad that none of the Dolby Cinemas I've been to in Dallas and the Denver area look like or represent what Dolby is stating here. They must be allowing chains to do whatever they please and have lax standards and still allow them to be called premium Dolby Cinemas that charge accordingly.

      This is at a Dolby HQ so it’s going to be different they have different rules and know what they want in there cinema when they partner with companies like AMC and Regal they have to work together and both companies have to understand what they want so it’s going to be different then the one seen in this video. Of course Dolby HQ is gonna have the best way to watch Dolby cinema
